Although Tolkien stood his ground insisting that The Lord of the Rings was not a Christian allegory, there are still many critics who see the works as very set in Christian beliefs. All throughout the novels, there are numerous relationships between his works and the Bible. A major similarity between Tolkien's works and the bible is Bilbo, the Hobbit, and the twelve dwarves who travel on the adventure with him. As time passes in the Hobbit, and Bilbo proves that he is trustworthy and loyal to his friends, the dwarves trust Bilbo's decisions following him wherever he feels they should go and doing what he says to do. This leader and followers can be linked to Jesus, who similarly had to prove his goodness and loyalty before his twelve disciples would follow his lead and preach his word. Another similarity is the twelve rings. Eleven of these rings were good and were given to the leaders of the different groups occupying Middle-Earth. One ring that represented all of the evilness of the world, made for, and worn by Sauron, ruler of Mordor, who wanted evilness and darkness to control all the lands. This can be related to the twelve disciples as well. Eleven of the disciples were true, pure, and loyal to Jesus, and would never even dream of doing evil things. Then there was Judas, the twelfth disciple. He, like the twelfth ring, brought evilness and darkness to the lives of Jesus and the other followers by betraying his leader, subsequently leading to the death of the son of God. (Novak)Throughout his journey, Frodo battles all of the evilness of the world by trying not to be overcome by the evil powers of his ring. Throughout the trilogy, he uses all of his inner strength to resist its lure, but in the end, it is only his own death that can save the world This can be directly related to Jesus's life journey. He spent all of his days trying to rid the world of evil, and promote the love of God. However, as it turns out, it was only the sacrifice of himself that could lead the world to future peace. (Novak)

College papers on Religous tones in Tolkien's works

In Lord of the Rings, the hobbit, Smeagol, killed his brother to obtain the ring of power for himself. He then became a foul and unholy creature known as Gollum, a slimy, cave dwelling, dangerous monster. In the Bible we have the story of two brothers Cain and Abel. Cain farmed the soil while Abel tended the flocks. Both made offerings to the Lord, Abel willingly giving the best he had with Cain bestowing only a token offering. When the Lord looked in favour upon Abel Cain became jealous and killed him. The Lord banished Cain to a rocky, barren land. The resurrection of Christ is quite evident in Tolkien's works. It is best seen in the Lord of the Rings trilogy when Gandalf the Grey falls into the unknown while protecting his companions from an evil monster and is believed to be dead. Later on in the story he returns to continue his magical assistance as Gandalf the White. In the Bible Jesus rose from the dead and was not recognized by the disciples he encountered. In The Hobbit, Bilbo was tempted time and time again to use the evil Ring of Power for impure reasons. However, the strong-willed hobbit would not succumb to its evil lure. He was true to himself and his strong beliefs in total goodness. This is quite similar to the story of when Jesus resists the temptation of Satan in the desert in the Book of Matthew. Jesus, after fasting for forty days and forty nights resists his urges to create food and drink for himself. He is then tested by the devil himself by being questioned on why he won't prove his divine powers by jumping off a high peak and calling on his father's angels to save his life. Jesus sticks to his pure convictions and declines Satan's evil request. Not once did he ever use his wondrous powers for his own benefit. The final relationship between religion and Tolkien's works lies in the great wizard Gandalf. Believers in Christianity feel that Christ is with them all of the time showing the way to salvation. In Tolkien's novels Gandalf never cures a blind man or a leper with his touch, but he compares to Jesus in his miracles of his magic and spell casting. The hobbits feel secure in his presence in the same way that Christians feel secure in the presence of Christ. (Novak) Throughout Tolkien's novels, the reader hopes for the triumph of good over evil but fears that when evil is so strong it will prevail. There are times when evil seems to gain the advantage only to be overcome at a later date. Christianity is similar to this. The Devil's power is strong and tempting but in the end God will prevail. Online essay help on Children Need to Play and Compete

Children Need to Play, and Compete Equally as important as the concepts taught in school, competitive sports for young children fuel the fundamental objectives for psychological growth and development. Jessica Statsky's, "Children Need to Play, Not Compete," raises controversy about children ages six to twelve and sports. According to Statsky these children are too young to participate in contact sports such as Peewee Football or Little League baseball. Sports educate little kids with the necessary social skills that they will use for life. Physical activities for youngsters play both a positive and negative psychological role teaching the necessary roughness to succeed later on. Sometimes, parents are not mentally mature enough to handle the stresses of a ball game, especially the humiliation of defeat. Attempts at changing the scoring system have failed to make sports noncompetitive. Buffering children from competition and even pain detracts from the lessons learned from sports. Ultimately, sports tutor children to succeed in life at all levels. Statsky touches on some psychological dangers, but Statsky also fails to mention some of the benefits that sports play in children's lives. Psychological advantages, such as the strength to be a leader, should far out weigh the fear that a child might shy away from sports in the future. The ability to work as part of a cohesive group should be imprinted in a child's head from a young age. When the child grows into a young adult he knows that he is not alone in the world and functions effectively as a team member in the workplace. Winning feels good; winning fairly feels even better because you know you've earned it. This is a principle that if not learned early in life an individual will never have the drive to achieve success ethically. Statsky pointed out that overzealous parents take the fun out of games and embarrass their children by partaking in physical contact off the field. Yes some parents tend to become so abhorrent that they make their child mortified that the child does not want to play. Statsky shows support for excellent ideas like psychology workshops to remedy such anger ridden parents and coaches. Adults need to learn the skills they missed in their own childhood. "Why don't we just make the games scoreless?" Statsky recounts the failed efforts of the man who tried to eliminate scoring in Little League games after attending the Adelphi workshop. If this is the case then why not throw the grading system out the window for elementary school. What does it matter how poorly little Johnny did in math? He gave it is best. Didn't he? As you can tell many people would disagree with this idea because grading is how parents, teachers, and secondary schools measure the mental growth of children. The elimination of scoring creates a playing field without purpose.

Finally, Statsky does not seem to be decided one way or another about the importance of raising a child to be competitive in today's free market economy. However, she does state "maybe we should emphasize cooperation and individual performance in team sports rather than winning." Maybe? Maybe, winning is an end where the means are cooperation, individual performance, sportsmanship, and yes, sometimes a few hurt feelings. As the saying goes, "no pain, no gain." Imagine if you can the first time you learned how to ride a bike. You probably fell off and maybe even scraped your knee. Well, cycling is a sport. According to some of Statsky's views, kids riding a bike should be in full head-to-toe padding with training wheels until they are thirteen so they may deal with the trauma of falling off. This is ridiculous. Falling off the bike and getting back on again relates to all sports; if you enjoy it and want to succeed at it, get back out there and give it your best shot, again and again. Some people like Statsky would have children playing in a non scoring environment where everyone plays and no one loses. There is a majority of people who would object to this concept because a child who grows up ready and eager to compete will become a successful adult. Among a cross section of successful adults, there would probably be a majority of competitive athletes. In the end it is not about winning or losing but how we play the game. Please note that this sample paper on Children Need to Play and Compete is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on Children Need to Play and Compete, we are here to assist you. Human weakness leads to downfallIn the play Tartuffe, by Moliere, is a work that was created to show how characters get into troubles due to their natural weakness. Blindness and lack of rationality are two most important human weaknesses, and these characteristics were performed perfectly on different characters through out the play. The most obvious weakness shared by Orgon and Madame Pernelle is they strongly believe that Tartuffe is a holy man and most close to the God, and he is able to lead them and their family members to the right direction to the God. They both are blinded by Tartuffe's hypocrisy that they cannot accept any warn of Tartuffe's fake action from their family members. Unfortunately, Tartuffe, a religious hypocrite, makes use of Orgon and Madame Pernelle's weakness to achieve his ambition. It's ironic that Orgon, who have wealth and power, under control of Tartuffe, poor and unauthorized religious hypocrite. Orgon and Madame Pernelle are blinded by Tartuffe's piety, moderate and religious fervor play on them. When Dorine, Orgon's servant, tried to tell Orgon about Elmire's illness, Orgon did not pay any attention to his wife's illness but all he can say is, " 'Ah, and Tartuffe?' and 'Poor fellow!'" (1.4.10-5). In addition, he demanded his daughter Marianne, who is in love with Velere, to marry Tartuffe to make Tartuffe become a member of the household. Those unreasonable actions demonstrate that Orgon lose his rationality at all. He supposed to concern about his wife, an intimate lover but not Tartufe, a stranger. In addition, he supposed to allow Marianne to marry her beloved Velere, but not Tartuff, who Marianne does not like at all.

Moreover, when Domis, Orgon's son, tried to reveal Tartuffe' advances towards Elmires to Oregon, Orgon became so angry that he disinherits Damis and banishes him from the house. He said to Damis, I disinherit you; an empty purse is all you'll get from me - except my curse! (.6.66-67). To punish his family members' disrespect to his flawless guest, Tartuffe, Orgon takes his power as head of household into effect in wrong ways. Except his punishment on Damis, he allows Tartuffe to get close Elmires and urges his daughter, Mariane, to marry Tartuffe as soon as against Marianne's willing. Most ridiculous thing Orgon did is the he begging Tartuffe to accept his offer by titling everything he owned to the Tartuffe in order to keep him to stay. He said to Tartuffe, "What's more, I'm going to drive them to despairBy making you my only son and heir; This very day, I will give to you aloneClear deed and title to everything I own.A dear, good friend, and son-in-law-to-beIs more than wife, or child, or kin to me.Will you accept my offer, dearest son?" (.7.5-41)What a tragedy! A man like Orgon can be so blind in believing Tartuffes saintliness that he loses his rationality and cannot make accurate judgment. As for Madame Pernelle, she has same weakness as Orgon, so blinded to see the true. Near the end of play, when Orgon finally admitted that Tartuffe was a fake, Madame Pernelle still doesn't believe that Tartuffe is an impostor. She consistently defends the innocence of Tartuffe when she said " No, my son, I'll never bring myself to think him guilty of such a thing." (5..17), and " Appearance can deceive, my son, Dear me, we cannot always judge by what we see." (5..-40). She is last person and at last minute found out the true when the officer forced them out of house with the order of new lord, Tartuffe. The opposite way Marianne and Valere express their passion for love became their weakness and this weakness almost ruins their true love. When Valere found out Orgon was going to force Marianne to marry Tartuffe, he asked Marianne what position she proposes to take. After Marianne answered him that she doesn't know and need his advice. At this point, Valere didn't express his love for Marianne, in instead he said to Mariane, "Marry the man, That's my advice to you". (.4.1). As for Marianne, she said to Valere, "Thanks for this counsel; I'll follow it, of course". (.4.15). They both express their love in opposite way. They didn't speak out what they think, but what they actually said is against their will. Their future seems very unfortunate. Fortunately for them, Dorine at this point presents the voice of reason and she comes up with a solution to situation and eventually Mariane and Valere have in common.Tartuffe takes advantage of Orgon and Madame Pernelle's weakness to achieve his goal, and unfortunately, his greed becomes his weakness leads him to downfall. After he successfully moved into Orgon's house and being taking good care, he wasn't satisfied with this situation. He attempts to seduce Elmire and marry Mariane and possess entire property of Orgon. After he realizes his hypocrisy has been discovered, he promptly turns the family out of the house. Then he reports Orgon's possession of a strongbox to the authorities. His greedy and betrayed behavior toward his host finally leads him into prison. ".... In chronicling Gatsby's tragic pursuit of his dream. Fitzgerald recreates the universal conflict between illusion and reality."Do you agree? On the surface this novel comments on the careless gaiety and moral decadence of the period. It contains innumerable references to the contemporary scene. The wild extravagance of Gatsby's parties, the shallowness and aimlessness of the guests and the hint of Gatsby's involvement in crime all identify the period of the American Dream. Despite this, below the sheer veil there lies the universal conflict between illusion and reality. Fitzgerald tells us of Gatsby's pursuit of his dream; its initiation, its failure, all that is relevant in contrasting the two totally different worlds, but showing to all how they are united into a state of complete synchronicity.A perfect state of illusionment is set up in this novel from the beginning. The aura of mystery surrounding Gatsby is a distinct way of masking the reality that deserves the recognition of being acknowledged. The true realisation of who Gatsby is as a character is only revealed towards the end of the novel when we learn he is a symbolic measurement of 'poor boy makes good' creed that American society was so proud of. The controversial idea that was embedded in the minds of all present throughout the period of The American Dream was that a complete state of happiness could be achieved through the successive aspect of acquired social prestige and materialistic possessions. This only proved to be a facade, an illusionment, a dream that was impossible to be realised. Gatsby was part of this illusion, he had the wealth and the power, but despite this he was still unable to live a life in a state of total completeness. Reality had to be recognised, the failure of the American Dream, the failure of Gatsby's dream was unavoidable. Not only because the reality of life cannot compare to idealistic dreams or peoples illusionments, but also because ideals, people's illusions, are usually far to perfect to be parralled into reality.

School papers on Great Gatsby

The emptiness of the American Dream and the aspects of self-deception have a predominant awareness in Gatsby himself. Gatsby's entire life, the very motivation that drove him was based on a fantasy - a dream that could never come true, an illusion. Gatsby was born Jay Gatz, the son of poor parents who he resented and rejected. This was the reality that Gatsby could never really acknowledge, so he propelled himself into an illusionary state and recreated himself as a person. His dream of a new and better James Gatz - Jay Gatsby - was conceptualised at an early age and came into a being as a 17 year old, when he met Dan Cody. He helped build the foundations for Gatsby's goals, his dreams and desires, he was created into the character of his dreams. He spent his life living as a false person, and illusionary character. The tragedy was that he was fooling himself. He was a false character, a make believe person, the concept of a 17 year olds dream. He could not grow or learn as an adult because he was lying to himself, never accepting reality. His life was an illusion, his dream was an illusion, and it could never be achieved because the ideals could never be parallel into reality. This tragic pursuit of Gatsby's dreams, expresses the distinct blur that is present in peoples mind between illusion and reality. The struggle and the fight for realisation of the two totally different but complexly intertwined worlds is destined an eternal process. Through this chronilisation Fitzgerald evidently displays the universal conflict between illusion and reality. Gastby strives to fulfill his dreams, and is willing to surmount any obstacles that will keep him from achieving all his desires. This including Daisy, his childhood love. Gastby tells Nick that he thinks he can epeatthe past. He thinks that hen make Daisy fall in love with him again just like the befire, like noting changed. He is driven purely by the notion that if he can equal the power and wealh of,Tom her husband, then they will once again be reunited, and as the stories go, live happily ever after. Gastby's idealistic view of Daisy Buchanan is blurred and this becomes apparent when he is confronted by reality. Over the course of five years, Gatsby has built Daisy up in his mind to be the perfect woman, someone that the actual Daisy could not be "no amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man will store up in his gohstly heart"Daisy could not help but fall short of Gatsby's dream, and so Gatsby is disappinted that the woman he loves does not exist as he imagines her to be. And so to it expresses the unviversal conflict between illusion and reality. In his mind he had created perfection, but these ideals wee impossible to e parralled into reality. Every man is born in all shapes, sizes, skin colors, and personalities. The perfect man is not necessarily the prince charming who is tall, handsome, and strong. The perfect man is just an illusion of every woman's imagination, which sadly does not exist. Then what is a perfect man? A perfect man is really the man with the right personality for a particular woman. All women are attracted to different types of personalities. When it comes to men, there are several of those types of personalities to choose from. One of the personality types is the study geek. These types of men are constantly using their time to study for their tests, do their homework, or study for fun. They usually maintain most of their quality time indoors, ignoring the fact that there is an outside world. As you take a look around these men's rooms, there are several books stacked on their tables and written paper scattered everywhere. Unless the women of these men are also study geeks, they may have some difficulties in taking time away from them. In that case, if they are both study geeks, they can study together and become study geek lovers. Women may have an advantage for being with a study geek because in the future a study geek may become wealthy and very successful in their careers. Another type of personality is a sports addict. These men are always talking about, watching, playing, or looking at something that has to do with sports. They will know everything about their favorite sports. For example, they will probably know the names of all the players on every team, etc. When watching the game, these men are absolutely glued to the television. They cannot be interrupted; if you tried to talk to them they will simply ignore you. If you do happen to get their attention while interrupting the game, they will become very aggravated. This would probably result in an argument. These men also have jerseys, logos, posters, pictures, and memorabilia of their favorite players and teams on their walls. They will have sports magazines, such as Sports Illustrated, spread everywhere around their rooms. Also when they read the newspaper, they will only read the sport sections and ignore the rest of the sections. These men are in their own world when it comes to sports. The third type of personality is a car enthusiast. These men can be found in their garage most of the time. In their garage, they will likely be attached to their cars as if they were their second girlfriends. For example, they will talk to the cars and give them names, as if they were human beings. Most men like to give their cars female names because they tend to feel more comfortable. Not only do they treat their cars like humans, but also they treat them as if they were their newborn babies. For instance, these men will wash, wax, and change the oil in their cars almost everyday. They will clean their cars more than they will clean their own rooms. They will not let anyone, not even themselves, eat in their cars because it causes stains on the seats, crumbs left behind on the floors, and awful smells that last a long time. If there was a simple scratch on a car, any of these men will be able to notice it within seconds. They will immediately get their cars fixed because their cars must remain perfect. These types of men would not be able to survive without their cars.

Another type of personality is a video game lover. These men waste most of their time watching or playing video games on their television. Video game lovers usually spend more time playing games than they do with their schoolwork or at their jobs. Every minute, they need to be in front of their television, punching the buttons on the game controller until they get blisters on their fingers. They will never put down the control. They will play constantly until they have accomplished their goal of beating the game. However, guess what? Once they have beaten that game they have worked so hard and long on, they will start a new one and it all begins again.Four types of personalities for men are the study geek, sports addict, car enthusiast, and video game lover. These types of personalities are only a few of the many. Every man does not have to fall into one of these categories because of the wide variety of men. Unfortunately, I happen to be with the video game lover. He is constantly playing a particular football game all day long. I often think that he spends more time playing games than being with me, but what can I say? Men always seem to have some small fault to keep them busy for us women. Even though my man can be a video game fanatic, he is considered perfect for me. He may have his faults, but so does everyone else, including myself. There arent many people who can be called the best in America. Michael Jordan, who has won numerous championships, can be considered the best in the game of basketball. Tiger woods is said to be the best golfer ever. George Washington is said to be one of the best presidents in America history. Among these great figures on America are sometime forgotten American authors. Mark Twain is one of the best authors to ever walk on American soil. He wrote numerous books and short essays that are now considered a work of art. His life and his writings were also extremely interesting. Mark Twain had hard times as well as good times, like all of us in this world. Unfortunately, there was mors bad than good for Twain. Despite the pain he endured, Twain contributed to American Literature through his famous writing that are still being read today. In order to find out how a man could write some of the greatest books in history, we must start at the beginning. Mark Twain was not always known as Mark. At the age of nine, Samuel got to play outside because he was no longer sick and had completely recovered. He later wrote about these childhood experiences in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. At age twelve, Samuel had to deal with the tragic death of his father. This completely dirupted his life. Soon after ha had to get out of school and start working so he could support himself and his family. Samuel went looking for a job. He took a job as a printers apprentice hoping to someday help his brother, Orion, in his newspaper. Later in his life, he decided to become a river pilots apprentice. This is where he took the name Mark Twain. Mark Twain means that a boat can leave port and it is safe to go on ots voyage. Susy past away from meningitis and Jean from an epileptic seizure and drowned in her bath. The last of his children, Clara, lived to be eighty- eight years old. Unfortunately, she only had one daughter who died without having any child of her own. Twain has no living descendents. Twain attended school until the age of twelve and learned the necessary to reaed and to write. It seemed that he carried all his information through all his desire to write. Imagine if he would have still gone to college? How would have been the difference? There was only a few influential people Twain mentions in his writings. One of the two men were Joseph Goodman, the paper founder, and Dan Quille, a star writer. Twain never got to write a book about the things that influenced him, if he had he would have surely written about the bible (De Koster 16) One of Mark Twains very first published sketches was A Gallent Fireman a one page paragraph anecdote in January 16,1851. This was about a young man who became a hero by distinguishing a fire in a grocery store. He was very proud of this because it was his first and proud that people actually liked it. This is what made him want to write more. Next, he would write his most famous novel called The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. He had many works done but one sad acount would be whn he wrote about the death of his daughter Susy. He wrote about the way he and his wife couldnt be there because they were in Europe when she died. He had many published books, novels, and essays that are still being read to this day. Mark Twain achieved many goals. He wrote what he thought and what he experienced. Twain got to publish mostly all of them. His first proudly said award was recieved in 1888 for Honorary M.A, Yale Universtiy and another in 101 for Litt. Dual federalism The Constitution is a compact among sovereign states, and the powers of the national government are fixed and limited. Cooperative federalism The Constitution is an agreement among people who are citizens of both state and nation, so there is no firm distinction between state and national powers.Democratic government is a political system based on the principles of freedom and equality. Democratic government mental systems embrace multi-party Parliament. They advocate free and fair elections, where every voter has one vote, and no vote counts more than another does. Democratic governments advocate basic Civil liberties such as Free Speech, Freedom to Worship, and the Freedom to move. In a liberal democracy, Government is limited in its powers. Liberal governments are willing to be "checked and balanced" over their actions. And, are ultimately accountable to the voter. Public policy can be both tailored for local needs, as well providing guidance for issues that relate to the country as a whole. Federalism solves the problem of governing a large country. Constitution could not destroy the states. Federalism balances the virtues of nation building promised by a strong national government with the responsiveness promised by the states. Enhances citizen control, expands participation, and promotes innovation. Checks excessive power-use and promotes diverse views. B. Federalism provides a multitude of arenas for decision making; it keeps government closer to the people; and it makes it possible to experiment with innovative policies at the state or local level. A federal system also allows the political and cultural interests of regional groups to be reflected in the laws governing those groups. There can be inequalities between states as well as policy gaps between the Federal and state governments. There can also be endless conflict between the Federal and state systems as to who shall dominate a specific area of policy.

Drawbacks to federalism Local self-rule may not always be in society's best interests, and powerful state and local interests can block progress and impede national plans. National powers may also be expanded at the expense of the states. It is difficult to coordinate policies among three levels of government, and the lack of uniformity of state laws can complicate business transactions. The United States The United States has a federal system of government. Its federal structure was the result of historical circumstances, namely, the presence of thirteen independent and sovereign states after independence was declared in 1776. Nevertheless, the federal structure also solved the problem of providing effective and responsive government for such a large country. Why it works There are advantages and disadvantages of having a federal form of government. Chief among the advantages is the following It enhances citizen control; expands participation; promotes innovation; checks excessive power; and promote diverse views. Federalism does come with a price, namely the costs of increased complexity and duplication, unequal treatment and other inequities, unhealthy competition among the states, and the undercutting of some national policymaking priorities. It is argued that the states are closer to the people and therefore are able to provide their citizens needs. What the distribution of power guarantees a decentralised development and lastly the division of power is a safeguard against tyranny, in effect producing political stability. The disadvantages can also be grouped into three categories for convenience. Firstly, the weakness in the home government and deficient authority. Secondly, dissolution by rebellious states. Lastly, trouble expense and delays that occurs with complex system of legislation and administration that they have adopted. When looking specifically at the Australian Federal System it is obvious that the advantages no longer exist and the advantages are overweighed by the numerous disadvantages. In America, the advantages weigh out against the disadvantages for this large country, and the people are willing to help make this form of government work. Yet in Australia, it is truly time to make major reforms for it to remain an effective governmental process. There is not a perfect form of government where everyone gets what they want, in no way is this possible. Although with America's form of democratic federalism, the majority of the nation is granted access to their wants and even more to their needs. In the horizon of the future, the Americans and their influential political leaders are working towards the betterment of their government with each passing year. In some countries, such as that of Australia, the government needs to re-asses their democratic federalism to improve upon their society. The Vietnam war is something, that no one can forget. There are a lot of different opinions and emotions involved. They say the war started on August 7, 164, when Johnson was president, and he sent hundreds of thousands soldiers into Vietnam to bomb North Vietnam.USAs Participation in the war was to stop Noth Vietnam in tresspassing into South Vietnam.USA also saw communism as their biggest enemy, and felt that it was their duty to stop communism, America was very committed to a theory called the Domino Theory America believed that communism was likely to spread very rapidly when a country became communistic, and if just one country fell to it then many others would follow, just like a game of dominos.

President Kennedy plan was to help South Vietnam in helping itself, adn not to send American troops into Vietnam. But that was all changed when President Kennedy was assassinated and President Johnson came to power. One of the first things he did was to send American troops into Vietnam, and he was also the one who gave permission to use a chemical agent called Agent Orange. The consequenses of Agent Orange were dreadful. Many thousands of Vietnamese people became sick of it, and out of many their children were born deformed. The next president was Nixon, who was elected because he promised to take all of the American soldiers out of Vietnam and stop the war.In the beginning of the war, nobody knew anything about it. All Americans who were in America knew nothing, but it changed when the media became interested in the Vietnam war and began to write about it, and film it. The whole world now saw what a terrible war it was, people began to think about it and created their own opinions. They saw how children and women were tortured, raped and killed, villages burned and other dreadful things. The Support in the war changed to aversion, and a lot of enthusiastic Americans, changed to Americans with a lot of rage and anger. Nobody wanted to see people in pain and living a life in pain. So many Americans, and people around the world, started demonstrations against the war. One thing someone said was, that the war in America would not stop before the war in Vietnam stopped. The demonstrations became more and more violent. In one university in America there was a demonstration, where four people got themselvs killed by the millitary. But the demonstration I consider as the most effective and most violent, was a demonstration in Vietnam. there were a couple of munks who set themselves on fire and burned to death, it was a terrible suicide demonstration. I think that it had a major affect on everybody, who were involved in the war.As the Veterans came home, they got a stunning surprise. People hated them for have been in the war. Most of the soldiers did not understand why the American people hated them because the Veterans belived that they had been fighting to protect the United States of America and it's people. They also belived that they fought for a good reason, and were proud of what they had done, but the American population thought otherwise. The society was closed for most of the Veterans, their family didn't understand them, their friends didn't understand the either. So many Veterans felt that they had not place in society and therefore resigned for another tour in Vietnam. The Veterans weren't able get jobs, and many became addicted to drugs or began to sell them to make a living. Some even commited suicide. It wasn't until years after people began to see signs of post-traumatic-stress-dissorder in the Veterans, and it took several more years to begin to understand it.It wasn't until 18 that Veterans were acknowledged and recognized for their service and sacrifice, by the construction of Vietnam Veterans Memorial which Veterans themselves started! My opinion about the Vietnam war, is that the war was a show of power "threat" to the Sovjet Union, and to show what would happen if a country became communistic, but it failed because of the fact that the Vietnamese people had become acustomed in defending their country. And because of the failure the United States of America wanted to forget all about the Vietnam War, and in the process the Veterans became victim's of their countries fault! One of the reasons that the Vietnam War became so well known is because of the fact that it was the first war to be seen live in television, and therefore the average person became aware of the cruelty that is war. If you look back in history the Vietnam War wasn't so different from all other war's, the only difference is that humanity has perfected the art of kill a little bit more. Please note that this sample paper on The Vietnam War is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on The Vietnam War, we are here to assist you. The culture of sports animates societies ideologies of inequality between race, class and gender. Sports have held racial barriers in place and have kept beliefs of inequality alive. Sports are more than expressions of athletic ability; they are expressions of masculinity and manhood. It is significant to take a critical viewpoint with sports in order to understand what our fascination with it implies about our society.

Male athletes are under pressure to succeed so that they can maintain the masculine image society has constructed for them. Sports have traditionally been limited to males and they idolize the brutalization of males. In Connell's Masculinities, he delves into the meaning of what it is to be masculine. He describes masculinity in terms of behavior, in contrast to femininity, in essence being defined as "not-femininity." An un-masculine person would be "peaceable rather than violent, conciliatory rather than dominating, hardly able to kick a football and uninterested in sexual conquest." This is true in our modern society, and is especially evident in physical sports such as football. Poor male performance in sports is compared to a women's natural performance, an example being that when a male is mocked for his inability to excel in physical activities he is compared to a girl ("you run like a girl").

Cheerleaders in the 0th century were typically male but are now predominantly female. Cheerleaders have become sexual figures, for a man to be a cheerleader would be to defy societies modern definition of masculinity. The male cheerleaders image "stressed aesthetics as well as skill." This image was replaced by females and the image of cheerleading was trivialized, "emphasizing isolated body parts and minimal ability." These completely different images of cheerleading, changing as cheerleading shifts from a male dominated sport (where it was idealized) to a women's (becoming trivialized), are a reflection of our societies cultural values about gender.

Cheerleading has become demeaning to women, whereas they are present in the games only to cheer males on and to entertain the male crowd. They first started to change the appeal of cheerleaders to keep audiences attention during intermissions (an audience of mainly men). When they saw what a great marketing effect this was cheerleaders became more of sex symbols. In a way, the better looking the cheerleaders are the more the team they cheer for gets recognized. Although cheerleading is a sport, women are not applauded for their athletic abilities but rather for their image as sex symbols. Their outfits have gone from conservative and respectable to sexy and scantily clad. The honey shots during games where they show close-ups of the cheerleaders shows how sex has become intimately linked with sports in our culture. Women are used to market and sell sports. My experiences of cheerleading and high school sports are consistent with the trivialized image of cheerleading.

My sister was on the cheerleading team in high school and had practice everyday for at least three hours after school. The cheerleaders worked out just as much as the guys did for their sports; however they didn't even get half the amount of credit the guys did. They weren't viewed as athletes and did not have the same respect sports players had. My brother, who was also in high school at the time was on varsity football. If my sister would ever make comments about how she was exhausted form practice or had a grueling workout, my brother would comment saying "what are you complaining about? All you guys so is jump up and down and say cheers." They were also viewed as sex symbols. Many guys I knew that went to watch the football games would also go to check out the "hot cheerleaders," not to check out their no routine, for instance, that they may have worked so hard on. When people would refer to other schools football teams, the cheerleaders looks always came up. Comments would be made saying either "their cheerleaders are 'bangin'" or "their cheerleaders are 'busted'." This just goes to show how cheerleading is not only linked with professional sports, but with high school sports as well. The trivialization of female sports and the exploitation of women made out to be sex symbols are learned from our first exposures to sports.

White men's masculinities are not only constructed in relation to women, but also in relation to black men. Friday Night Lights shows the prevalence of racial inequalities in a small town in. Football becomes so much a part of the players lives, the only times they feel important is when they are playing on the field. Many of the black players were uneducated and were mistreated in the segregated in the white schools. Whites only wanted blacks in town if they were entertaining them by playing football. Their only purpose was being on the football team, it was a way for them to define their masculinity, to become in a sense "men." In one scene a black player is said to be a "dumb ol nigger" without football.

The Imagination of ShakespeareMore strange than true. I never may believeThese antique fables, nor the fairy toys. Lovers and madmen have such seething brains,

Purchase your paper on A Midsummer Night's Dream

Such shaping fantasies, that apprehendMore than cool reason ever comprehends. The lunatic, the lover, and the poetAre of imagination all compact.Once sees more devils than vast hell can hold. That is the madman. The lover, all as frantic,Sees Helen's beauty in a brow of Egypt. The poet's eye, in a fine frenzy rolling,Doth glance from heaven to earth, from earth to heaven. And as imagination bodies forthThe forms of things unknown, the poet's penTurns them to shapes, and gives to airy nothingA local habitation and a name. The play and film A Midsummer Night's Dream illustrates many different themes running throughout the story. The prominent theme seems to be that if you do something for the sake of love, things will work out for the best in the end. Another theme was that imagination and dreams will help us find what we are looking for. If we look into the depths of this story of meddling in affairs of the heart, we will find these two themes unfolding. The basic plot of this story is of two people, Hermia and Lysander, who are deeply in love and wish to be married. However, it is not feasible for them to simply be together because the culture that they live in disapproves of it. Hermia's father is trying to force her to marry Demitrius, a man who her father thinks is better for her. As the plot thickens, another character is introduced, Helena. Helena woos after Demitrius and is willing to do anything to be with him. When Hermia is faced with the ultimatum of marrying Demitrius or being put to death, Lysander devises a plan to flee the city and go where they can be together. When the four people chase each other into the forest, the fairies of the woods decide to intervene. The king of the fairies orders another fairy, Puck, to place a drop of juice from a special flower on Demitrius' eyes while he is sleeping. The magic flower allows the subject to fall in love with the first person he sees after coming in contact with the flower's juice. Puck messes up and puts the juice on Lysander's eyes. When Lysander awakes the first person he sees is Helena. Puck quickly realizes his mistake, finds Demitrius, and also places the juice on his eyes. While both men are chasing after Helena, Hermia wakes up and wonders what is happening. After an extensive drama of the fairies trying to fix everything, the whole thing gets worked out. Lysander and Hermia resolve everything, and Demitrius, still under the flower's power, loves Helena. When Hermia's father finds the four asleep at the edge of the woods the next day, Demitrius declares his love for Helena and states that he no longer wants to marry Hermia. Hermia and Lysander are finally given permission to be together, and everyone ends up happy.Just from this brief summary we can see the theme if you do it for the sake of love it will work out for the best. Hermia and Lysander fought for their love by fleeing the city and running into the woods. They wanted to escape the restrictions of their culture and find their happiness and love without anyone interfering. Ironically, because the fairies interfered they were eventually allowed to be together. Helena also chased her love when she entered the woods. Although she went through some heartache of feeling mocked when both men suddenly and unexpectedly wanted her, she eventually got the man she wanted, and she was pleased. Fighting for love was worth all the heartache and confusion. The theme of imagination and dreams helping to find what we are looking for is a bit more complicated. In the very end of the story the four main characters perceived they had dreamed everything that happened to them while they were in the woods. It is very possible that they thought this simply to make sense of it all. Also by thinking this, they hint at the idea that you can make your dreams come true if you want them enough. Whatever the reason, it seems to be a good way to end the story and put the viewer's mind at ease. We can all rest a little easier knowing that the characters did not keep the events in the woods looming over their heads, but rather put them away in the back of their minds as a mere night of imagination.Shakespeare definitely had his imagination running wild when he wrote this play. This story is full of fanciful characters, love, lust and humor. As you watch this magical story unfold, you definitely feel amused. The themes intertwine wonderfully to create a story that has lasted for many centuries. When you read or watch this story just remember one thing, it all works out in the end. Please note that this sample paper on A Midsummer Night's Dream is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In the timeless novel, Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, Pip, the protagonist, and his brother-in-law, Joe Gargery, have a relationship like no other. This developing kinship proves itself to be one of mutual friends in the commencement, but as the novel prolongs, Pip thinks of himself as superior to Joe and becomes condescending towards him. In the conclusion of the novel, one may come to understand that the relationship between Joe and Pip is easily compared to a circle. By the end of the novel Pip and Joe's relationship has clearly made a 60° rotation and Pip and Joe are acquaintances once again. The novel begins with Pip and Joe as equals. Pip even admired Joe. He exemplifies his admiration for Joe after he and Joe had shared an emotional night together. Joe had explained to Pip about his alcoholic father and how he felt about Mrs. Joe Gargery, Pip's sadistic sister. He also tells Pip about how it was he that induced Mrs. Joe to bring Pip into their household after Pip's parents had died. Pip reflects on this moment and exclaims, "Young as I was, I believe I dated a new admiration of Joe from that night. We were equals afterwards, as we had been before; but, afterwards at quiet times when I sat looking at Joe and thinking about him, I had a new sensation of feeling conscious that I was looking up to Joe in my heart. (Ch.7 Pg. )" At that particular moment, Joe's status as a blacksmith did not matter to Pip. Pip admired Joe for the benevolent person that he was. Pip and Joe's relationship was like one of any two best friends. They were equals, but there was always that admiration for the other who possessed that special quality. Pip sparked the first change in his relationship with Joe steadily as he became more and more haughty. At one point in the romance, after Pip had come into "great fortune", Pip was so ashamed of Joe, that he didn't even want to walk with him on the morning of his departure, where he was to go to London and become a gentlemen. Pip recollects, "…that this purpose originated in my sense of the contrast there would be between me and Joe, if we went to the coach together. (Ch.1 Pg. )" Pip didn't want anybody to see that he had come from a "common" condition. Moving onto London, Pip did not want to be associated with a blacksmith and he thought that there was a significant difference between him and Joe. Opening the second half of the novel, Pip continues his condescension towards Joe. Upon his sister's death, Pip acts remorseful towards Joe, who has just lost his wife. To Joe's face, Pip shows compassion and promises that he will visit Joe often, all-the-while, knowing that he will not be back . "…I should not come back…(Ch.5 Pg. )", Pip confessed to himself as he left his hometown. One can conclude that at this time Pip still thinks that he is better than Joe and does not belong in the same small town as he. Pip obviously has come to believe that one's surroundings is a definition of one's true self. He believes that a gentlemen, like himself, and a blacksmith, like Joe, do not belong together and that he is a better man that Joe is or can ever be. The relationship between Joe and Pip is like the relationship between Donna and Marie, two sisters. Donna, who is four years older than Marie is much like Pip in the sense that she thinks she is better than Marie and doesn't like to hang out with her little sister. Marie, in comparison to Joe, still loves her older sister regardless. Pip lightens his relationship with Joe, after being awfully ill. Joe takes care of Pip during this horrid period and when Pip comes to his senses he is finally thankful for Joe's fellowship. Pip repeatedly compares himself at that moment to the way he was when he was a child. "…I was like a child in his hands…(Ch.57 Pg. )", Pip thinks back on a moment when Joe was tending to him. When Pip was a child him and Joe were best friends and were equally loyal to each other. The comparison that Pip continuously makes between their relationship years ago to that moment represent that the circle of friendship between the two was now completed. The developing friendship between Joe and Pip, proved itself to be very original. The two went through many things together and in the end they made it. Joe and Pip were the best of friends in the beginning of the novel, and though Pip's change in attitude pulled them apart throughout the story, they were friends in the end of the novel.

A conversion of our governmental system to an Athenian model would be not only foolish but potentially dangerous to the future of our country as well. It has been suggested that the representative form of government was chosen because of the logistical problems of counting votes in an era with no computers or FedEx. However, in doing research and listening to the biographies of several men present at the Philadelphia convention, it seems clear that the decision was reached with great thought and wisdom. One advantage of electing an individual to represent a large group of people (and hence several socio-economic groups) is that the representative is beholden to the entire body. Because the representative depends upon the approval of a majority for his continuation in office it is difficult for him/her to favor one faction to the detriment of the others without risk of losing his position. In this way equilibrium is attained in which no group completely dominates another and no minority voice is unheard. It is a credit to the wisdom of the founders that they were able to devise a system which not only accounts for the selfish nature of a man but uses that ambition to its favor! In contrast, within a democracy the individual owes allegiance only to his own self-interests and beliefs. While many of us purport ourselves to be persons of integrity and fully aware of our civic responsibilities, we seldom hold such lofty opinions of our neighbors. In a country where the poor and middle-class far outnumber the wealthy who would protect the rights of the upper-class? Who would protect the rights of Jews and Muslims to worship in their Synagogues and Mosques? At a time when factions change with the tides, how can the rights of any minority be protected from the whim of the majority? It is interesting to note that we are all, in some way, a minority - it just depends on how you slice the pie. In 188 James Fenimore Cooper wrote, "It is a besetting vice of democracies to substitute public opinion for law. This is the usual form in which masses of men exhibit their tyranny." This seems eerily akin to the "...tyranny of the masses" which Greek philosophers warned of over 000 years earlier. It is similarly disquieting to realize that none of the democracies of ancient times still exists.Let us suspend distrust in the motives of our fellow man and suppose for the moment that we will all act (read vote) in the best interests of the whole of society. Even were this improbable suspension of belief possible, pure democracy would still face formidable challenges, chief among these being a massive amount of legislation. A cursory review of the 107th Congress web site reveals a mind-numbing workload of Resolutions, 8 Concurrent Resolutions, 81 Joint Resolutions, 610 Bills, and 414 Amendments facing the House of Representatives alone!

In our current system we elect representatives with the expectation that they will acquire a fundamental understanding of the issues facing the nation and so be able to make informed legislative decisions. The only way they are able to perform their duty is by working full-time and hiring a staff to assist them in understanding and responding to the issues. In contrast, a direct democracy would require that each voter obtain a similar level of understanding so that he/she could likewise make prudent choices. Reality tells us that few citizens have the benefit of a staff and even fewer the means to contemplate politics on a full-time basis. Finally, the issue, which was pushed to the fore of the American conscious on Sept. 11, 001 national security. In a "true" democracy, national security would be virtually impossible to enforce. How would the citizenry be able to engage in honest debate over issues involving, for example, intelligence operations or defense capabilities without endangering the very mechanisms put in place to protect them? Representative systems minimize this liability by limiting the number of people involved in discussions of such sensitive topics. The result is a much higher level of accountability and security as the source of a breach is easier to discover.Legislative overload, national security, and the power-grabbing nature of man are all good reasons to continue with the form of government the founding fathers laid out for us. The failed democracies of ancient Greece and Rome provided compelling evidence of what the future holds for a true democracy. As John Adams said, "Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide." How mightthis influence our real lives?Descarte lived in the time of Galileo, and Galileosnew science is always in the background of Descartesmethod of doubt.(remember that , method of doubt)Galileo raised the doubt that what we think we see wemight not see at all. (for example)colors seemed to bemore in the minds of men and women than in the objectsthemselves. and if we can be mistaken about somethingso seemingly clear as the color of an object,Descartes reasons could we not be mistaken about muchelse besides?this is where he decides to follow his method of doubtto its conclusion, and find at least one thing hecannot doubt. since experience gained from ones senses can bedoubted, he chooses to use the REASONING OF HIS MINDas his only guide and also as his proof.(you wouldhave to read the paper to find out how he comes todoubt everything and his reasonings behind it) but the one thing he cannot doubt at all is his ownexistence now, he is not talking about the physicalbody, for he has doubt that any corporeal (made outof matter) thing really exists. no being,no object, nosubstance,no beam of light, nor speck of dust iswithout a doubt of being real.so his conclusion from meditation is so after having reflected well and carefully examinedall things, we must come to the definite conclusionthat this proposition I AM, I EXIST, is necessarilytrue each time that i pronounce it, or mentallyconceive it. the more famous formulation of this truth (fromdiscourse on method 167) is COG ITO,ERGO,SUM. which is Latin for I THINKTHEREFORE I AMto try to explain this in my own words can get tricky.even when Descartes tries to re-state it, it seemslike double talk. but i will try.if you look at your own hand and think you see it andconsider that as proof that you do in fact have ahand, you are not taking into account the possibilitythat you are dreaming of looking at your hand.youcould just be asleep.and if you are just dreaming thenyou really dont know for sure if you have a hand.and what if you project that not just to this oneinstance of looking at your hand, but instead ontoyour life as a whole? maybe your childhood was a very long chronologicaldream of what YOU SUPPOSED a childhood should be. and (god Im starting to freak out) it follows thatany person you know is just a figment of yourimagination. if you (Paula) are in fact the one thatis dreaming then (Dave) does not exist. he is just apart of your consciousness that you give certainattributes and henceforth recognize as (daveness)so if you project this towards everybody andeverything, you must admit that the only thing thatCANNOT be an illusion is the fact THAT YOU AREDREAMING. and since you cant deny that, that must atthe very least be real. Descartes goes on to try to describe himself with thisnewfound truth. since he has stated I think thereforeI am, he asks what or who am I. his answer to this is I am a thing which thinks orto use it in our analogy I am a thing which dreams (now just to calm myself down and maybe you too) thisdoes not remove the possibility that MOST of what youthink is real, is in fact real, but you just cant be100% sure. on a less philosophical level i remember Dr. Phil(yeah i said it) asking one person about an argumentand then asking the other, and he brought notice tohow each of them had a very different story about;what the argument was about, who started the argument, what was said during the argument, and so on.this does not go to show proof of I THINK THEREFORE IAM but more to how easily a person can trickthemselves into believing something that did nothappen.these two people (this is kind of a stretch) couldapply Descartes method of doubtto try to get down to the core facts of a situation orthe core issues they are disagreeing about.this might help toohttp//www.utm.edu/research/iep/d/descarte.htmok i know this is prolly way more than you asked forbut remember...you asked for it! Nadine Gordimer began writing early, from the beginning taking the pathologies and

everyday realities of a radically divided society as her subject. She still lives in South

Africa, in Johannesburg. Her decision to remain in the country through the years of

political repression has reflected her commitment to her subject, to the society to which

she feels she belongs, and to her vision of a postapartheid future. Gordimer has drawn

criticism both for her apparent lack of attention to feminism in favor of race issues and

for the wholeness and unfashionable completeness of her novels--their plottedness,

meticulous scene painting, fully realized characters. However, the searching symbolism

and complexity of her narratives generally work against such judgments. A prominent

feature of her writing is to give a number of different perspectives on a situation, in some

cases most poignantly those of apartheids supporters, and in this way to represent the

broader anatomy of a diseased potitics. Gordimers subject, as she emphasozes, is much

more than apartheid; it is the human being in history.

In the story Good Climate, Freindly Inhabitants, the narrator plays many important roles

in the story. The narrator is 4 trying to look 5. Her hair has had too much of bleach and permanents, and her face shows her age. However, she prides herself on her figure, and she wears uniforms made for girls, not women. Thus, she fools herself, rather than anyone else. This best describes the narrators apperance. When the narrator boasts of friends among garage customers and those who pass with their dogs, she is revealing her loneliness. Actually, she has only one friend, with whom she goes to the movies on Fridays. She has Sunday lunch whenever she chooses with an old couple who feel sorry for her. It is ironic that she cannot value Jack, whom she should consider a good friend, because of his race.

The narrators relationship with her daughter increases her social isolation. She disapproved of her daughters marriage, implies that she disapproves of her grandchildren, and has seen the family only once in what could certainly be ten years. The narrator views blacks as children, and calls them "boys" no matter what their ages. When she wants to assert her superiority, she sends them on personal errands. As much as she longs for a friend, she could never consider relating to a black in that way. She complains that she works in absolute social isolation, and when Jack befriends her, she cannot recognize his friendship.

The narrator is drawn to the rhodesians physical appearance because he is young, blond, suntanned, and clean-cut. His appeals for her financial aid encourage her to reach out to him. Given her loneliness, she needs whatever relationship he offers her, and she does her best to interpret his behavior as that of a person having a run of bad luck. The reason the narrator and the Rhodesian have no names is becasue with a first-person narration, either the narrator would have to reveal her own name or someone else would have to call her by her name. Jack cannot call her by her name because his lower social status prohibits it. (Jack calls her "missus" occasionally, but usually nothing.) The Rhodesian has no interest in the narrators name. He never reveals his name, and the term "Rhodesian" associates him with the spurious circumstances of his arrival.

Other Scholors have said that Gordimer creates immediacy and power by letting the reader enter the narrators mind and view the world as the narrator sees it , with her prejudices and her vulnerablity. The narrators spoken and unspoken thoughts ironically conflict with the reality of the outer world as revealed by Jacks and Rhodesians words and deeds. Specific examples include Narrtors and Rhodesians contrasting attitudes toward her age; Narrators comments about friends in contrast with her relationship with Jack; and the Narrators view of the Rhodesian in contrast with his treatmeant with her.

"GoodClimate, friendly Inhabitants" is the defty told story of an aging white bookkeeper. Who is afraid of dying a lonely death. The story derives its power from this womans relationshipwith two men. Out of the depths of her loneliness and against her better judgement, she finds herslef attracted to a good-looking, neer-do-well white male, young enough to be her son, who conveniently lives off her as long as he can. Meanwhile, she confides in Jack, a black man who has worked with her at the garage for years. Jack is a good friend to her listening, advising, caring, and protecting. However, tragically, she cannot breach the color barrier to value and take comfort in his friendship.

Gordimer tells the story from the womans point of view, seeing and evaluating the two males and the woman herslef through the womans eyes. The technique of first-person limited narration adds irony, mystery, and the question of the reliability to the story, for the woman often presents herself and others as she subconsciously chooses to see them.

I am going to do an experiment to measure how the number of coils of insulated wire around the iron core effects the amount of paper clips attracted to the electromagnet. These are the things that could affect my results - weight of the paper clip, number of coils, shape of the core and the material it is made out of, the size and age of paper clip and how old the nail is. If I didn't keep these variables in mind they could affect the pick up number and therefore not made the results fair. For this experiment I will use a clamp, a nail, an ammeter, a power pack, four wires and some paperclips. Firstly I will set up the apparatus (mentioned above) as shown in the diagram below. I will then increase the number of coils on the nail each time by five and see if this makes a difference as to how many paper clips the nail will pick up.

In my experiment I will measure the number of paper clips picked up by the nail and the current (number of amps) the ammeter is on. To check and improve my results I will repeat my experiment. The biggest problem with using this method is that it is not particularly accurate and it can be very hard to attach the paper clips once you have reached a certain lengthTo keep this experiment safe I have to address the possible hazards and minimize them. The coil could heat and burn the plastic insulation so I will only use it for a couple of seconds before I turn it off. I will also use no stronger than 5 amps for the same reason. I will also make sure that there is no bare insulation or any water near any electrical equipment. This will help to prevent electrocution.I am only going to change the number of coils in my experiment. This will help to keep it a fair test. I will also have to keep the current the same throughout and use the same paper clips in each experiment. I will also always use the same iron core and try to keep the coil equally spaced out. My prediction is that when more coils are added, the strength of the magnet will increase therefore it will be able to attract more paper clips. I believe this will happen because as more coils are wrapped around the core, the magnetic field will get stronger and stronger. When we have seen a link between the number of paperclips picked up and the number of coils then we will know that we have enough results. ResultsNo. of coils No. of paper clips 1st Go nd Go Current (amps)15

1.00 4 1.5 4 4 1.40 5 5 1.45 6 6 1.4AnalysisMy results showed that the more coils around the electro magnet then the more paperclips the magnet can pick up. This proves that my prediction was correct. We also used another set of results ranging from 10 to 00 coils. Here is the results tableNumber of turns Current (A) No. Of clips held10 .0 00 .0 00 .0 150 .0 70 .0 8100 .0 110 .0 14150 .0 1700 .0 As well as my results table, my graph also shows the relationship between the number of coils and the number of paperclips picked up. You can see a curve in the graph, as from 0-10 coils the electromagnet is not able to pick up any paperclips. The first few points on the graph are low numbers; 0,0,1,. This means that the beginning of the graph is not that steep. However after the fourth point the gradients gets steeper as the number of paperclips picked up goes from up to 8, a difference of 5 paperclips. After this the gradient continues to increase until it reaches its highest known result of paper clips. In the results of the experiment I did there is what I considered to be an odd result. Instead of holding paperclips the magnet held 4 on the second attempt. This was at 0 coils. If we did the experiment for longer then the results would most likely stay the same, as the number of clips held depends on the number of coils, therefore if you continue to increase the number of coils then the number of paperclips will continue to increase. In between my points there are gaps where I will guess how many paper clips have been picked up. For instance at 40 coils, I would guess that the number of paperclips picked up was . This is because at 0 there was 1 paper clip and at 50 there were . I would also guess that at 60 coils the number of paperclips would be about or . At 110 coils I would guess that 1 paperclips would have been picked up. The graph showing my results and the graph showing the results above are quite similar. They both go up fairly steeply and at about the same rate. Lauren Oswell Please note that this sample paper on How can you change the strength of an Electromagnet? is for your review only. Hello and my name is Abhishek Karmakar and I am 16 years old. I live in Shanghai and study in Shanghai American School. I am writing this letter to you about the banning of the book "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain. I have found out that the school board has banned the study of this book. I am not happy with this because I think this a wonderful book and should be encouraged to read all over the world. It is a book about American literature written in the late 1800's. The book takes place during the mid 1800's and it is widely discouraged by some people due to the racial content it exposes. Mark Twain himself worked around the Mississippi river. He probably wrote this book during his experience in the river, so probably everything in the book is what he reflected on. Lots of African-American people have been offended by this book. They have not understood the book or they have not read the whole book. The novel is about a boy named Huckleberry Finn who runs away from his father and travels down the Mississippi river. He meets a runaway black slave, Jim, on the way and they both travel together. In my opinion I think that this book is quite a good book. People say they are offended by the word "nigger" in this book. African-Americans read the first few chapters and then stop reading it. What these people don't understand is that Mark Twain had written this book a century ago. In that time it was normal for white people to call black people "niggers." Some critics also say that Mark Twain includes in this book some very rude and informal language. I think that this helps us students to really feel what life was like in those days, how people communicated, so in fact this is kind of a learning experience for me. It really shows me the way people communicated with each other and how the language has developed till today. I don't see why the school board or other people do not see this. A reporter states that "Eighth graders at New Haven's West Hills Middle School will not finish reading a great American novel this year." I think the school has done the right thing. I think we should study the novel but I don't think the school should teach the students as early as from grade eight. This is because I don't think the students are mature enough to read it at that time as a class. I think the novel should be taught at around grade ten and upwards. By this time the students will be mature enough and will be able to understand the book properly and not take it as a joke. Shalon Bradford, an African-American junior studying in Decatur High School says she was "excited" to read "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn." She stopped reading it after the first two chapters. Her reaction was, "it's filled with the N-word and other racist remarks." I totally agree with her, but she is looking at it at a different view. She said that "several students in her English class at Decatur High School snickered and laughed at the word." In this situation it is totally unacceptable for mature students to be laughing at these kinds of issues. They should be punished and taught lessons, because laughing at the word it just being very racist and they are showing it to the class as well. If the teacher doesn't take any action against it then the school board should consider talking to the teacher. Dave Matthews, Bradford's English teacher says that "he acknowledges that the book has a 'raw edge' and that some of the language is offensive, but he said the positive value far outweighs the negative," which is quite true and I support his view.

So I think the school board should definitely not ban the book, and instead maybe give a presentation about the positive parts of the book and how the olden days are different from nowadays. It is definitely a good book and should encourage every student to read and learn something new from it. The school board should also only allow grade 10 students or higher to read these books, because then the students will have some maturity towards the book and understand it, rather than letting grade 8's read it. If students laugh or make any bad comments about the book they should be punished or maybe even expelled because racism is a big issue these days and it shouldn't be taken lightly. I ask the school board to reconsider and allow the students to study the novel "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain.
