Chaucer's view of the clergy class is not as positive as his view of the ruling class. The only religious figure presently positively is the Parson. Page 11 reads "Rich in holy thoughts and works, he was a learned man, a cleric, who wished to preach Christ's gospel truly and teach parishioners devoutly. He was benign, wonderfully intelligent, extremely patient..." Chaucer's religious ideal is expressed through the parson. Chaucer described the Prioress as "Very much interested in etiquette. She was so kind and full of pity that she would week if she saw a dead or bleeding mouse." The monk loved hunting. He did not believe in learning, and spent more time hunting. The friar was described as "a licensed beggar, and a very gay man. He found husbands for many young women at his own expense. Well lived and intimate, and had more power than the parish priest, courteous and humbly helpful." The pardoner was amiable, "in his bag had a pillowcase which had served as a veil for our Lady; He has no beard, feigned with flattery and tricks…made monkeys of the parson and people" on page 15. The summoner was a friendly person. He controlled all young people of the diocese in his own way. He spoke only Latin, and knew philosophy well.In conclusion, Chaucer presents a very positive picture of the pilgrims in the ruling class, and Chaucer's religious ideal is expressed through the parson. The word "name" has many denotative meanings. One is a word by which a person, place, or thing is known. Another is a descriptive word or title. And then there's reputation, good or bad. Not only does the word "name" have many different meanings, but also names themselves have different meanings. I believe that a name is that person or thing and a description of the person's or thing's personality and being. There are many objects that everyone knows by the same name, such as a piece of paper. Everyone who speaks the English language knows it as paper. I've never seen anyone look at a sheet of paper and call it a marker or scissors. This is because we are taught since birth to call certain objects by certain names. Also as we grow, we learn about new objects and their names. By the time we mature, we expect everyone we communicate with to know these items by the same names as we know them. Of course, there are the effects of the slang and the lingo of the region or time that we must adapt to and/or learn. However, no matter what the circumstances or situation, a piece of paper will always be a piece of paper. Names are also a description of a person or thing. Native Americans practiced this ritual of naming people with a name that described them, such as Green Cloud, Running Wolf, and She Black of Heart. According to Louise Erdrich in her article "The Names of Women," these names were later transformed by the pilgrims into names such as Catherine and Marie. Even in today's society, people can tell a lot by a person's name. For example, the name Ernest is not very popular now and is what Erdrich would call a "bad name." She claims that just by hearing the name you can tell that Ernest is either a very strong, outspoken person or very shy. This is because we expect that with a "bad name," Ernest has to deal with ridicule all his life, which meant he had to either stand up for himself or try to ignore it. By standing up for himself, he would build himself into a strong, outspoken person; however, by attempting to ignore it, he would grow up to be weak and shy.

Names mean a lot of different things to different people, and our society and language forces us to depend on names. Names are what we know a person or item as or describes the person or object. Without names for people or objects, life wouldn't have any definition or identity and would basically be utterly confusing and dull. Thought and Action

The play "Hamlet" written by William Shakespeare is a revenge tragedy. The play illustrates how people have trouble balancing between thought and action. Throughout the play Hamlet illustrates this problem as do many other characters in the play.

"Observe my uncle. If his occulted guilt do not itself unkennel in one speech. It is a damned ghost that we have seen." (III ii 8) When Hamlet was told of his father's murder, he does nothing to pursue his death, because he is to busy thinking of how to get over it. Hamlet used the theory of the ghost being the devil so that he would not have to go through with the murder of his uncle, king Cladius. "A villain kills my father, and for that I, his sole son, do this same villain send to heaven." (III ii 76) Hamlet does this because he is scared of the consequences of taking action. Hamlet finds a way around taking action and decides to think over what he is planning to do.

When Hamlet finally decides to take action it is interfered by his thought process. "How now? A rat? Dead for ducat, dead!" (III iv 4) said Hamlet when he killed Polonius, whom he believed was his uncle, Cladius. When hamlet is drunken with vile thoughts of his uncle that are so cunning are drowned out by his emotions. After Hamlet killed Polonius he thought nothing of what he had done and doesn't see the consequences that await him. As Hamlet is on his way to England, he escapes his own death. Hamlet sends a letter to Cladius telling him that he is returning. In doing this Cladius and Laertes begin to think of was to take Hamlet's life.

Many other characters in the play also have the problem balancing between thought and action. In the beginning Cladius kills King Hamlet, who is also his brother by poisoning him. He then proceeded to marry Queen Gertrude, his brothers wife a month after King Hamlet's death. Cladius was to bust sleeping with people whom he shouldn't to realize that he was hurting Hamlet in the process. This leads to the downfall of Cladius. When Laertes hears of his father's murder and sees that Hamlet is responsible he kills Hamlet. Laertes does this to fast that he didn't stop to think if it was the right thing to do. Once he does realize it, it is too late and he blames his own faults on the king.

The characters in the play have no sense of thought and action. When there applied to a problem there is a good outcome, but individually thought and action works against their creator. The play illustrates this through the death of the major characters caused by their own actions.

The study of the human brain has been researched for thousands of years. As technologyprogressed it seemed only natural to try and replicate the thought process. A Neurophysiologist, Warren McCulloch, and a mathematician, Walter Pitts researched how neurons work in 14. They modeled a basic neuron by electrical circuits. This was considered the first step toward the simulation of the neural network. By definition, neural networks are relatively crude electronic models based on the neural structure of the brain. The questions that are being developed and answered are 1. How does the neurons/neural network work? . How are they being used? And more importantly, how efficient is the neural network? Theories concerning replicating the human brain formalized again in the 150's, when computers started becoming advanced. An engineer, Nathaniel Rochester from IBM research laboratories began the first effort to simulate a true neural network. Of course, with most first attempts, they fail. And that was the case with Rochester. But, as he continued in his research they became successful. In 15, Bernard Widrow and Marcian Hoff developed models called ADALINE and MADALINE. The names are acronyms for their use of Mulitple Adaptive LINear Elements. It's an adaptive filter that removes the echoes from phone lines. MADALINE was considered the first neural network to actually be the solution for a true problem. The neural network is still currently being used in some commercial businesses. Through the years, the success turned to fear and drew many concerns of the accountability of the machines thinking and resolving problems. Due to the excessive hype of uncertainty, much of the funding came to a halt. In 18, John Hopfield proposed to create valuable devices, by using neural networks. Since then several engineers and scientists have come from around the world to Neural Network conferences to discuss ideas, and engaged in targeting specific uses for the network. As progression took place engineers realized that the key to the neural networks lies in hardware development. Scientists came to the conclusion that in order to fully develop the networks the prototypes had to be removed from the labs for testing. Which required specialized chips. Companies began working on three types of neuro chips- digital, analog, and optical. Currently, the optical chip seems to be the most promising for the future.
