Langston Hughes leans heavily on simile to illustrate his thoughts on mid 0th century Harlem that, while terse, evoke vivid mental pictures to warn the future. He details a less known side of people and everyday life in Harlem. The reference to "Raisin in the sun" in the second line was 'borrowed' as the title of a renowned play about the hopelessness of the situation of black people in the mid-0th century. A raisin starts out as a grape, full of juice and potential and sweetness. Grapes are often tied to images of fruitfulness and the Christian Bible, which many black slaves were taught as the word of God, a grape being the fruit of the vine- the vine being the Church, or Christ. A raisin is a grape separated from the vine and left out in the hot sun to dry. A raisin is dried out, and while it can be eaten, its juice is gone and it is shriveled remain of what it once was. This is a way of showing how neglect has caused the dream and the town of Harlem to shrivel and become old and almost useless. A grape also becomes darker and more concentrated in the process of becoming a raisin, and it becomes something "else". It is a static image and you feel the stillness of a non-moving raisin, a dried up thing. "Does it fester like a sore?" This line slowly brings action into the poem, because although the sore is not going anyplace, there is a kind of infection within, a growing of ugly things like pus. What is growing is not a pleasant thing, but it is growing because of neglect.

"And then run?" The movement is intensified slightly and by degrees as the festering and the growth of the corruption is oozing out of its sore and erupting out on the skin. These words indicate 'coming out'. "Does it stink like rotten meat?" Hughes tantalizes us with gross images of rotting, deteriorating things. He shows that neglect does not have a lack of affect to match its lack of care. Something happens- the neglected thing rots, festers, and dries out. "Or crust and sugar over like a syrupy sweet?" This might be the counterpoint simile, going from putrifying and dead things to something that is so sweet that it is also disgusting. The counterpoint argument also is meant to show the ridiculousness. We have been "conditioned" by the first horrible similes and so we see the sweetness of which he speaks as also a disgusting thing in this context. In the final line of the poem, Hughes leaves the reader with the question, Or does it explode? This is a question [about] whether or not the dream still exists. I think that Hughes wants us to believe that the dream can live on and still flourish. Hughes lists several possible fates for the dream, but ends with the question. In the natural progression of the poem, this indicates to me that the dream is expanding, not exploding into nothingness. The final line of the poem offers a sentiment of encouragement to oppose the despair of the preceding phrases. Hughes suggests that as long as you dont forget about your true dreams, they will live on forever, no matter what hopelessness encompasses you. It is stated in the final line of Harlem, that a dream may explode. Most would see this as a negative event, meaning (that) your dreams would be shattered into bits and pieces, never to be restored. I feel, (however,) that this particular phrase is positive and encouraging (towards reaching your dream.) I see the word explode as referring to leaving an impact, just as a bomb leaves an impact on what it comes in contact with. Therefore, the memory of the dream is still there--its very visible. AdamSpittle rains from an ever-condemning mouth, rage flamed cheeks are echoed by eyes so contaminated with anger that I can see the blood pumping through near exploding veins. I could laugh out loud at he comical element of this face, resembling an angry cartoon character, eyes bulging complemented by steam billowing from its ears. "Why you!" the pissed off Elma Fudd accuses me the naughty Bugs Bunny. Yes, I could almost laugh if the constant fear of this woman, my mother striking me doesn't constantly corrode my mind everytime she begins to yell and I turn to reals of cartoons like warped Nickelodeons for comfort. Oh, but this time she swears its for real "your going to live with your Father". Yes, ok Mum how about I throw this empty threat back into the basket containing all the classics gathering dust, my favourite being " you'll never amount to anything you lazy good-for-nothing bastard". "You call your Father" she interrupts, " and the you get back in that room and pack your bags". All 6ft of me stare at this woman whose cold eyes still nibble at my nerve.Cassandra"Ah, monotonous Sundays" I breathe lazily as I roll over my brain churning slightly at last night consumption of alcohol. Drifting easily out of consciousness it is the shrill call of the phone that slams me against the bricks of reality. Snapping the charade Dad answers, grumpily mumbling "It'll be one of your friends". I turn my head from this remark, and catch snatches of the distant conversation, "Don't cry mate, I'll take some time off work and come up". It all becomes disjointed mumbling… Dads voice tremors as he wakes me the residue of tears slurring his speech, "your Mothers kicked your brother out of home".

AdamI hate her,I fucking hate herThese oily patches of anger rise in the water of my thoughts as I shove memories of my present life into a duffle bag. "How dare she lock me in my room" I scream indignantly to the shedding wall s of my prison. Collapsing onto the bed I think of how great freedom will be. She comes crashing in, leaving the door humming on the hinges, "I've decided that your not going, your father isn't a good enough parent". My outrage bubbles at this last mind-fuck. "I want to go" "well your fucking not" the finality in her voice asserts control and seals my caged fate.Cassandra" I'm scared" I confess to dad as we near Mums four bedroom fortress. "She cant do anything there are no custody papers and he wants to come". Dad calmly soothes my ruffled nerves. Oh, yes I too still flinch at the memory of my mother, years after breaking free from the circle of abuse. " I hope to hell that she is working," I say slicing the tension. "Yeah, me too". Dads' voice is determined but his trembling hands deceive him.AdamWhere are they? My nerves create the feeling that a pack of butterflies on speed have been released, stirring my stomach. Again the question, it sets me on the edge of paranoia. Blood rushing adrenal glands releasing a potent mixture urging my limbs to run like hell. My heart thumps in my ears, I wonder if she can hear it if she suspects anything. I glance sideways at her face constantly changing colours in the televisions reflection, blue, green, red this suits her best.CassandraI wait in the car, my palms rubbing in anticipation, feeling like a kidnapper caught in the spotlight of the moon. I watch Dads long figure approach the door leaves swept aside in the storm of parental determination. I hear the door slam followed by a wave of fierce words, which rock the car. Shoving my head between my knees, I clamp my hands over my ears and brace for impact.Dad Speeding, swerving down the road my hands slides round the wheel leaving trails of sweat. In the reflection of the rear vision mirror I see my daughter and son embrace, cheek to cheek, the tears of their joyful reunion mingling coating each other's cheeks. Red dots approach in the mirror, sirens signal their mothers' intent. But for the moment that does not matter, all that does is the embrace bonded by shared torment and the elation lighting my face knowing that my children are safe. Emily Bronte's life was not a happy one. She never really knew her mother, she never had any close friends, and she never married. Her tragic life contributed to her one and only novel, Wuthering Heights. This book is a romance, filled with tragedy and revenge. So what kind of life did she have that inspired such a morbid story? Emily Jane Bronte was born on July 0th, 1818, to Reverend Patrick and Maria Bronte. She was the 5th of 6 children. Her mother died when she was just three years old. (Biography…1) Because of this, Emily was prone to writing stories with motherless characters. (Barker 1) After her mother's death, their strict Calvinist Aunt Branwell moved in to help take care of them. When she was six years old, her father sent her and her sister Charlotte to the Clergy Daughter's School, where their older sisters Maria and Elizabeth were already enrolled. This school was "run with the intention of punishing the pupils' bodies that their souls might be saved." (Biography…1) They were punished by being kept hungry, cold, tired, and ill. (Biography…1) A year after being sent there, a typhoid epidemic spread throughout the school. Maria and Elizabeth fell ill with tuberculosis and both died. The father hurried to the school in June of 185 to take his remaining daughters home. (Vine 1) In 186, Emily, Charlotte, sister Anne, and brother Branwell made up a fantasy world named Gondal. They wrote stories, plays, histories, and poetry about this make believe world. For Emily, the adventures of Gondal "coexisted on almost an equal level of importance and reality with the lonely and mundane world of household chores and walks on the moor." (Biography…1) Emily very rarely spent time away from home. (Biography…1) In 185, Charlotte took Emily to a school called Roe Head, where Charlotte was teaching at the time. After less than three months there, she became very pale and thin. Charlotte thought she would die if she did not go home, so she sent Emily back home. (Vine 1) She tried other jobs away from home. In 187, she tried to be a governess, and in 184, she tried teaching at a school in Brussels. Both times she missed her home very much and returned as soon as she could. (Barker 1) Emily never really fit in anywhere outside of her home, and, being shy and reserved, never made any close friends. (Biography…1)

In 1846, Charlotte found some Gondal poems Emily had written in secret. She wanted to have them published, but Emily refused. It turns out that Anne and Charlotte had been writing poems in secret, also, so they decided to publish a collection of their poetry. Using their pseudonyms, they called it Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. It only sold two copies, but that didn't stop the girls from continuing to write. In 1846, Emily wrote Wuthering Heights and had it published under the pseudonym Ellis Bell. The book wasn't widely accepted until after her death in 1848. She used the pseudonym because she wanted to remain anonymous at all costs. After Emily's death, however, Charlotte finally disclosed their real identities in her book, Biographical Notice of Ellis and Acton Bell. (Vine 1) Their brother Branwell died in 1848. While attending his funeral, Emily caught tuberculosis. She refused any medical assistance, and finally died on December 1, 1848. (Vine 1) Before her death, she had been working on a second novel. After she died, Charlotte destroyed the manuscript, fearing it would hurt Emily's reputation. Juliet Barker says this about Charlotte's action "In my opinion, Charlotte should've minded her own business." (Barker 1) Emily Bronte's life was a tragic one. But it helped her write Wuthering Heights, one of the great classics. This also helped her become one of the giants of English literature. She is now considered the genius of the Bronte sisters. sonnet 10What is the tone of the poemshakespeare one of the greatest poets of english literature wrote sonnets which deal with mundane affairs. his sonnets were a symbol of cruel reality. sonnet 10 is also a similar poem.My Mistress' Eyes Are Nothing Like the Sun" is a poem written by William Shakespeare about the love towards an imperfect woman. He explains that although his mistress is imperfect, he finds his love special and "rare." If the modern day reader is not careful, he/she might be quick to assume the role of the woman that Shakespeare writes about. Although the word mistress now refers to a sweetheart or a woman who lives with a man without being married to him, in Shakespeare's time, it meant a woman who rules others or has control. With that understood, the reader can focus on some important conventions of this poem- theme, tone, and form- to better understand and appreciate the piece.

The theme of this poem is to reflect and understand true love; true love is loving one another's imperfections. This poem explains the imperfections and even flaws of the writer's love. He speaks of her eyes being "nothing like the sun", her lips not as red as coral, her breasts an off-white color, her cheeks less red than roses, and her voice not as pleasant as music. He even becomes a bit insulting when he points out that her hairs are like black wires, her breath reeks, and that she treads on the ground when she walks. But despite all these things, he still loves "to hear her speak" and finds his love rare, recognizable by heaven. The tone of this poem is one of realism and contentment. Shakespeare realizes that love is full of imperfections, yet that only makes love stronger. This is a realistic look at his mistress, not a usual love-stuck reflection in a poem of one's love. He has come to realize that she is far from perfect, yet that does not take away from his love for her. It seems as though he is having an epiphany about the truth of love. Maybe he is a young lover, who is coming to terms with the facts and reflecting in a realistic manner. Although he speaks of all of her shortcomings, he sounds satisfied with his love. This poem's form is that of a sonnet. William Shakespeare is famous for his use with sonnets, and truly perfected the art of sonnet creation. "My Mistress' Eyes Are Nothing Like the Sun" contains fourteen lines with ten syllables per line, and follows Shakespeare's renound iambic pentameter meter scheme. In each line, there are five accents of sound, following the iambic pentameter. This form gives the poem a beautiful rhythm, similar to all of Shakespeare's masterpieces. This poem is a realistic look at the love of the writer. Shakespeare uses his mistress to explain true love and it's imperfections. He uses tone to set a content and realistic mood. Through his form, he creates an easy, flowing, and enjoyable read, displaying his superiority in the art of poetry.in this poem shakespeare has petrpyed the negative as well as a realistic aspect of his beloved. here he compares her with things that he has a strange kind of confidence in his lover. yhe doesnt want to falsify emotions. instead he wants her to experience the cruel reality. thats why the poem is a symbol of harsh realism.shakespeare has described every aspects of her with great sincerity. all her shortcomings are declared with truth but every passionately. he didnt exaggerate any of his lovers aspects to falsify her. instead he expressed his love conviniently. he says that his lovers eyes are not as rediant as the sun, her lips are less red than the coral, her breasts are tanned or less white than the snow. her hairs are like wires, her cheeks are not as rosy as damask rose. the best perfumes had more fragnance than her. her voice is also a bit sordid. she also walks clumsy.in fine we can say that the represente da sense of reality. the poet is not overwhelmed with the realistic appearence. so the poem ha spresented before us a realistic tone. The Cambodian GenocideThe Cambodian genocide is one of the most horrible and saddest genocide to date spanning form 175-178. As Cambodia gained there independence from France in 15 the country was controlled by prince Sihnaouk. In February of 16 America started to bomb Cambodia in secret. After a year of bombing a small time communist party the Khmer Rouge, started demonstrations in the large cities such as phon-phen. At that time the prince of Shanouk was visiting Paris, a pro-American general by the name of Lon Nol overthrew Sihanouk and joined the communist party of the Khmer rouge. War had struck Cambodia at this point. In April 170 Vietnamese and American troops invaded southeast Cambodia in the look for the Vietcong guerilla fighter in the rainforests of Cambodia. Lon Nol was proven to be not a well skilled military and political leader. Corruption worsened and Cambodians started believing that the country would be better of with the Khmer rouge and past prince sihnaouk. During that time the Khmer rouge was gaining power and falling away form their Vietnamese allies. Soon the Khmer rouge overthrew the over Lon Nol as he fled form the city April 1, 175. On April 17 the first Khmer troops entered the capital with their leader Pol Pot. They were welcomed with cheers and white flags. This was the start of the Cambodian genocide. As Pol Pot realized his power now he immediately started his Khmer society. He started his society on an eight point program in his program he began the process of taking away all liberties of the people. He started to evacuate all people from all towns, abolish all markets, abolish currency, make monks grow rice, execute leaders of the Lon Nol regime, establish cooperatives throughout the country, dispose of the Vietnamese minority, and dispatch troops to the border mainly near Vietnam. as the Cambodian people were taken from their towns each person was told to write their last occupation so the Khmer could execute enemies and any intelligence that threatened them. Pol Pot wanted to make Cambodia a self-sufficient communist state and as make their revolution a pure one. Soon all printed material, private property, religion. And travel was forbidden. The people of Cambodia became totally black clothed slaves as the country was toiled with a wall of landmines surrounding the whole country. The men and women were separated and all put into the workforce digging canals, harvesting rice, as the children tended gardens. The workers were used from dawn to dusk even sometimes till the late hours of the night. Since the Khmer rouge had discarded of doctors and hospitals, treating the sick was done by untrained party officials or the way their ancestors had don it. This caused a great plague of death. From 177 to 178 the workforce had been severely cut by disease and malnutrition. Enemies of the state were sent to prisons and executed. The most famous of prisons was s-1 in the capital city of Phnom Penh. Prisoners were photographed on arrival at the prison and then tortured until they confessed their crime and then were executed. The country could no longer control itself. Failure was upon them and they needed someone else to blame. The Khmer Rouge approached Vietnam as their new enemy. In early 177 Khmer raided Vietnamese territory and in late 177 heavy fighting broke out. The war was horrendous and Pol Pot was convinced that his army was infiltrated by spies from Vietnam. on Christmas day 178 0.00 Vietnamese and 18,000 dissident Cambodians battled along the border against 7,000 of the Khmer rouge. Phon Phen was recaptured in two weeks and the reaming army of the Khmer rouge fled to mountains to continue the fighting. The Cambodians before had ever-lasting hate toward the Vietnamese but now hailed them as saviors. During the Cambodian genocide 1.7 million people (0% of the population) lost their lives. This genocide could have maybe been prevent if the French had stayed in power but maybe not, history can not be taken back.
