The Ode on a Grecian Urn squarely confronts the truth that art is not natural, like leaves on a tree, but artificial. The Ode on a Grecian Urn squarely confronts the truth that art is not natural, like leaves on a tree, but artificial as terms of pure, natural, nonrepresentational music prolonged in time. Keats expresses his thoughts and feelings about creation, expression, audience, sensation, thought, beauty, truth, and the fine arts. The Urn is an experiment in thinking about art in terms of pure, artificial, representational visuality extended in space. The second stanza in Keats' "Ode on a Grecian Urn" begins with the statement, "Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter." Keats views art as something that is eternal and lets you experience what's happening in the painting. While he cannot actually hear the music of the young man's pipes, he can just imagine how sweet the melody would sound. If one was to hear music played, it would only please him for the duration of the song, but in looking at a painting of a youth playing pipes one can take pleasure in it every time he looks at the painting. Of course, in Keats' time there were no CDs or cassettes. In the same stanza, Keats speaks of the young man's lover. He tells the youth that although he is so close to his lover but cannot kiss her, he shouldn't be upset because they will always love each other and they will never grow old and ugly. Keats treats these painted characters as real people, as if they were living in their own world confined to the edges of the urn. He perceives art as something that is better than real life. Keats goes on to discuss some trees whose branches, he remarks, can never be bare. They will always exist in Spring - always green, Keats enjoys the fact that nature remains the same, and in this particular painting, in its most beautiful state - Spring. The two lovers will always be in love and will always have passionate symptoms including fever, heavy breathing, and dry mouth. He gives very real, very human qualities to these two painted beings. Then in stanza four, Keats describes a religious sacrifice of a cow. But he goes on to contemplate where all of these religious people came from. "What little town by river or sea shore,s emptied of this folk, this pious morn? And, little town, thy streets for evermore/ Will silent be; and not a soul to tell/Why thou art desolate, can e'er return. He goes far beyond the reaches of the actual painting, and wonders about how the now empty village will forever remain silent and desolate. Keats ends the poem by telling the painting that it will live on to serve as a friend to other generations when his generation is long gone and dead. By using his imagination in interpreting this painting, Keats shows us what he thinks about art. A work of art can mean different things to people, but it remains for many generations to take from it what they will. Keats examines art in some general way abandoning nonrepresentational natural music as his metaphor.

Saturn says that they are "a different kind of company, a different kind of car." General Motors is the company that owns Saturn. Before Saturn, General Motors were barely selling any cars. They were starting to lose their business to the foreign car companies that could offer a compact car for cheaper. The reason that they said they were going into business was to offer a car for cheaper just like the foreign car companies. Their mission, in part, was to market compact vehicles, developed and manufactured in the U.S. that are world leaders in quality, cost, and customer satisfaction. It was also to sell 80% of its cars to drivers who wouldn't otherwise buy a General Motors vehicle. So the different kind of car was going to be the cheaper car made from their company. General Motors believed that Saturn was the key to its long-term competitiveness and survival. At first Saturn achieved a leadership position in selling cars. In their second year they sold 16,16 cars. This made it the tenth top selling brand out of more than 00. When people originally saw the sticker price of the car they thought that it would be anywhere from $4,000 to $5,000 more than it was marked. Also that year Saturn would have sold more cars if it wasn't for limited production. More recently Saturn cars have been declining in sales. They still have a powerful fan base but it can't keep up with companies such as Ford and Mitsubishi which are both outselling them. This is partly credited to the way the cars are made. The cars are easily dented and are not of as high quality as other name brands. Saturn is trying to keep its prices low but at a cost, and this cost is the way the car is made, such as the parts that go into making it. Looking from what I read it seems like Saturn will be in business for a little while longer. I didn't read anything saying that they are going to shut down in the near future, but if sales keep on track like they are now then you never know. I think, at first, that the idea that General Motors had for the Saturn car was very good. They had all the good ideas. They wanted to make a car cheap with high customer satisfaction. That is what I look for in a car. I believe this is why at first the companies sales were great, but as time went on the prices of parts started to go up and they didn't want to make the cars price change much, because they want to offer a cheaper car. So this is why they started to make things cheaper to put into the cars. After time word spreads around and if people start talking bad about the car then less and less people will want to buy it. I believe that if in a few years the sales of Saturn cars keeps dropping then they will have to get rid of that line of cars. General Motors will not run the company anymore if they are not profiting from it. So what I see from the sales dropping every year for the last few years I doubt that they will go back up. So I believe that it is a possibility that in the next few years we may see little or no Saturn cars at all. Please note that this sample paper on Saturn Car essay is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Report on Navajo IndiansI have decided to do my report on The Navajo Indians. I became interested in them when I was on holiday in Arizona U.S.A and I met a Navajo Indian Kajo. The Navajo Indians live in the deserts of Arizona. They were hunters and warriors as well as farmers. The Navajo Indians used to rear lots of sheep. The Navajo women were very good at making silverware and weaving. The rugs that they made took about 18 months to make and every rug told a story. These stories were passed down from generation to generation. Navajo people believe that Spider Woman (one of their holy people) first taught the Navajo women to weave. After many years of fighting the white settlers the Navajo Indians surrendered to the American army in 1864 and they were put onto a reservation they still live on that reservation today, it is called Monument Valley and it is one of the largest Indian reservations. Over 000,000 Navajo Indians live on the reservation which is 15 million acres in size. Monument Valley is well known because lots of cowboy and indian films were made there. Lots of people visit the reservation each year; they want to see the huge pillars of stone that have been shaped by the weather. There are parts of the reservation that the Navajo keep private as they are still used for spiritual ceremonies.

The Navajo Indians lived in a house called a Hogan. This type of house was used by several tribes but mainly the Navajo Indians. The man built the hogan and it was one of three hogans he built. The first hogan the man built was the male hogan, used only by the men, for ceremonial things. The second hogan, the family hogan, was where up to three families slept, cooked and lived. This hogan was built by using nine main poles and this represented the nine months of pregnancy, the hogan was dome shaped and this represented the shape of a pregnant woman's stomach. You could only enter the hogan from the left side of the doorway and move round the hogan in a clockwise direction as it was thought to bring bad luck if you didn't. The third hogan that the man had to build was very small and this was used to clean yourself in. You went into this hogan and you sweated the dirt out of you a bit like a sauna. For many years the Indian was ashamed at the way they were forced to live. They were not used to being made to stay in one place and lots of them ended up as alcoholics as they drank whiskey to try and forget how bored and unhappy they were. The Indians are now starting to become proud of their ancestors and lots of them that had left reservations have started to move back. The Navajo reservation is governed by Indians themselves and they have their own laws and government. If a crime is committed by an Indian he is tried by Indian law unless it is a serious crime like murder. Many of the traditional ways of Indian life are being brought back. The Navajo are teaching their children weaving and silverwork, this is taught at school. The children must also learn the Navajo language as well as English.

Life during the Great Depression was a time of hardship and suffering for Americans nationwide. Many left their homes to search for work, hoping that one day they would be able to settle down on a piece of land of their own. George and Lennie, the two main characters in Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men, had to endure these same conditions. The two men wander from ranch to ranch, always winding up on the run because of Lennie's tendency to touch soft things. The two men had to run from Weed, their last job location, because Lennie touched a woman's dress and she complained of harassment. Incidents such as these have always happened before, and it seems to be a reoccurring pattern among the two men. Wherever they go, no matter what they do, something bad always happens to them. Their situation is the same with their new job in Salinas, where George ends up shooting Lennie. The end was inevitable, George could do nothing to avoid it. Fate cannot be altered, the result will be the same no matter what actions are taken.Steinbeck uses symbolism to show fate and how it plays a part in the lives of George and Lennie. The card game the ranch men play illustrates this. "Lennie reached for a face card and studied it, then he turned it upside down and studied it. "Both ends the same he said," he said. "George, why is it both ends the same?" (page 55). We know the cards symbolize fate and the lives of the two men. This statement shows that no matter which way you turn the card, (the lives of the men) the result will always be the same. The lack of control can be seen here. Steinbeck has Lennie realize this to show the reader that what has happened before will happen again. Another example in the card game the men play is when_______________-6 sent commentary goes hereSteinbeck uses foreshadowing to show how unavoidable fate is. One event that is foreshadowed is the death of Curley's wife. "Lennie sat in the hay and looked at the little dead puppy in front of him" (page 85). The killing of the puppy (and the mice in the beginning of the book) show how Lennie is not in control of his actions. Even though he does not mean it, he ends up killing Curley's wife. Another example of how Steinbeck uses foreshadowing to show the fate of Lennie is when Candy's dog is shot. Carlson offers to do the job. "If you was to shoot him right in the back of the head-" he leaned over and pointed, "-right there, why he'd never know what hit him." (page 45). Candy is devoted to the animal, just as George is devoted to Lennie, yet he must see the creature killed just as Lennie is at the end of the book. Lennie, like the dog, is fated to die by being shot in the back of the head. Also, foreshadowing shows the works of fate when Lennie gets in a fight with Curley. "_____________________" The pan Fate determines what happens in life, and nothing can be done to alter it. Foreshadowing and symbolism are two ways in which Steinbeck shows how fate plays a part in the lives of George and Lennie. Steinbeck's view of fate applies to the world around us.

Within the next few months, I will be faced with an inundation of information pertaining to preparation for college. I have created files on approximately 5 colleges that intrigue meand who have sent me information. Because these colleges show an interest in me, such collegeswould likely offer the foremost scholarships. My indecisiveness between which college to choose

Custom writing offers papers on writing spark

is frustrating when I hold two college brochures in front of me and I can't make a decision of even which brochure I like more. I doubt whether or not I will make a wise decision about the college that I choose to spend four to seven years of my life at, depending upon if I stay for graduate school or not. Colleges exist that I would consider for only undergraduate schoolbecause of low tuition but insufficient education, and different colleges that I would consideronly for graduate school because of exorbitant tuition. I realize that to choose the college that is best for me, I must decide which qualities in a college are most important to me. Of course the quality of education is extremely important, but other significant subjects are expense, quality of life, what to do around campus, location, and the students. I wonder if I can build the same network of friends that I have now who are amazing companions, but who can also help me with schoolwork and form study groups. Where I will live and with whom is also very important to me. My roommate could define my entire college experience. Life could be hell or it could be fantastic. The professors could also shape my experience at college depending on howinteresting, how available for help, or even how intelligent the professors are. I am learning that location and reputation are perhaps not the best reasons to choose a college. Although these factors are important, my education supersedes both. For instance, when I first started receiving letters from colleges, I instantly threw away letters from such places as Tennessee, Arkansas, and Minnesota because I thought that I would never want to live in such places. As I began to research further, I learned that a college in Minnesota that I had actually kept letters from had an excellent study abroad program. The question of acceptation often arrives in my mind as well. I consider what I would do if I am accepted at every college that I apply to, or what I would do if I were declined from my first choice colleges. I question different aspects that I would need to consider fromeach college and why one aspect is more substantial than another. I examine whether or not I truly want to spend so much time at this particular school, and why. I anticipate college admissions officers making most of my decisions for me by accepting or declining me, but I know what I need to do to make my final decision on where I want to spend some of the best years of my life. In the Theban plays, Oedipus's fate and free will was destined at the beginning by the oracle's tale. Throughout the plays, Oedipus finally realizes that free will would not stop fate from happening. As the plays unfold, no matter what's done or said to change the events, fate is always predestined.

Cheap essay writing service offers papers on Oedipus Rex

Fate in the Webster's Dictionary states that fate is "the principle or determining cause or will by which things in general are believed to come to be as they are or events to happen as they do." Oedipus's parents thought they were doing the right thing, by sending him with the shepherd to die. At the time they did not realize that they could not change fate by their own free will. Oedipus realizes this at Colonus when he said his parents did this to me so now I have to suffer because I was destined for doom. Furthermore, Oedipus's on display is typical of human nature, even though the particular situations they face may not be the same we face today. The characters in Greek drama tend to be characters you know or will some day meet. They will be your mates, your children, your in-laws, your bosses, and your colleagues. Some of them have been your teachers. (In Oedipus you might look for remnants of any principals you might have known in Creon.) But, most importantly, they will be you. The reason is that there are various ways that our choices and decisions come back to haunt us, even when we make reasonable choices from the best possible motivation. (As the Chorus says near the end of Oedipus at Colonus "no man has ever lived out of the reach of misadventure's grasping hand.") Often this is because we don't have sufficient knowledge or understanding of the likely consequences of a choice or action. "Fate" is the word often used in conjunction with classic Greek literature and drama, but fate in the sense of pre-determined outcomes is not a perspective held by many Americans today; and I think a more natural way for us to look at the actions and choices we, or the characters in the plays, have made.. It is not that one is fated before one makes a choice to have certain consequences occur; but that certain consequences will inevitably, result from certain choices and actions. In conclusion, fate and free will have the same objective to me. For instance, fate will always come out at the end of any situation. Free will alwaysleads you back to where your path is ahead. [Just as Jocasta send Lauis try to send Oedipus to die in the mountain.] [So he wouldn't kill is father and commit incest by marrying his mother.] Either way, it went, Oedipus live a still kill his father and marry his mother. That scenario shows you that you cannot control, fate and free will it just to natural to occur. Fate and free will sound just as they mean, which states the principle of a situation. The concept is like cause and effect, they both need each other to be completed as a whole. So, therefore, fate and free will work as a team pulling together for cause and effect. In the Theban plays, fate and free will played a major part in the three stories, which escalated the plots. Please note that this sample paper on Oedipus Rex is for your review only. The history of modern facial plastic surgery began more than one hundred years ago, when a few men independently began to explore a new surgical frontier of reconstructive and functional repairs that also improved appearance. By observing one another these surgeons rapidly improved and expanded the procedures each could perform. One surgeon in particular stands out from this time. Jacques Joseph was working as the assistant to orthopedic surgeon Professor Dr. Julius Wolff in Berlin, Germany, when he became interested in facial plastic surgery. Josephs first case was a young boy, who refused to attend school because he suffered such ridicule from classmates for his large, protruding ears. In 186, the boys mother approached Joseph for advice, asking if there might be surgical relief for her sons problem. After careful planning, Joseph operated successfully, earning him a place in history as the father of the modern subspecialty. (Simons -5).

Reshaping of the nose, or rhinoplasty, is one of the most common of all the plastic surgery procedures. Thousands of people every year choose this procedure to change the size or shape of their noses. Rhinoplasty can change the size of your nose, change the angle between your nose and your upper lip, change the shape of the tip or the bridge, or narrow the width of the nostrils. It may also correct birth defects or breathing problems. Teenagers are best treated after their growth spurt, around age 14-15 for girls and 15-16 for boys (Hill 7).A major technique used in plastic surgery is grafting, the transplanting or implanting of living tissue from one part of the body to another, or from one person to another, with the expectation that the tissue will grow to supply a missing part. Several techniques of skin grafting are commonly used. One is the transfer of tissue from an adjacent part to the defect by transposition or rotation of flaps of skin. Another frequently used technique, particularly in minor facial defects, is full-thickness grafting, in which the full thickness of the skin is removed and transferred as a free translplant to the defective area (Rees 155-7). These types of skin grafting have proven to be the most effectiv Please note that this sample paper on plastic surgery is for your review only. Cleopatra was the daughter of Ptolemy XII, ruler of Egypt. When he died in 51 BCE, he decreed that seventeen-year-old Cleopatra and her twelve-year-old brother, Ptolemy XIII, were to marry, in compliance with Egyptian tradition, and rule Egypt. However, this was a marriage of convenience only, and Cleopatra basically ruled alone. She was different than other Ptolemies before her. She learned the Egyptian language, whereas the other spoke only Greek, and she practiced the religious customs of Egypt. Many people viewed her as a pharaoh. Cleopatra's brother, Ptolemy XIII, resented her power and, with the help of his generals, he stripped her of her crown and exiled her to Syria. A few months later, a Roman army led by Julius Caesar arrived in Egypt. Caesar was pursuing another army, led by Pompey that was trying to keep him out of Rome. After Pompey's army was crushed, he sought refuge in Egypt where he hoped to be favorably received. Instead, Pothinos and Achillas, knowing that Pompey was being pursued by Caesar, decided to assassinate him in an effort to please Caesar. When Caesar arrived in Alexandria and learned of the circumstances of his rival's death, he was upset and seized the palace. Caesar's army was much larger that the Egyptian forces, so Cleopatra Page 2concluded that Caesar could return her to power. She arranged to have a huge oriental carpet delivered to 54-year-old Caesar. When he unrolled it, he found the 22-year-old Cleopatra wrapped inside. The two became lovers, and Caesar led his army to capture and kill the people that removed the queen from power. Ptolemy XIII drowned in the Nile while trying to flee.

Cleopatra was returned to the throne, but Egyptian law did not allow a queen to rule without a king, so she married her 11-year-old brother, Ptolemy XIV. However, she was in love with Caesar. Caesar and Cleopatra spent the next couple of months on a cruise along the Nile, during which Cleopatra became pregnant. She called her son Ptolemy Caesar so there would be no doubt who the father was. Caesar returned to Rome in 46 BCE with Cleopatra and their son. Although Caesar was hailed as the Roman dictator, Cleopatra was unpopular with the Romans because Caesar was already married. To alleviate this problem, Caesar passed a law allowing him to marry Cleopatra. This did not help her situation however, because the Romans did not like the idea of their leader being married to a foreigner. Caesar was stabbed Page 3by a group of conspirators at a Senate meeting on the Ides of March, 44 BCE, so Cleopatra returned to Egypt. Neither she nor her son was mentioned in Caesar's will, so little Octavian was made sole heir. To avoid possible conflict, Cleopatra murdered Ptolemy XIV upon returning to Egypt, and made her four-year-old son king. Works CitedChauveay, Michel. Egypt in the Age of Cleopatra. Agamemnon is the first part of the trilogy Oresteia. It was written by Aeschylus who is often called "Father of Tragedy" in literature. Aeschylus is one of the greatest Greek writers in history. He presented audiences with the "second actor" for more complex stories. He is also known for his tragic characters and Agamemnon is no exception. He possesses all the characteristics and ultimately the fate of the majority of tragic characters, death.

Agamemnon is the King of Argos who is coming back from a ten year battle with Troy. This in itself is a trait of a tragic person. The character must be a dignified person in society. In this case, it is a King who is tragic. In the battle against Troy, he was the leader of the Greek army that went because Helen, wife of Agamemnon's younger brother Menelaus, was taken there. He is an arrogant person that only sees what is best for him and does not care for others. When Agamemnon gets back to the castle and meets his wife Clytaemnestra for the first time in ten years, she praises and welcomes him back. Although Agamemnon says he does not deserve this, he allows her to complete this long introduction to his post Troy life. That is a flaw, but it is not the one to doom him.

During the journey to Troy, in order for the Greeks to have favorable wind push their ships onward, Agamemnon sacrificed his daughter Iphigenia to the god Artemis. Who would kill their daughter for own selfish victories? By his decision, it is clearly visible that he is proud and wants nothing more than victory. This tragic hubris ultimately results in his murder by the hands of his wife, Clytaemnestra. The devious spouse had been plotting his death because of the sacrifice he made of Iphigenia. When he returns, she says, "Zeus, Zeus/now fulfill our prayers…" (646). The Greek god fulfills her prayer and Agamemnon's life is taken.

It is possible that Hera's husband allowed the murder of the great leader happen because of his hubris. Excessive pride is said to be one of the worst traits of a person in Greek society. When Agamemnon arrived to Argos he was pressured to walk on a red carpet to show his superiority over his peers. Although afraid, "May no god watch and strike me down with envy from on high."(644), he still does so.

The definition of tragic is having the element of death, grief, or destruction. With Agamemnon, death is what comes to play. Zeus allows him to be taken because Agamemnon sacrificed his daughter for his own well-being as well as displaying excessive pride simultaneously. These two flaws are arguably the worst sins one can make in Greek society and therefore Zeus allowed it.

Most tragic characters in Greek stories do die or feel the emotional pain of death.

In Sophocles' Antigone, Creon was considered a tragic figure because he dealt with the suicides of his son and wife following his hubris towards them. Here in the first part of Oresteia, Agamemnon is murdered ultimately for his hubris towards his wife and the gods. The comparison of traits is evident and therefore Agamemnon is considered a tragic character.

The Beginning, The End, The Difference Creation stories have been around for generations. They have been very essential to the way certain cultures or religions believe in life. Most of all, they give insight as to how the world became of existence. We see today that religions are debating about that particular topic, the topic of who did this and who did what. To some cultures they believe that more than one god created the world, in others, they believe that one god did all the work. In these two particular stories, "The Big Bang" and the "Apache Creation Story" one will find that they both express the importance of making the Earth a perfect place to live not just for then, but forever on. In the story "The Big Bang" the world supposedly was created on accident. It started with a collision of some kind of material and when it blew up, it created the Earth and the other planets in our solar system. The thing about it is, when the Earth was made it wasn't made like it was thought to be. It had craters and plains all throughout the Earth. Unlike the "Apache Creation Story", "The Big Bang" lacked details, which were important to the reader so one could get a better feel to the story. That is one major difference in the two stories. Also, the "Apache Creation Story" contained gods that were very instrumental to the becoming of the Earth and life, as they knew it; the other story had no such thing. As stated, different groups of people have different ideas and different beliefs as to how the Earth came about, but they also have many ideas in common with one another even if they don't realize the fact that they do.

Purchase your paper on Creation Stories

In just as many ways the two stories are different, they are just as similar in a couple of ways. One such way is that at one point they both talk about bareness of the Earth and how it was mostly plains and very little to no trees. Another similarity that they both have is a chain of events helped progress the eventual creation of the Earth. In the "Apache Creation Story" the head god, "The Creator" created god after god to help him create the necessities needed to make the Earth. The gods did what they were created to do and that is basically how the Earth was created. In "The Big Bang", dust particles mixed with other materials. While mixing with other gases and elements over a period of time, it caused a chain reaction making a cataclysmic explosion creating the Earth. Even though these stories similarities may not be as similar as most would expect, they do have those thing in common. There have been stories on top stories of how the Earth and other things have been made while more rationalistic views are being brought to the foreground of culture by the day. Eventually, someone will find the universal reason as to why and how the Earth was created, but until then cultures will just have to settle for what beliefs they have now. Please note that this sample paper on Creation Stories is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Something that I have always felt very passionate about is music. Music is the only thing that has been with me through everything. It has helped shape me into the person I am today. Who I would be without music in my life, I don't know, and honestly, I don't care to know. Music has been perfect for every situation in my life so far. It can make me feel happy, excited, or relaxed. When I've had a bad day, and I just want to cheer up, all I have to do is turn on my Blind Melon or Tom Petty CD. This music never fails to put a smile on my face. It literally makes my head feel lighter, makes me breath a little deeper, and gives me the feeling of walking on air. If I close my eyes and concentrate on the lyrics, the worries of my day just float right out of my head. Tom Petty brings back so many memories of nights out with the girls when we drove around singing as loud as we could. Those were such fun times, every time I listen to Tom Petty's songs I just get happy. Blind Melon's lyrics are so true to life. Their music makes me realize a lot; it's very refreshing to me. When I'm getting ready to meet friends to go out and have fun, I always give myself a little kick by playing some Led Zeppelin or The Doors. The sounds that come from a guitar absolutely amaze me. Nothing gets me going more than listening to the amazing music by Led. It always makes me want to dance around and sing really loud. Music by The Doors just speaks to me. I have always been a huge fan of this group. Their music blows me away. When I turn on The Doors and let Jim Morrison's voice sink into my head, I can't do anything but get excited. After hearing the first note of his voice, I am always ready to get out and have a good time. When I come home from school ready to rip all of my hair out, I try to keep myself under control until I can reach my CD player. Any time I'm stressed out or tense, all I need to relax is a good Pink Floyd song. I grew up listening to this music, so it puts me at ease. Pink Floyd's music and lyrics are so intense, I don't even have to think about anything. I just lay back and let the sounds float in my head. His smooth voice has served as my everlasting backrub on countless occasions. If I feel uncomfortable in any way, and I need to calm down and relax, The Beatles will do the trick within seconds of pushing the play button. My dad has always loved The Beatles, and played them constantly during my childhood. I think songs by this group are the songs I've heard the most in my life. They are so familiar; their music makes me feel very comfortable. I feel so at home when I'm listening to them, like I'm exactly where I need to be. Music by The Beatles is so comforting to me, they will put my right to sleep.

The declaration of independence has been the symbol of American peoples desire to implement democracy in its true form. When Thomas Jefferson wrote all men are created equal, he introduced the ideology of equal opportunity for everybody in pursuit of their individual goal. This country was founded on the principle of equality among the people. The practice of this ideology is what set the American government apart from other governments at the time. However the definition of all men is not as clear as it seems. There have been a lot of discussions about Jeffersons intention when he wrote this famous statement. When examining the conditions that were present at the time, we can say that Jeffersons vision of equality was not inclusive of everyone. In 1776, slavery was a common practice in United States. The economy was largely dependent on the institution of slavery. The slaves were dark skinned people who were brought from Africa. The difference in the way the look and the color of their skin made them to be outcast. They were given the lowest position in the society. The slaves performed most of the labor work that was considered inappropriate for any white person. The general public held an opinion about blacks to be from an inferior race. There were many people who thought of blacks not to be human beings. Thomas Jefferson was born into a rich family who had the privilege to own slaves. When he became adult, he inherited his family estate and became a slave owner. In fact, the prosperity of his estate was very much dependent on the slaves he owned. He spent his whole life in the midst of slaves over the course of his lifetime. Surely he was well aware of the sub-human treatment that the slaves were subjected to. It is fair to say that Jefferson was not as much concerned about the inequality that existed between blacks and whites as he was about his economic situation. During Jeffersons time of public service, he was known to be against slavery. He believed that the institution of slavery violated the core principle of the American Revolution. When he drafted the Declaration of Independence, he inserted a paragraph that calls for the people to abolish slavery, which was taken out by other member of the congress before it was signed. However, his view of anti slavery did not mean he regarded the blacks as equal. In fact, in one of his writings, he sated that blacks are biologically inferior to whites, and he went on to say that if slaves were to become free, they should be separated from whites in order to avoid racial mixing.

Although Jefferson opposed slavery, he did not free his slaves. More importantly, he was not ready to see blacks on an equal level. I feel that this school of thought is a particularly negative discourse, if not a highly pessimistic one! However it would be naïve too ignore it, as it is clear that nuclear proliferation is a highly volatile and explosive situation. This does not warrant the acclaim the media has given it though, as there are far more devastating and relevant threats that are facing the planet already. i.e. HIV/Aids, terrorism, etcWhen we critically assess the given texts, it is important that we understand the context of all of them. As they are with out a doubt voiced within and around a specific discourse and ideology. This being that throughout the given texts there are a lot of uncertainty, speculation, and here say. More important than this is the fact that throughout the readings there is a realisation that nuclear weapons bring about a certain sort of power and control. This is formed within the dichotomy of both national and international power. There is a consistent sentiment to this throughout the texts, as according to Singh (18), nuclear weapons remain a key indicator of state and international power. (This becomes plausible if we consider the most powerful countries both economically and politically are the countries that have the largest arsenals of nuclear weapons. i.e. United States of America, Britain all have a substantial amounts of nuclear weapons, this is in accordance with the article in 'Time Magazine.'It is within this paradigm that the answer too the question posed lies. Most countries that are still acquiring their nuclear arsenals, like India for example are doing so with a particular discourse, just as the United States and Britain have done in the past. This being, to invoke the persona that they too are amongst the elite and thus should have the same sort of perceived power and authority enjoyed by the United States and Britain. It is clearly debatable whether these countries will use these weapons of mass destruction, however what is certain is the fact that with nuclear proliferation comes the perceived notion of security as they are able too defend their borders and as such the state. And this is why nuclear proliferation is not the biggest threat to our planet. When we examine the reasons why certain countries arm themselves we are able too see that it is done for the sake of protection and not for evil. However this sort of stance would be naïve as not all countries that arm themselves do so for protection. Iraq is a good example of this as they in the early 10's used their military power to invade Kuwait. Where as in the Indian example, they were arming themselves so as to strengthen their borders from further attacks from their neighbours and old enemies, Pakistan.

College Essays on nuclear non-proliferation

In closing it should be clear too see that nuclear proliferation is more a psychological threat than a physical one. As most countries don't intend too use their nuclear arsenals too invoke fear, but rather too provide the peace of mind that if they were to be attacked that they could defend themselves adequately. Therefore nuclear proliferation isn't the greatest threat to our planet yet! Please note that this sample paper on nuclear non-proliferation is for your review only. Lesson 6Key Question The biblical imagery in "The Stone Angel" is very strong and can be found numerous times throughout the novel. Many parallels can be made between Margaret Laurence's Hagar and the biblical Hagar. Aside from having the same name, both Hagar's experience a wilderness of sorts, suffer from bondage, and exhibit strong pride that leads to their downfall. The first similarity can be found when Hagar from the bible was literally cast out into the wilderness. There she must survive unknown territory and she makes the change from civilized to primitive living. The same is true for Laurence's Hagar, but in a different sense. Her experience derives form marrying Bram, and going to live on his farm. Accustomed to city life, she must learn to live in a much more rustic environment. Also, her husband, Bram, was so unrefined that she would not be seen in public with him. A well-educated woman, she married a coarse, wild man. In the bible Hagar returns to the home of her directors, and is cast out once again. Dying of thirst, she is saved by God who brings her a well of water. Parallel to this story, Laurence's Hagar also makes a second journey into the wilderness. Although she is not saved by God, she too experiences thirst slacked by rain water and eventually a religious man comes to see her with a jug of wine, before sending for aid.

The second similarity between the two Hagars is the bondage they endure. While Hagar in the bible was a slave and a handmaid, Hagar from "The Stone Angel" was entrapped by her duties as a wife and mother. After marrying Bram, her dreams of becoming a teacher were long gone, as she became a housewife whose main duties were cleaning and child rearing. "I was alone, never anything else, and never free, for I carried my chains with me" as she herself said. The final and perhaps most notable comparison between the women was the stubborn sense of pride that caused their downfall. The biblical Hagar's pride was shown with her constant taunting of Sarah, her keeper, who cast her away to suffer in the wilderness. Laurence's Hagar showed pride in a different way. Her pride led her to marry Bram against her father's wishes; this caused her entrapment. Pride is also what led her to Shadow Point. Although she was fully aware that she could not take care of herself as evidenced by her frequent calling out for Doris etc., her pride blinded her good sense, and she traveled alone none the less. In her words "Pride was my wilderness and the demon and led me there was fear."Both Hagars show a distinct resemblance both in character and in situation, even though the situations surrounding their circumstances were different. Their wilderness experiences, bondage and pride made them similar, while their positions and environments allowed them to be separate and unique women. Josephine was in an abusive relationship with her husband Paul Muscat, Vianne helped and healed the wounds of the hurt that Josephine was feeling inside and helped her overcome her fears to leave her husband and get on with her wonderful life. Vianne employed Josephine to help her get on her feet and become someone who is respected and confident.Armande Voisin was an old bitter lady before "Vianne blew into the Village like a breath of fresh air" she was grumpy and cold. Vianne helped her to enjoy life and live it to the absolute maximum. Vianne brought Armande and her grandsons reunite, she helped them connect as two people and made them happy bright people. Before Armande died Luc had an idea to throw Armande a birthday party, "My last course" Vianne prepared a beautiful feast for Armande and they had an implausible time and Armande would never forget that beautiful day she had before she died.Vianne helps someone very special to her, Guillaume Duplessis. Guillaume was a sweet man and Vianne saw that and helped him with all her power.Luc Clairmont was Armande's grandson he was a quiet boy who kept to himself rather than play with the other children in the small village, Vianne spotted him sometimes and saw he was a special boy. Armande pointed out that Luc was her grandson and she was forbidden to talk or interact with him as she was a bad influence to him according to his mother. Armande seemed upset that this was happening so Vianne decided to reunite the two to make them both happy and lead a better more fulfilling life. Vianne helped Luc step out the square he lived in and become more adventures, as soon as he tried it his stutter disappeared and he became happy and more eager to live life and enjoy it. Vianne helped a handful of people enjoy their lives and find things about themselves that they would never imagine they had in them. While she was helping all the people she was being helped to be someone else than moving from place to place and to be happy in the pace she is and with the person she and all the good things she does for people. Our staff of freelance writers includes over 120 experts proficient in change, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your change paper at affordable prices!Someone once said "the only person that likes change, is a baby with a wet nappy". As humans we feel that we don't need to change if everything is going smoothly, we think why should we? What if it turns out bad? What if I don't like the change? Well, we all face change in our life, some changes are great, others are small but nether the less there will always be change. Change, defined as "variation, modification, deviation and transformation" by the Macquarie Dictionary, can take in various forms depending on the situation or the individual. It can be categorized as a good or bad change, a physical, environmental, mental or emotional change.

Change is evident everywhere we go, and no matter where we go we can't escape it. This change can be for the good or the bad, but in the end whether the change is good or not is based on how we react to it. The poem The Door, written by Miroslav Holub from the stimulus booklet presents us with two options; the first one brought forward through the use of a metaphor, as well as a symbol of change from us opening a door, but really opening our minds to change, and to see whether we accept it or not. In stanza 1 Miroslav writes "A tree, or a wood, A garden, or a magic city", these images he has chosen, open our minds to change and start to make us think to ourselves about what is really out there in this "magic city" of ours, just like a fantasy that is waiting to come true. He has also used repetition. "Go and open the door" is used five times throughout the poem. It is constantly telling us, almost like a command, a order to change. He then finished the poem with "At least there will be a draught", using another metaphor telling us that if we do open our mind to change there will always be at least something new and fresh out there, like the breeze that comes in through an open door.

Women of the sun is a film script written by Hyllus Maris and Sonia Borg, published by Currency Press in 18. This book is about the young girl, lo-arna who hasn't opened the door to change and refuses to do so at first, but then sees the draught and accepts the change. She says to her boyfriend "I'm a boong…a bloody abo." found in scene 56. She says this when she is in denial of being aboriginal, although she has been one all her life, this is where we see paradox. Which puts forth the question, is she really changing? Lo-arna has a lot of trouble dealing with change at first as she has been brought up in a very racist family, she even hates herself because of her upbringing. We see this denial in scene 60 when she stands under the shower, with water running over her face and hair, and she is trying to wash away something. This is showing us that she really doesn't want to be aboriginal and she wants things to go back to the way they were. Towards the end of the episode she is starting to recognize the fact that she is aboriginal and that nothing can be done to change this. We see that she has finally accepted the change at the end of the episode when she is driving away and she sees her biological mother and stops the car.

All of these texts examine change and changing perspectives. The composers demonstrate the many different ways change can occur and how change may effect only an individual, group of people and possibly even the whole of society.

The Gill StoreThe store was full of old memories. The second I walked into The Gill Store, I felt a gust of old yet rich air blowing onto my face, enchanting my mind, triggering my childhood memories. The first thing that caught my attention was the storekeeper and her personality. Susie was always very positive and kind, the most interesting part of her, however, were her exciting stories of the store. Her words mesmerized my thoughts, drawing me into her world, the world of The Gill Store. The cuckoo clock on the far wall rang just as we stepped into the store, its sound so sharp yet so gentle. It was time for school, I repeatedly reminded myself. "Yat-chiu, hurry up or you'll miss the school bus again!" echoed grandma. The sound of the alarm clock kept ringing, but it had failed once again in waking me up. Its sound was too gentle and soothing for an alarm clock. As I struggled out of bed, I'd never forget to check on my old pal Mickey Mouse. He was sleeping safe and sound, just like Tim, my younger brother. The store was full of antique-looking objects an old typewriter, old cash register, antique phone, and toys that even adults would fiddle with. The store was full of reminders of the good old days, as for me, it reminded me of my childhood memories. The sight of grandma's walking stick instantly sent my lower body nerves twitching vigorously. The slower it took for me to wake up, the harder grandma would beat me with her old , wrinkled walking stick. Her walking stick was a symbol of her high rank in our family. She was the head, and she took care of all the family affairs (apart from the income). Her walking stick had a very distinctive quality, its handle had a fossil of a special flower preserved in amber. The body was made of fine wood that would never break, no matter how hard she hit. The flower in the handle was grandma's icon, and it was also my worst nightmare. My muscles kept twitching to the sight of the hanging walking-stick in The Store.
