Faulkner's use of characterization plays an extremely important role in his short story, "A Rose for Emily". It is clear to the readers that Miss Emily Grierson is the protagonist or the principle character. Emily is a gothic character. That is because of the fact that she slept with a skeleton of her lover Homer Barron for forty years. She was awfully stubborn in the opinion of the townspeople. This stubbornness also ties into Emily's ability to live in reality. After she refused to pay her taxes, directly to the mayor, she tells them to go see Colonel Satoris , who has been dead for ten years. This portrays Emilys illusion of reality was greatly distorted. Miss Emily was motivated by her lover, Homer, she isolated herself in an old decaying house and she refused to recognize that time had passed. Emily was proud, disdainful and seemingly independent. This shows the importance of characterization. Without these characters, the story would be radically changed. When the reader understands Emily, they can achieve a clearer view of the actions that go on during the story. Several other characters in "A Rose for Emily" are set in opposition to exemplify the reader's feelings about certain characters and the tribulations they experience. Another prime example of Faulkner's effective writing is his use of narration. Of course, in most stories the narrator not only as a story teller, but as an observer from the crowd as well. The narrator's point of view, which is in third person, has a positive effect on the way a reader views the story. Through the story the narrator uses "we" instead of I revealing to us the way the townspeople judge Emily. The narrator thinks back in time throughout the story remembering particular events that occurred in the past. This is important to the reader in that it helps aid in the understanding of how the townspeople viewed Emily. The narrator as one of the townspeople had been narrated by anyone else; it may not have been easy for the reader to completely understand. With this spectacular as the narrator, describing the events of the story through his eyes, one can detect a general impression of Emily. The view of the narrator is beneficial in understanding the things that Emily goes through. Also toward the end of the story the narrator gives the reader a feeling of sorrow and pity for Emily. It is apparent Faulkner's use of narration is critical to the enhancement and clarification of "The Rose for Emily". After analyzing the narrator it was made clear that one of the townspeople was the narrator. The narrator could not have been better than someone from the town who had a birds eye view of Miss Emily's life.

Another example of Faulkner's unpredicted style is his use of foreshadowing. By using this technique, Faulkner forces the reader to notice or feel the intensity of the feelings and sights given off by the story. An artistic nature is vividly exhibited by the use of foreshadowing. A prime example of Faulkner's artistic ability is the character Homer Barron, who is Miss Emily's lover. Homer is causally mentioned at first and seems to have little or no significance to the story's direct meaning. However after looking back over the story, the reader can see that Homer did display a important role in the theme of the story. The theme of Emily being unhappy and basically leading a sheltered life foreshadows that Faulkner bring across that it was wrong for the townspeople to gossip and assume things about Emily. By using Homer as the antagonist, one can see that because he had disagreed with Emily and was going to let Emily down as her father. Her unhappiness had driven him to commit murder. Faulkner also used the mood as a foreshadowing tool. "A Rose for Emily" may seem dependant on its climax of shock, however, is largely justified by the theme of the story-given this theme, there can be no way of realizing it, except through shock. The type of foreshadowing that Faulkner represents the past and present generations and how they are progressed in the story, Miss Emily still represented and for the beliefs of the Old South while the New South generation stood back and allowed her to bask in her illusions. One final example of Faulkner's intellectual writing is his ability to incorporate symbolism into his writing. In "A Rose for Emily" Miss Emily actually symbolized a remembrance of values and sins of the persevere relic of the South's antebellum past. Miss Emily was definitely a complex character in that her character stood for the beliefs that she believed from the Old South. In the title, "A Rose for Emily" many have ask "What does the Rose stand for?" I feel as though "the rose" is a symbol of the age of romance in which the aristocracy was obsessed with delusions of grandeur, pure women being a symbol of the ideal in every phase of life. In other words, the story is in a way, a rose to Miss Emily standing up for the things she believed and died believing them. Other characters also symbolized other things in the story. Colonel Satori, the old negro servant, and the older generation of the Board of Alderman symbolized the Old South. The unnamed narrator, the new generation of the Board of Alderman, and the attitude of Homer Barron toward the Grieson's and the Old South symbolized the feelings of the New South. Most people will agree that Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily" has an effect on those who read it.

In conclusion an entire novel could be written from this single short story due to the fact that it had so many components intertwined within. Through the use of characterization, narration, foreshadowing, and symbolism, the reader will gather a clearer understanding of the point that Faulkner is trying to get across. The point that Faulkner is making is gossip is not always true, and that no one should attempt to base the truth on rumors, rather than the facts. Finally, the effect of "A Rose for Emily" is and will continue to be a definite success in the works of Faulkner. The story has been enjoyed by many readers and sure to be enjoyed by many others who will read it in future generations yet to come. The human body and mind are amazing things. While correctly carried-out functions take place every day, they can occasionally go off track. This can be caused by several different factors. Both genetics and environment play a part in the development of autism.

Autism is a brain function disorder that appears in early life ( infancy to three years old ) ( WebMd para. 1 ). An autistic child lives in a world all of his own. He avoids eye to eye contact, dislikes cuddles or other warm approaches, and does not relate to the outside normal world by speech. Commonly, repetitive movements or habits develop ( Oppenheim p. - 11 ). The cause of this repetitive and narrow behavior is unknown ( Doman p. 187 ). Some autistic children recover from their illness, while others carry it with them throughout their lifetime ( West and Dodds p. 15 ).

Autistic traits continue into adulthood, but each case varies in severity. Some adults with autism function well on their own. Others never develop the basic daily living skills and may be diagnosed incorrectly with a variety of psychiatric illnesses ( WebMD para. ).

Autism belongs to a family of brain conditions affecting the behavior in early life. Physicians refer to autism and these other related conditions as pervasive developmental disorder ( WebMD para ).

While autism is an illness that occurs in young children, the cause is not exactly known. From various studies on the disease, scientists have agreed that autism is a factor of the child's genetics, environment, or both.

Autism can run in families. If a child has autism, each of his parents' later children has an 8% to % chance of being born with autism. This is one hundred to two hundred times greater than the chance of someone in the general population developing the disease. When Autism runs in families, the reason can be environment ( nurture ) and/or heredity ( nature ) ( WebMD para. 4 5 ).

Studies of twins provide the clearest view into the importance of genes and environment. Researchers evaluated forty -five pairs of twins. Within these pairs, at least one of the twins had autism. Of the twenty-five pairs of identical twins, % ( twenty-three out of twenty-five ), both children had autism. Of the twenty pairs of non-identical twins, 10% ( two out of twenty ), both twins had the disease (WebMD paras. 7 10 ).

If autism were only a component of genes, every set of identical twins would contain two autistic children since identical twins carry the same genes. Sine the pairs or not both autistic or both non-autistic, this shows autism deals with environment ( WebMD para. 7 ). This study of family clearly shows both factors of genetics and the child's environment play a part in the development

of autism.

Researchers have not found the exact individual genes that contribute to autism. However, they have made preliminary scans of the entire genome. This led to the finding of several candidate areas. These areas are the long arms of chromosomes two, seven, and thirteen and the short arms of chromosomes one, sixteen, and nineteen. These specific regions are being examined in further detail in ongoing studies ( WebMD para 11 ).

Estimations have been made that 5% to 14% people with the symptoms of autism have a separate, known genetic disorder such as Fragile X syndrome and Tuberous sclerosis. Although these are commonly associated disorders, it is not known how they cause the development of autism ( WebMD para. 1 14 ).

Autism can result from specific events, such as infection of the brain with the herpes virus and infection of the rubella virus in the pregnant mother, before or shortly after birth. Large-scale brain structure problems, such as hydrocephalus ( water on the brain ) and a rarely found brain tumor, are often associated with autism. These different things form part of the child's brain environment. From a study on vaccines, researchers concluded that there is no vaccine, which is a part of the child's medical environment, proven to cause autism ( WebMD paras. 15 17 ).

With the environmental factors, not all family members will necessarily have autism. Members of a family do not have the same height, weight, or appearance. They also do not have the same diseases and conditions ( WebMD para. 18 ).

There are environmental and genetic differences that explain the differences in one's appearance and health. Some family members will be exposed to environmental factors that trigger a certain disease while others will not. Some family members will inherit specific genes that regulate the development of autism while others will not ( WebMD para. 1 ). A person will develop autism due to their individual environments and genetics.

New discoveries about DNA and genes in autism can help in two major ways. For someone to diagnose autism, he needs specific training as well as sufficient experience with the disease. Presently, there are no special tests than can confirm or exclude the diagnosis of autism. Further discoveries dealing with DNA could lead to a certain gene testing for the disease. This would help parents to be able to understand what is happening to their child and why the child acts in such bizarre manners. Also, this would help to accelerate the pace of research on autism ( WebMD para. 1 )

There are many mysteries involved in autism. Knowing exactly what happens to the brain of autistic people is the biggest of all. To pinpoint the biological roots of the disease, the exact identification of genes is necessary. This identification of genes would allow the design of treatments to assist children with the disease as well as aide in the foundation of possible methods for the prevention of autism ( WebMD para. 0 ).

Autism is studied as in depth as possible for the time being. Further investigations could find the exact genes or environmental factors that cause autism.

Autism can be a result of heredity or one's environment. Different cases can result from one or both factors. Autism can run from generation to generation, or start as a random first generation disease. People with autism require more care, but give the surrounding normal people and family members a better sense of the luck they had in receiving their own life ( Catalano p. 65 67). With extensive investigation into the development of autism, the disease can be diagnosed and treated properly. Treatment may lesson the symptoms and help autistic people function better ( "Autism" para. 10 ). If given the chance, one who is introduced to a person with autism should indulge in giving as much affection and attention that would be positively received. Making this special person smile and feel more attached to others could make a big difference, at least from the autistic person's point of view, which really is all that matters.

True Team WorkThere are many different pieces or facets that make up a successful team. In the world of business and education, teams and teamwork are becoming more prominent, but we have been surrounded by it for centuries in the idea of team sports. With the ever-changing chemistry of team members and coaching staff, especially when we think of the professional team, there is no such thing as a perfect team. And what works for one team may not work for another team. The eternal role of communication is therefore a crucial element in the preservation of the team. Thus, the success of the team is contingent on the quality of the communication. Communication is key to all activities in life and functioning with other people. Communication is defined in the Webster Dictionary as the exchange of information by means of speaking, writing or using a common system of signs or behavior. If we do not communicate then it is very difficult to perform our jobs no matter the industry. The forms of communication vary, but the bottom line is that there is communication. People communicate verbally, by writing, sign language, music, body language and facial expressions. A successful team has at least one of these forms of communication, if not more. In Phil Jackson's book, Sacred Hoops, he reminisces about his early years with the Chicago Bulls. The team was having a problem because they relied too much on Michael Jordan to score, rebound and steal the ball. Once teams figured that out it became the Bull's weakness. The question then was, "How to open up the offense and make the other players more productive?..." (Jackson, 84). Early on Phil Jackson told his staff about "Red Holzman's [adage] that the sign of a great player was not how much he scored, but how much he lifted his teammates performance"(Jackson, 84). Michael Jordan was moved from shooting guard to point guard. As the point guard the hope was that Michael could spend more time creating scoring opportunities for his teammates rather than his teammates relying on him to score all the points. This idea's success was short lived and eventually collapsed because it did not have communication from all members of the team. The next season, for the Bulls, Tex Winter was brought onto the scene. He is the mastermind of the triangle offense. The embodiment of the triangle was the integration of "mind and body, sport and spirit in a practical, down to earth form that anyone could learn. It was awareness in action" (Jackson, 87). The triangle is a system of out thinking the opponent and "moving in unison as a group and being acutely aware, at any given moment, of what is happening on the floor"(Jackson, 87). The triangle system is an example of quality communication in the form of physical and verbal communication. If done correctly, it is almost impossible to stop because there are no set plays and therefore no predictions on the part of the opponent (Jackson, 87). The reason this is a strong example of quality communication is two-fold. The team wasn't working as a team and the leaders realized that weakness. By definition, a team is made up of more than one person. A team is dependent on all of its members, not just one, to be successful. Each member of the team has a purpose and if there is a breakdown in communication then the team will not be successful.

Essay writing services for True Team Work papers

In the business world, if the manager does not communicate to the team members his expectations of each of them and fully define their individual roles on the team, then there is no team. Just like for the Bulls, they knew where they were and they knew what they were trying to accomplish. They started by communicating the problem and then laying out the potential solutions. By working as a team and each member doing their part they became a very successful team. Imagine a team as a car; one cannot drive the car if it is missing one or more parts, such as the tires or the engine; just as the team is dependent on the communication and the strengths of all the team members to function successfully. A team requires a strong leader. "A leader is uniquely unselfish. He or she is often the most talented member of the team, but uses his or her talents for the benefit of the team. But a leader cannot do it alone"(Ferguson, 5-5). Leadership is a crucial element in the performance of the team. The type of leadership and the quality of communication can make or break the team. The leader sets the tone and keeps the team focused on the task at hand. The leader cannot do it all, so the responsibilities are broken up into smaller tasks or projects. Each task or project has just as much bearing on the success of the team and the project as the end product. Because, without the smaller tasks being accomplished and done well, the quality of the work contributes to the success or non-success of the project as a whole. Therefore, if the work lacks quality it hinders the success of the team. The leader is responsible for matching the task to the appropriate team member and the member's skill level. Failure to do this will result in a breakdown of the team and its communication. The successful outcome of a team is dependent on the quality of the communication. As in all interactions between people and groups of people, communication is essential. It is even more essential when people must work together towards a common goal. The Chicago Bulls are an example of team work. A true team cannot have members that function independently to be successful. A true team utilizes the strengths of each member to achieve a common goal. Each member's contribution to the team is essential for the team to achieve success. Without the contributions of each team member and communication, there is no team. Work CitedFerguson, Howard E. The Women that Influenced Ernest Hemingway's Writing Ernest Hemingway was born on July 1, 18 at his grandfather's home in Oak Park, Chicago. He was the oldest male of six children. With such a large family, Ed and Grace Hemingway ran a strict household, but they did allow their children to enjoy themselves. Ernest loved the outdoors. Him and his father found themselves at Bear Lake many times throughout the early years of Ernest's life, but as he got older, Ernest became more of a ladies man. Ernest was married four times and rejected once by an older woman. These five women were the reason for most of Ernest Hemingway's literature. (Hulse) In 1, Ernest Hemingway wrote "his first major commercial success," A Farewell to Arms (Flora 180). This novel is about a wounded World War I soldier that had an affair with his nurse. Hemingway wrote this novel eleven years after meeting his first true love, Agnes Von Kurowsky. Hemingway fell in love with Agnes while he was under her care at the Milan Red Cross hospital. Despite the fact that they saw each other everyday, Agnes wrote Hemingway daily. She called him "'Kid' and herself 'Mrs. Kid' and kept a picture of him in her pocket," (Hulse 10). Agnes did like Hemingway, but she did not let herself fall in love with him because she was committed to nursing and she felt as if the "'wartime' romance would not last," (Hulse 10). When Agnes left Milan, they wrote each other three or four times a day, but when they reunited, Agnes "persuaded Hemingway to return to his home," (Hulse 11). She had made him believe that in two years they would get married, but then she sent him a "rejection letter," (Hulse 11). Because of all of these events, Hemingway wrote Three Stories and Ten Poems, a series of stories about the love and rejection of his first true love. In 11, Ernest Hemingway married Elizabeth Hadley Richardson. The couple shortly moved to Paris to look for work. They sent letters home telling their families about the lovely place that they were living in, but in reality, it was small and not very clean. Hemingway decided to start writing. The couple lived off of Hadley's trust fund; this allowed them to travel too. Hemingway focused some of his literature on their trips to other countries, for instance, The Sun Also Rise focuses on his and Hadleys' trip to Spain. He also wrote The Torrents of Spring, another piece about their traveling adventures together. By the time Hemingway's first son was born, he was a full time author. Hemingway's marriage to Hadley did not last but five years. He had an affair with an editor named Pauline Pfeiffer. Hemingway was remorseful for what he had done, so he dedicated The Sun Also Rises to Hadley and his son, John. "It was, he said, the least he could do," (Hulse 14). This was Hemingway's first affair, but little did he know that he would have quit a few during his lifetime. (Stephens).

By the end of 17, Hemingway was divorced from Hadley and remarried to Pauline Pfeiffer. They had two children together, but Hemingway continued to travel. After he got back from his honeymoon, Hemingway became extremely depressed. He felt as if he could not write anymore. During this time period his father died from a self inflicted gunshot wound. Because of his depression, Hemingway isolated himself from his new family, and met another woman by the name of Martha Gelhorn, a journalist. They went to Spain together, but he had not yet separated from his wife, Pauline. Three years after meeting Martha, Pauline and Ernest separated. Hemingway was overwhelmed with guilt from treating his wife so horribly, that he wrote To Have and Have Not, a story of loneliness. He did not dedicate this novel to her, but it was written about her. (Stephens 116) On November 1, 140 Hemingway divorced Pauline and married Martha. The two had plans to cover several wars. One war was the Spanish Civil War. Hemingway wrote two pieces of literature from the experience that he and Martha shared The Fifth Column and For Whom the Bell Tolls (Hulse 17). Martha and Ernest liked to follow the battles that were going on around the world, but he had a problem being married to a working woman that was curious as to what was happening in the world. He wrote Travels with Myself and Another to express his feelings about Martha's curiosity. According to Kert, "Ernest had no prior experience with a wife who led a life independent of his, he would try to adjust, at least for the present," (4). Hemingway ended up in London in 144, where he met a woman by the name of Mary Welsh. By January, his marriage to Martha was over and Hemingway was starting over with a new soon to be wife. (Flora) Like the times before, Hemingway fell into a state of depression because of the guilt that he had felt for leaving his previous families. He drank too much and had his third car accident, but to make things better, he married Mary Welsh on March 14, 146. During the time of their marriage, Pauline Pfieffer, his mother, and his publisher all died, so instead of writing about his new wife, he wrote about death. He wrote Death in the Afternoon and started many other pieces of literature. He did not get another divorce, but he did fall in love again to Adriana Ivancich. Due to this fling Across the River and Into the Trees was written. From this point on, Hemingway wrote about past experiences, such as Moveable Feast, a story about Paris in the twenties, since he was too sick to experience new ones. (Kert) Many people influenced Ernest Hemingway's writing during his life, but his lovers were his biggest influence. Hemingway did not stay in love long, but he fell in love many times. This might not have been good for the women in his life, but it is good for his audiences, because of his divorces, marriages, rejections, and flings, Hemingway is a well-known author that will always be remembered. Since we may not ever prove how the human race came to be we may only provide educated hypothesis. Charles Darwin's theory of evolution provided a description involving micro-organisms that eventually evolved into apes then to humans by natural selection. While religions such as Christianity provided a theory through the bible consisting of God creating the universe in seven days. This included Adam and Eve, the first species of humans. Science and Religion are conflicting instances since science began to develop ideas that contrasted religious ideals. Due to early science involving religion, several hypothesizes intertwined science and religion; therefore, several philosophers insisted on the creation of man entirely up to God.Evolution, a process by which Charles Darwin proposed natural selection, leads to reductive materials of moral philosophy. Charles's theory of evolution consisted of survival of the fittest or the adapted organisms survive over organisms that do not adapt to surroundings environments. Darwin's theory of evolution

Organic life sprung from non-organic matter through evolution,Original Life evolved into complex life forms through a natural process of random mutations. The basic premise is that matter acting on matter with a sufficient period of time can create anything either organic or non-organic.Organic life may have sprung from a single organism through macro-evolution,Complex life forms evolve through random mutations due to surrounding environment, Environment acting on matter with an infinite period of time may create a new species,Due to fossil records there is non-sufficient evidence of species evolving from mutations to create adapted organisms.Natural selection has provided an explanation of how species came from a simple one-celled molecule. Over a period of billions of years species have evolved into complex organisms due to survival of the fittest. The highly adapted organisms survived years by positively adapting to changing environments. Several species adapted to the middle of the survival spectrum adapting to two different harsh environments. Evolution of a species takes years to become a perfected organism. Since organisms adapted to their surrounding environments natural selection proves that organisms came from less complicated species. Darwin philosophically came to this conclusion by observation. He proceeded to state that organisms came from macro-evolution, then by natural selection and evolution to create the complex organisms of today. Due to Darwin's observational status, non-religious views, and lack of evidence, there are several criticisms of the theory of evolution by natural selection.Evolution, a theoretical process based on observation, has a lack of evidence pertaining to its conclusion. Since natural selection conflicts with religion, Christianity criticized the scientific theory of evolution carefully. Lack of evidence is the main factor pertaining to this evolutionary theory. Assumptions of mutations is an educated hypothesis, but according to fossil records there should be more transitional forms of fossils showing mutations evolving over billions of years. Theories of observation are discouraged in philosophical text. Since the creation of the earth is unknown how may one conclude that non-organic material was the beginning of all organisms. Such a simple organism evolved into complex organism. There is no evidence of how this activity occurred. A simple organism may stay a simple organism due to its inability to convert because of its simplicity. Random mutations occur due to what nature, how do organisms adapt with such ease, and why doesn't the human race keep evolving. Surrounding environments of the present are ever-changing, because of the different variations of the world's atmosphere. To be an adaptive organism, species must change positively to survive in any given environment. When simple cells were first developed, the brain power would have to develop into a thinking species containing the items to survive. A developin species needs a constant environment for a period of years, then as a gradual weather change occurs, the their chance for adaptation and survival will be greater compared to a rapid environment change. Fossil records provide evidence that there was an adaptive change. Not enough evidence is shown to prove the theory of evolution. Fossil records show complete specimens instead of fossil showing gradual changes over a period of years. Since the argument provides insufficient evidence and material, especially since religion was not included.Theory of evolution is an educated theory that gives a valid explanation how the world might have came to be. But the world consists of religion, so the world may have been created by a high being; for example, God. Even if the Lord above did not create the world in seven days, he created earth an provided an environment for an organism to evolve in.God created earth. God created the first simple micro-organism,God create the perfect environment for an organism to perform random mutations,God is responsible for the creation of all species,Since God created earth and the first non-complex organism,Darwin's theory of evolution was half correct,Darwin excluded God, then Darwin is wrong.God gave us the power to reason, so we developed through experience and learning. Darwin was right in certain instances but not involving religious point of views is where Darwin's theory of natural selection left an important aspect that angered religious leaders. So Darwin's theory may be wrong, since the reconstructed hypothesis intertwines religion and science.Several theories were introduced for the creation of the universe. Since Darwin's theory of natural selection is the most popular, his validity is among the highest of early philosophers. Darwin's theory lacked supportive evidence making it an assumption rather than pure fact. Because it was completely observational, several philosophical scientists agreed with the information stated.
