The everyday world contains people, stones, plants, and storms; so, a superior, or transcendent world, contains Forms. A Form exists in this other realm as a source of origin for every concept that exists in this world. As the human body comes into contact with ordinary things and happenings in this world by sight, hearing, touch and so on, so the human soul can get into non-sensible contact with the ideal and eternal objects of the transcendent world. Within the Platonic theory of knowledge, the Form serves as the archetype of everything in the visible world. The Forms are not physical, however they are not mental either. Their existence extends outside one's mind as more than just an idea. Because they are not physical, the senses cannot perceive them. Even though they are not mental, they can be grasped only by reason, which is not a tool of the senses but a tool of the mind. Despite the Forms interwoven involvement with the mind, it is important to realize that the Forms are part of an external reality and not concepts fabricated by some human intellect. Plato's line diagram divides knowledge into thought and objects. The Forms fall on the side of objects. At the bottom of his diagram is the visible world, which consists of shadows, images, and reflection. This, in Plato's opinion, is the lowest form of knowledge. Then there are the objects of the material world such as a banana or an earring. Next, is the intelligible world right under the Highest Forms, are the Forms of mathematics and science. The Good is the Highest Form and the source of all visible things. Plato asserts the Good is " the universal author of all things beautiful and right, parent of light and Lord of light in this world, and a source of truth and reason in the other." A Form is immutable and timeless. A change is always a change from something "A" to something else "B." A and B cannot themselves be things that change. For example, a frying piece of bacon can change from brown to black, but the color brown cannot become the color black. In addition, just as one cannot say that 5 used to be a square number, so one cannot say that courage is on the brink of becoming, or used to be, fearful of danger.
