Salinger's works were Online essay help on jd salinger
generally written during two time periods. The first time period was during World War II, and the second time period was during the 1960's. Critics feel that the works during the 1960 time period were very inappropriate, because of the problems for which he wrote. The main characters were generally misfits of society. In most of his works, he has the protagonist of the story go on a quest for happiness. Salinger does not conform to the material happiness; the characters undergo a spiritual happiness. The characters generally start out as in bad conditions, through the end of his works they undergone changes that change them for the better. The works of J.D. Salinger show the quest for happiness through religion, loneliness, and symbolism. Salinger's works often use religion in order to portray comfort. In Salinger's Nine Stories Franny Glass keeps reciting the "Jesus Prayer" to cope with the suicide of her brother Seymour (Bloom in Bryfonski and Senick 69). Salinger is able to use this prayer as a means of comfort for Franny. The prayer stands for the last hope for Franny in this situation. Franny would be lost if their was no prayer. (Bryfonski and Senick 71). Salinger shows us comfort in Catcher in the Rye. Holden Caufield, the protagonist, is very much in despair for losing his girlfriend, so Caufield reads a passage in the Bible. This helps Holden change his outlook on life (Salzberg 75). Holden was all alone at this point and had no one to turn back on, until he found the Bible (Salzberg 76). In both stories the characters had found themselves in bad situations. The characters in these works have obstacles which they must overcome in order to achieve happiness (Salzman 34). Happiness is the very substance which all of these characters are striving for in Salinger's works. Salinger uses religion in his works to comfort them so that they can proceed on their quest to achieve happiness. Salinger uses religion as a means for liberation. Salinger uses much of the Zen philosophy, as in the case of Nine Stories, to achieve this liberation (Madsen 93). In Nine Stories one of the characters, Seymour Glass, is portrayed as Buddha in the sense that he wants to be liberated as Buddha was in his life (Madsen 93). Seymour Glass in Nine Stories has a certain philosophy about life, it is similar to the Eightfold Path used by Buddha when achieving nirvana (French in Matuz 212). Seymour Glass is on a quest to become free from all of the suffering in his life as Buddha was from his life (French in Matuz 213). Seymour follows the Eightfold path to become liberated from suffering (Madsen 96). Seymour achieves "nirvana" by living a good life and end anything that causes suffering. Seymour is able to attain nirvana by committing suicide (Lundquist in Matuz 211). Salinger shows us that when Seymour committed suicide he let go of all of the suffering that he encountered, thus attaining the happiness he longed for (French, Salinger Revisited 132). Salinger shows liberation as an end to all suffering, thus creating happiness for the character. (French, Salinger Revisited 133). The final function of religion as a means to attain happiness was to gain peace In "The Young Lion," Salinger uses religion to gain peace through a fictitious war. In the story many of the soldiers were dying and the countries were in turmoil (Lundquist 312). The leaders in the story see a vision on the battlefield that changes them, and stops the war (Lundquist 315). Salinger shows how religion can be a force used to create happiness in a story, by creating peace (Lundquist 313). Salinger is able to use religion as a means of attaining happiness through peace. The story seemed very dismal, until religion intervened and stopped the conflict. Salinger creates happiness for the characters by stopping the conflict. In "The Stranger" Salinger creates peace through a war by using more of the Zen philosophy. Salinger's creates a "Pact of Peace" which stops the conflict between the Germans and Polish during WWII (Hamilton in Bryfonski and Senick 143) . The "Pact of Peace" was a teaching used by Buddha in the Zen philosophy (Hamilton in ryfonski and Senick 143). Salinger uses Zen, in this case, to stop the conflict between the Polish and Germans(Hamilton in Bryfonski and Senick 143). In many of Salinger's works the conflict, becomes a source for much of the unhappiness in the story (Wenke 212). Salinger uses religion as a medium to create tranquility, consequently the characters to achieve happiness (Wenke 215). In many of Salinger's works loneliness is used to isolate characters from evil. Salinger portrays all of society to be bad, and for many character's isolation from society is the only way to achieve happiness (Grunwald 103). In Salinger's Catcher in the Rye Holden Caufield's entire plot deals with him trying to isolate from society. Holden realizes that society has become bad, and wants no part in this terrible life (French, Salinger Revisited 192). Salinger uses society as the source of discord in this case to be isolated from. Holden is shown as a hermit at the end of Catcher in the Rye (Grunwald 68). Grunwald explains "Holden's tranquillity, at the end, can be ascribed to his isolation from society" (68). Holden only wants to be separated from the society which considers him a misfit. In Salinger's works a source of unhappiness is usually the fact that society feels the characters are misfits. The characters canonly become happy if they isolate themselves from this society. Salinger uses loneliness also as a means to change in life. In "Raise the Roof Beam High," Salinger is able to use isolation to change the life of Seymour Glass (Salzman 130). Seymour feels that society has become corrupt and must change his lifestyle in order for him to become happy (Salzman 134). Seymour sees that society has no more compassion on people, and that he must do something to change it (Salzman 136). In order for him to change society he must first isolate from society (Salzman 140). Salinger uses loneliness again to benefit mankind. Salinger in this case makes a person change his lifestyle to isolate from society (Salzman 132). The benefits of this action are good not only for the person who has changed, but also help parts of society which are affected (Salzman 132). Loneliness in Salinger's works benefits the character's greatly. Salinger is able to isolate the characters in his works in order for them to attain happiness (Grunwald 265). Salinger describes Seymour as "A recluse, who will never be part of society" (Grunwald 260). He shows that Seymour wants nothing of this world and wants to be as far away as possible. The characters see that society has become bad, and in order for them to become happy they must get away from society, andlive their own lives. 1.0 IntroductionThe Segway Human Transporter (HT) is a unique two wheel, self balancing locomotion device. It was designed to allow humans to move more quickly, cover more distance, and carry more than they could by walking. The manufacturer asserts that the Segway can go anywhere one can safely walk. The maximum speed a Segway can travel is 1.5 mph, which is about times the average walking speed. The Segway Mobility Evaluation was initiated with the concept that if the Segway could provide convenience for the everyday person, perhaps it is versatile enough to enhance the tasks of military personnel. Military personnel are often presented with situations that deem the use of full sized military vehicles inconvenient or even impossible, yet it would be advantageous to have use of a device that would provide for greater versatility than walking. With its small size and its capability for speed, the Segway appears to be such a device. However, military personnel are often situated on surfaces and terrains that pose a greater challenge to maneuvering over than the average person faces. The paths can be rough, scattered with obstacles, and may include a variety of surface irregularities. Hence, it was necessary to determine if the Segway HT would still provide convenience if placed in an environment that is rougher and less predictable than the environments it was designed for. .0 Summary of Test Plan
College papers on Segway Mobility Evaluation
In order to obtain performance results that would be meaningful to the military, it was important to conform the Segway testing to a set military standard. The NATO Reference Mobility Model II (NRMMII) is a series of algorithms used by the US Army and other North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries to compute the maximum velocity of a specific vehicle over a specific terrain. It is a comprehensive program that computes the maximum possible speed of the vehicle for a variety of different variables including tire pressure, tire type, ground terrain, and obstacles. The variables applicable to the Segway testing included tire type, terrain type, surface roughness, and obstacles. Other things to note are battery life, dismounts, weather conditions, damage to Segway, and rider comfort. .1 Terrain CategorizationThe NRMMII specifies 8 different terrain types primary road, secondary road, sand soil on trail, other soil on trail, operation in snow on trail, sand off-road, other soil off-road, and snow off-road. Given physical limitations, snow was unavailable for use at the time of testing. Additionally, the other soil on trail and other soil off-road categories were omitted because of obscurity of definition and limited terrain type in the designated test area (Seaside, SSC San Diego). Self-Imposed definitions of the terrain types allowed testing of the other four types within the limited testing area. Primary road is defined as any maintained paved road. Secondary road is defined as un-maintained paved road or maintained gravel road. Sand soil on trail is characterized as compacted sand that does not show significant ruts upon Segway crossing. Uncompacted (loose, uncompressed) sand located off trail is designated as sand off-road.. Surface RoughnessThe term surface roughness is used here to describe the relative quantity of surface irregularities in the terrain. In this experiment, a quantitative estimate of roughness was obtained by laying a yardstick flat on the terrain and measuring the difference in height between the yardstick and two lowest points (to the nearest ¼ inch). This was repeated along the entire length of the test course and the values were then averaged and the standard deviation computed. The average value was then placed into one of five predetermined ranges 0-., 0-.5, 0-1, 0-1.5, or 0-, inches. For each terrain type, two or three distinct areas were found each of which fell into a different range of roughness.. ObstaclesFor testing purposes, an obstacle was defined as an object at a height greater than or equal to .75 inches that impedes the motion of the Segway. Obstacles encountered in nature include rocks and vegetation. Additionally, other varieties of objects may be stumbled upon on maintained roads. Since obstacles vary greatly in size, shape, and location, it would be difficult to obtain informative results by performing tests on geographical obstacles. Hence, to evaluate the Segway's performance over obstacles, a set of model obstacles was created for testing purposes. The obstacles consisted stacking several x 4 pieces of lumber and a 0.75 inch thick sheet of plywood in various combinations to attain different heights. Additional pieces were added until the Segway was no longer able clear the obstacle. .4 Tire TypeFor the initial testing, three different tires were tested. The standard Segway HT tires (the tires that come with the Segway), the Segway HT enhanced traction tires, and Dunlop D7 dirt bike tires. Since the Segway tires are tubeless, in order to use the Dunlop D7 tires, it was necessary to modify the Segway rims by drilling a hole through the plastic to accommodate a tire inner tube (size x 14 inches). The Dunlop tires are mini bike tires of size 14 0/100, while the tires designed to be used with a Segway are 14 65/100. In order to install the Dunlop tires, the Segway fenders had to be removed. As a safety precaution, new fenders were fabricated using Segway e-series bag mounting brackets and slightly alternating their shape to accommodate the Dunlop tire. The onboard software of the Segway was not updated from the original configuration to accommodate the larger tires..5 Experiment Set UpBefore testing could begin, it was necessary to explore the testing area for assorted terrain types and roughnesses. Regions were sketched out and marked on a map of the Seaside division of SSC San Diego (appendix VI). The course length for each test varied from 0 feet to 7 feet. The boundaries were marked off with cones and two pieces of rope to facilitate timing. For the testing of the Segway over obstacles, the plywood was arranged in such a way that it wouldn't shift during testing (see photo). The course length for obstacles was set at inches (7.67 feet). .6 Testing ProceduresThe Segway was driven over the surface roughness course length three times in each direction. Time was recorded using a stop watch with accuracy of 1/100 of a second. The 6 obtained times were then averaged and an average speed computed. Similarly, for obstacle testing, the tester rode the Segway over the obstacle course times in succession and time was recorded. The obstacle course consisted of a 7.67 foot long track with the obstacle in the center of the course. For obstacle testing, given that there was often be multiple attempts before passing over the obstacle, the actual distance covered varied from test to test (depending on how many runs it took to overcome the obstacle). Although "speed" is technically defined as the change in distance over the change in time, for comparative purposes and to simplify data analysis, "speed" was freely defined to be the course length (displacement) divided by the total time it takes to complete the test. Melissa's Diary!!Thursday 0th NovemberHi diary! I know you've been lying around since last Christmas collecting dust but I thought you were just a useless gift from Aunt Betty. Sorry, but can you blame me when the year before she got me a pack of coat-hanger covers? Ha! Bless her.The thing is, this morning I had a really big problem and I couldn't tell Mum because it was SO embarrassing! I was getting ready for school when I realised I'd started my first period. Hunting through my cupboard to find the introductory pads Mum bought me when I was nine years old (why I'll never know!); I came across you my diary. Who better to tell my problems to than you! I was suddenly thanking Aunt Betty in my head and wishing I'd have been more grateful after she gave me a stripy green book ( I was secretly wishing for the latest Brad Pitt movie to drool over, so I was a little shocked and disappointed! )
Now I've got my first problem off my chest, I can think of a thousand more. Boys have it easy not having the stress of what us girls carry with us every day!Like the other day, for example, I was walking home from my friend's house when I saw the boy of my dreams Liam. I have had a crush on him since year seven and have had so many embarrassing moments in front of him. I walked all the other way round the block home to avoid another embarrassing encounter with him and was grounded by my Mum for being late! Now that is totally unfair! But I'd rather have this punishment than the encounter, so I consider myself to be let off lightly.Saturday nd DecemberThe next door neighbour was poking his nose over the fence into our garden today. Don't know why. He has long hair and scares me; he looks like the sort of man that would dress up as a woman at weekends. I ran outside, took my bra (yeah it's a training bra so what!) and knickers off the line and ran back in again. He then went back in. Hmm.Remember to keep an eye on the weird next door neighbour guy.Monday 4th DecemberMum let me off with my grounding after a day, (think I got her wrapped around my little finger which is useful! Ha ha!). She said I'd taken it well as I'd agreed to polish and dust my room, good job she never checked behind the television. Parents are so stupid! After today though I wish I was grounded because I can't face leaving the house for at least a year! I thought today was turning out to be perfect when Liam actually made eye contact with me and started talking to me! Ok, so he only told me I had a leaf stuck to my shoe (slight embarrassment) but he must have been looking which is great. As casually as I could, I picked off the leaf and gave him a flirty look. Suddenly, this big snowball flew across towards me and landed on the side of my head! OH MY GOD! I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me. The worst thing was that Liam could not stop laughing! His laugh isn't that cute when it's me getting laughed at! I am never going back to school; they will have to drag me there.Wednesday 6th DecemberTargets for the day Attack that HUGE spot on my nose (I look like a cross between Pinocchio and Rudolph!) Do an experiment on weird neighbour guy, maybe buy new flashy knickers and hang them out while he's around. Stop chewing my pencil as I daydream about becoming a famous singer where Liam falls totally in love with me and buys me flowers and chocolates every day and… oh my god! I'm doing it again!Mum's just come in and distracted my thoughts - good job really. "Your tea is ready Melissa, are you coming down dear? "Yeah Mum, two seconds ok?" "Do not be long then because it will be going cold. Well you must be hungry; I can see you have already started eating your pencil. You really must not do that dear. You will get lead poisoning", she said in her Mother knows best voice. And with that, she left the room. Looked in the mirror and saw I had a bit of pencil hanging off my lip.Saturday th DecemberThank God it's the weekend and only 16 days till Christmas! Yeah! Not thanking the person who thought of snowballs of course. Hmm, need to wash my hair, it smells funny. Maybe of my dog, I was laid beside him today. Never mind.Mum asked me to go to the cross-stitch club with her today (she goes on weekends), she is such a nerd.Well, brain is empty today. Keep thinking of candy floss for some strange reason… must mention a trip to the seaside to Mum.Monday 11th DecemberI told Mum about starting my period yesterday. She must have told Dad when I asked her not to because he tried to have the talk about 'the birds and the bees' with me today! I said to him 'Dad! I am fourteen and a half years old so stop treating me like a kid! We do learn sex education at school!' I actually think he was a bit embarrassed because he patted me on the head and walked away. I feel kind of bad for him now so might go and see if he wants a cup of coffee and some choccie biscuits in a minute. Besides, I've got to stay in their good books!Mum said she was too busy to be going to the seaside anytime soon so may have to sweeten her up too. Hmm, I know she hates housework. Forget that, so do I. Guess it's no trip for me.Thursday 15th DecemberPut my Christmas album on today to get in the mood and was grooving round my bedroom, Dad walked in as I was belting out jingle bells into my hairbrush! I was just about to hit the high note at the end! Why me? Always making a fool of myself!Anyway, gonna get my hair cut tonight and have it curly tomorrow for school like Jennifer Lopez wore it last night on the music awards on TV. Liam LOVES Jennifer Lopez. Maybe if I go for this look he'll be the one after me (In dream world again)!Me and Dad went out last night for a meal, he decided he wanted to spend some quality father, daughter time together. At first I was just thinking 'I hope to god no-one sees me or I will die', but he was pretty cool. We talked about things I'd talk to my friends about! Shocking I know! Dad's not so embarrassing after all.Friday 16th DecemberMy life is over! Got the Jennifer Lopez hair and I looked like a poodle! After hours of calming it down with hairspray and stamping my feet on the bathroom floor, I went to school feeling slightly better. Finally built up the courage to stroll into the hall at dinner as casually as I could and there was Liam kissing the most popular girl from the year above! I was so busy staring in disbelief that I walked into the tray stand and knocked all the trays flying! I felt so stupid and didn't know what to do so I just ran out as fast as I could and went to the toilet to cry. I'm in my room now looking at my photo of Liam still crying. I hate him. This is the worst day of my life!Monday 1th DecemberOH MY GOD! This new guy has started at our school today, he's called Josh! How cute is that name? But not as cute as his voice he's from London! He's in the year above and is way better than Liam. I can't believe I thought I liked him. I am SO over him.Remember Must pick out best outfit from wardrobe to look glam for Josh tomorrow. Must try and sort this frizzy mop out. He'll never go out with me when I look like Pat Butcher. Buy breath mints. Please note that this sample paper on Melissa's Diary is for your review only. "Juno is a strong woman, a survivor, but she is no heroine"The dictionary definition of the word 'heroine' is "a woman with the attributes of a hero". The literary definition of a heroine is "leading female character in a play, novel etc", but readers and audiences expect more from their heroines. Connotations of the word suggest strength, self-sacrifice and victory. We also expect our heroines to understand more than those around her, with this in mind; I would contend that Juno is indeed the heroine of the play. In this essay I hope to explore Juno's character and illustrate precisely why I disagree with the stimulus quotation. Throughout "Juno and the Paycock", Juno is linked to the Virgin Mary. The Virgin Mary is an archetypal mother figure. O Casey likens Juno to the Virgin Mary especially with reference to her relationship with Johnny; the link is strengthened when, at the end of the play, Johnny is murdered, just like the Virgin Mary's son.

Additionally O Casey gives Juno the same name as the Roman goddess, wife of Jupiter, King of the gods. Throughout the entire play, she battles against poverty, ignorance, laziness, deceit all to keep her family from disintegrating. Juno has a subconscious grasp of what is important, which is in total contrast to other philosophies, at one point Johnny claims "I'd do it agen ma; for a principle's a principle." To which Juno replies "You lost your best principle, me boy, when you lost your arm". Juno's outlook on life is ultimately more important than the others. She is not lost in principles, like her children, or in fantasies, like her husband. She acknowledges whats going on in the world around her. Her realistic attitude exposes the shambles of nationalism and patriotism in Ireland in the 10s. However, Juno has two main weaknesses. One is her reaction to Robbie Tancred's death. She is dismissive, has a callous attitude, she even partly blames Mrs Tancred. "In wan way, she deserves all she got". She seems rather selfish in her reaction which modern audiences will find odd, as apart from this, Juno is a very caring woman. I think O Casey makes Juno condemn Robbie at the beginning to show how she has changed at the end of the play. Furthermore, I think O Casey uses Robbie's death to show how he deplores the idea of killing. Both Robbie and Johnny are Die-hards, but O Casey balances their deaths with the death of Mrs Manning's (a neighbour) son, who is a Free-State soldier. In balancing these deaths, it is obvious that he is not in favour of the actions on either side of the argument. Instead, O Casey concentrates on showing the reader or audience, how entire families can disintegrate all " over a few words included within the Treaty", these are O Casey's own words. Jack Boyle, her husband, is another main weakness. She lets Jack throw his weight around. Boyle is the cause of a lot of Juno's stress. The fact that he doesn't contribute to the income does not prevent him from drinking away their money. The scenario is so bad that Juno is forced to become the main breadwinner so the family can survive. Not only is Juno the breadwinner but has also brought up her two children almost single-handedly. This is made clear in Act where Juno says, "your fatherly care never throubled the poor girl" It takes a very strong woman to take on all that responsibility. Juno is also the financial, emotional and religious support throughout the whole play. Juno endures a lazy, drunken husband, a dependant son and a daughter who is on strike. She is quite aware of her responsibilities, "I don't know what any o' yous ud do without your ma". However, she complains but she doesn't actually do anything about it. Although there is not much to admire in being pushed around, modern audiences must realise that it wasn't easy for women to leave their husbands in the early 0th century. When Juno is first introduced we are told, "Were circumstances favourable, she would probably have been a handsome, active and clever woman". One of the major misfortunes outlined in "Juno and the Paycock" is that many people cannot escape form the social class they were born into; the Boyle family could not escape poverty, even Mary who was more educated than the rest,"two forces are working in her mind,-one, though the circumstances of her life, pulling her back; the other, through the influence of books she has read, pushing her forward", "Juno and the Paycock", Introduction From the start of the play, the odds are stacked against her, the most dominant of these being poverty. As tension between Juno and Jack is eased when they think they have money, it becomes clearer to the reader that poverty is the cause of much of the bitterness between them. Juno's attitude to Boyle is tense and agitated at first because of his unwillingness to work. I think this changes when they hear news of the Will because they believe there is no need to worry about money. O Casey highlights this in Act 1 when we hear Juno say "You won't have to trouble about a job for a while, Jack" At the moment when she realises Jack is destined to be a lazy drunk for the rest of his life, this is the climax of the play, "I've done all I could an' it was no use-he'll be hopeless till the end of his days." Up until this point Juno has had faith in Jack, not only has she had looked after her children, but also her husband. She seems to have believed that one day Jack would grow up and get a job. She now acknowledges that this isn't going to happen and that her responsibility now lies with Mary and the unborn child. "Juno and the Paycock" is a tragedy. A tragedy usually features the downfall of great people, but in this play it is the downfall of a poverty-stricken tenement family. In tragedies, another main factor is that the hero contributes to their own downfall, the hero or heroine then understands or learns from their mistakes just before the end. In "Juno and the Paycock", Juno has to go through a tremendous loss before the end, but there is a glimmer of hope that Juno has learned something. Juno learns to stand up and say no, especially to Jack. She loses many things to learn the consequences of violence, importance of sympathy and that you have to give up on some people. In conclusion I feel that Juno is definitely a heroine. Given the circumstances, I doubt many people would be able to show the signs of self-sacrifice, bravery and strength that she shows throughout the entire play, through thick and thin. Her ability to shoulder all responsibility with just a few words of complaint is to be much admired. Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale founded the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in October 166, in Oakland, California. The name was later shortened to the Black Panther Party. Stokely Carmicheal, the leader of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) who had some of the same views as the Panthers also joined the Party. Their main goals were to end police brutality, and strengthen Black communities through organization and education although many other people were against them. Like the F.B.I.. The problem was J. Edgar Hoover who opposed the Panthers' policies. As he was the director of the FBI, and got the Bureau involved with his own views. he wanted to make America safer (Katsiaficas & Cleaver). While he was destroying the Black Panther Party for the safety of white Americans, which was thought to be his intention, he was destroying the lives of black Americans. In October 166, the Black Panther Party made their rules and regulations known to everyone. They were called The Ten-Point Platform. The main points of the platform stated that the African Americans should be able to choose their own destiny, and that every man should be employed by the government in order to maintain financial support for himself and his family. The final objective stated that no black man should serve in any military branch. The Panthers refused to fight for a government that they felt did not treat them as full citizens of the United States of America (Katsiaficas & Cleaver). recruited into the army at that time were African American. This was thought by the Panthers to be unlawful. This would reduce the military number of men drastically. The Black Panther Party may have seemed like they were revolting against America, but were only doing what they felt was right. A major difference between the Black Panther Party and other black nationalist groups of that time can be seen in the plan for a communist America. To the Panthers, the mother country was America, not Africa. They felt like they belonged in America, but were being held down by racial biases' of their opposing authorities. One of the fundamental areas in which the Black Panther Party contributed to the Black Liberation Movement, was self-defense of other blacks (The Amercans-Reconstruction through the 0th Century). The Panthers preached armed revolt. They also adopted one of Mao Tse Tung, the leader of the Chinese Communist revolution's slogans "Power flows out of the barrel of a gun" (The Amercans-Reconstruction through the 0th Century). This is what separated the Black Panther Party from other black organizations because the other groups did not take action to the extent that the Panthers did. In the 160s, the Black Panthers used guns for self defense and not senseless violence like they were labeled for . The reason for this label was because of the frequent shoot outs between the Panthers and the police. They carried guns around like wallets to protect any black person that was being mistreated as well as to protect themselves from police brutality that occurred often. The Black Panther Party knew that if used right, it could give them a page huge advantage over their enemies, which could prevent them from being labeled as a violent group of people. The only reason the Panthers were so violent was because they felt there was no other alternative. They saw that African American had been so discriminated against not only recently, but through out history so they decided to take forceful action. A fundamental thing that attracted blacks to join and support the Black Panther Party was its policy of doing something for the people. The Black Panther Party organized community programs such as free breakfast for children, school for kids, clothes drives, campaigns to stop drugs and crime and more (black history.eb.com). The Panthers tried to make the country understand that it wanted to make America a safer, better place. The Party found ways to spread their messages and ideas across to the citizens of America with such media as its newspaper, The Black Panther, mass rallies, speaking tours, slogans, posters, leaflets, cartoons, buttons, symbols like the fist, graffiti, political trials, and even funerals (black history.eb.com). The Black Panther Party even had enough power to spread its ideas on television and the radio. The main idea the Black Panther Party had to spread was that, We were human, we were ready for equality, we were equal to whites, disproving racist ideas held by whites. (Freed) Some blacks decided to do a little research about themselves and their history. Some famous musicians used phrases such as Free your mind and your ass will follow (George Clinton), and Say it loud, Im Black and Im proud (James Brown), to express themselves in the Black Liberation Movement. Some page 4disapproved of the Partys methods though. The Black Panther's main person was J. Edgar Hoover, according to him, the Black Panther Party was, the number one threat to the internal security of the nation. (Hoover). The FBI then labeled the Black Panther's as black racists. (Freed). Hoover really disliked the Black Panther Party. The FBI also went after people who supported the Black Panther Party. Eventually, the FBI raided Panther Headquarters around the country in places such as Des Moines, Iowa; Detroit, Michigan; Chicago, Illinois; Indianapolis, Indiana; San Diego and Sacramento, California; as well as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Katsiaficas & Cleaver). This caused a big decline in the party's support. This all led to the beginning of the end of the Black Panther Party and everything they had done for black people. However, the Panthers were ultimately unable to live down the negative label by government forces due to the many oppositions and opinions within society. After J. Edgar Hoover issued the order to neutralize members of the Panthers. In combination with police executions of dozens, and the arrests of hundreds of Panther's from across the country eventually spelled out the demise of the Party. They were taken out because of their threat to the government. They were a threat with their violent ways and their strong following which was building up before all this happened. Luckily the Panthers made a lasting impression on the nature of not only black nationalism and civil rights, but they helped create and motivate thousands of young, lower-class citizens to stand up for their human rights page 5while helping to redefine the New America. This was the first step toward racial equality, which still has not been reached today, but now it is inevitable that one day all races on earth will be created equal.
