Fake and Real The Difference In the Portrayal of Madness
A very controversial topic exists in regarding to Shakespeares Hamlet. Many of those that read Hamlet argue that Prince Hamlet was mad, his actions guided by his ill feelings and weak emotions. Had William Shakespeare been around to answer the question Was Hamlet mad, he would most likely answer that Hamlet, the product of his imagination and creativity, was portrayed in such light as to create this controversy on purpose. However, Hamlet is perfectly sane, guided indeed by his emotions and feelings, which are, in fact, very healthy. Hamlet was not crazy, and this can be shown by the real madness of the one that he loved, or, at least, seemed to--Ophelia, whose craziness, especially in her final hours is unmistakably obvious. The actual reason as to why the audience is easily convinced that Hamlet was sane while Ophelia was mad, is simple it is the brilliantly skillful way that Shakespeare portrays them that makes it clear, though not obvious, as to who is really the insane one. Hamlet, the young, strong, full of revenge prince is constantly talked about as insane. Most of the characters in the play Hamlet, except for Hamlets good friend Horatio and a few others believe that Hamlet has lost his marbles. Yet, there is no real evidence which convinces the audience of this--theres no facts, nothing other than the characters opinion of him. Hamlet commits certain acts which seem irrational and unexplainable to the antagonists in the play, however, to the audience, all of these acts are perfectly explainable and rational. This is because the audience knows the situation that Hamlet is in, having had his father murdered and his mother marrying the murderer of his father. The voiced opinions of the characters are what really clouds the audiences judgement. There are many instances of that. Polonius, for example, attributes Hamlets insanity to the disappointed love for Ophelia. His hypothesis, which he believes deeply and tries to convince the king and the queen of, is that Hamlet is insane without Ophelia. In fact, Polonius is the one who ordered his daughter to break off any relationship that she might have with Hamlet, believing that would drive Hamlet to frustration, anger, and eventually cause him to loose his wit. Poloniuss idea coincided well with the common at the time idea that frustrated love causes melancholy, which is, in itself, fairly close to madness. Shakespeare expresses this idea in many of his works, an example being the frustrated Romeo in Romeo and Juliet. Another instance where this occurs is when the king has a good reason to convince others of Hamlets insanity he suspects that Hamlet knows something about the murder of his father, and if Hamlet were to spread this around, people would believe him. However, if everyone was convinced of Hamlets madness, no one would believe him. This, the king expresses in his speech to Rosencrantz and Guildenstern in Act , Scene , lines 1 and I like him not, nor stands it safe with us…To let his madness range… . The only act in the play that Hamlet performs that can be called irrational is when he is in the queens chambers, having just killed Polonius. Alas, hes mad!, says the queen in Act , Scene 4, line 105, seeing Hamlet talking to something that isnt even there. However, Hamlets rational, sane acts by far outweigh the things that he has said and done that make him look as if hes crazy. There are some plots that he has devised that a madman would never be able to figure out. How would a madman that is planning to assassinate the king ever comprehend that if he kills the king while the king is praying, the king will go to heaven? How would a madman ever have the sense to wait for the right moment? Not only is Hamlet perfectly sane, but his insanity scheme is ingenious. Ophelia, on the other hand, performs certain acts which show the audience first hand that she is not in the right frame of mind. The audience is not told by any of the characters that Ophelia is mad. Shakespeare leaves it up to the audience to discover that her behavior is irrational. Thus, the audience is unmistakably convinced who is really missing a few screws. An example of Ophilias irrational behaviors is the scene with the queen. Here, theres more to Ophilias words and behavior than meets the eye. She thinks that she is delivering some kind of a message to the queen. Her speeches are long, making it seem like she is talking to the queen as one woman that has lost something special would to another. What she goes on to say, as the king enters, is of different subjects, hinting at different ideas, asking philosophical questions. She sings of flowers and of how cold her fathers grave is, giving an unmistakable impression that her sanity has followed her father into his grave. Ophelia was a pawn, nothing more, which was used by those that supposedly loved her for their own purposes. She was used by her father to drive Hamlet to madness, as he thought. Hamlet used her to convince Polonius and others that he was mad. Ophelia eventually looses both of these men, which is what drives her to insanity, possibly because the two biggest influences of her life have disappeared. This is how Shakespeare used madness to show the differences between Ophelia and Hamlet. He showed brilliantly and skillfully true insanity and faking. Hamlet had a very brilliant plot of avenging his father, which certainly worked, though, surely, Hamlet wasnt planning on so many deaths. The careful, skillful setup of the plot of this play truly expresses Shakespeares genius!

Individual perceptions and biasAccording to Encarta, a bias is a predisposition to address an issue or react to others in a certain way. It also means being persuaded to adhere to a certain belief. Bias and individual perceptions exist because relationships exist. A person should not be judged by his/her gender, age, race, and ethnicity. All these differences can impact the workplace environment and the organizational culture. Also according to Encarta, an individual perception is the process by which people select, organize, interpret, retrieve and respond to information from the world around them. Our personal experiences and how we were raised influence individual perceptions. Organizational bias can have a negative impact or performance, productivity, teamwork and morale and this can impact the work environment as a whole. Two people can see the same thing and interpret it differently. Our individual perceptions are influenced by our personal experiences and how we were raised and these perceptions can affect our decision-making process. filled out, an interview is done and during the hiring and evaluation process. I found three Internet articles regarding bias and individual perceptions in the workplace and how they can impact the overall job performance. Managing Gender Bias in the WorkplaceThe focus of this article is how a woman can cross the gender barrier. You have to believe in yourself and respect yourself and others in order to succeeded. This particular woman was about to start a job and a new position as a project manager for an aerospace company. She is one of the only two women in the department, with a staff of ten people reporting directly to her. The recruiter of the company warned her that it might be difficult for her new staff to adjust to a woman as a manager. She was decided to make it work, he had confidence in herself and a proactive approach on things. Her goal was to win the respect of others and stay focused. According to the article, there are six steps in order to find equality in the workplace q Be a situational leader q Win respect q Step out of your comfort zone q Let go of the need to be liked q Practice leadership and accountability q Learn to laugh Avoid Age Bias in the Workplace. The focus of this article is that age discrimination is a growing problem. According to Mrs. Alcorn, it is the fastest-growing category of complaints received by the Equal Employment Opportunities Commission (EEOC). According to their statistics, 17,405 age discrimination claims were received last year. In order to avoid age discrimination in the workplace, one will have to be aware of certain signs q If younger people are chosen for training programs. q Even with good reviews, one keep getting passed up for promotions q You get moved from your work is. q Talks about retirement q You get fired or laid off. Employees over 40 years of age have a legal recourse. There is an Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 167, which makes it illegal to discriminate against an employee or jobseeker because of age. In order to avoid age bias, the article states that one should maintain a good relationship with supervisors in order to keep open the communication channels, and to keep up to date with the necessary skills to perform your job. Reports of Workplace Bias on rise since September 11.The focus of this article the reports of Muslims, Middle Eastern and Arab Employees of workplace discrimination are rising many months after the Sept. 11 attacks. In a study for Workforce Development, about 0% of people say Arab Americans are the employees most likely to be treated unfairly in the workplace even more than the number who said that women or Hispanic workers were most likely to be treated unfairly. In order to avoid this, officials are encouraging employees to prevent and to report discrimination. According to Mr. Armour, in order to battle workplace bias, companies need to distribute harassment policies, provide training and establish a system for handling conflicts. ConclusionConflicts can arise due to incorrect perceptions of others and us. In other to avoid this, we have to create positive work relationships, have confidence and respect each other. We have to learn more about the principles of human relations, use encouragement and show respect for the other person's opinion. We have to learn that inside qualities are more important than outside qualities. According to Art Williams in his book Pushing Up People, " There's no place for prejudice in a successful business". People should be judged by their performance and standard of excellence and not by their gender, race, age or ethnicity. The main goal of a corporation should be to build a company with the best people you can find regardless of their individual characteristics.References1. Levi Strauss history the man and the companyLevi Strauss was born in January 18 in Buttenheim, Bavaria. In 1847, he sailed to America, then became an American citizen in 185 and set up a small dry goods house, which grew itself into a prosperous business over the following twenty years. In 187, Levi Strauss and tailor/inventor Jacob Davis receivd the patent for riveting mens pants. They began making copper riveted waist overalls (the old name for jeans) in San Francisco. In 180, numbers were first assigned to the products that were being manufactured. The number 501® was used to designate the famous copper-riveted overalls. In 10, Levi Strauss died at the age of 7. His nephews inherited the business.Koveralls, a one-piece play suit for children invented in 11, became the first product sold nationally. In the 10s, the Depression stroke and the demand for products declined.During World War II, U.S. soldiers wore their Levis® pants and jackets overseas, giving the products their first international exposure. In 154, a zippered version of the waist overalls was introduced. In 15, LS&CO. began exporting garments to Europe. And in 165, Levi Strauss International and Levi Strauss Far East were established, beginning the companys real expansion into Europe and Asia. The early 180s difficulties and the reorientation of the firm.In 180, after years of aggressive US growth, Levi Strauss & Co. suffered a major market setback. As baby boomers grew up and the teenage population declined, the US jeans market peaked at 55 million pairs and started a steady four-year decline. The cost of its acquisitions in sportswear especially, combined with their subsequent poor performances, forced the company to shut down 18 factories and to lay off 1,000 workers in the United States in 18 and 184.To invert the trend, they decided to increase marketing emphasis and to advertise for the one product that is unique to Levi Strauss & Co, the 501 jean. As Levis former president Thomas Tusher says, the Levis 501 jean is today probably the best-known article of clothing in the world. The 185 European Launderette spot with the song Grapevine boosted sales of 501 jeans in Europe by 800 percent. The first Original Levis® Stores were opened in Europe in 18, and in the US in 11. Today, there are over 1,000 Levis-only stores worldwide, and more are being planned. Recent locations include stores in South Africa, India, Russia, and Indonesia. In 186, LS&CO. introduced the Dockers® Brand in the United States, and in Europe in 14.In 15, LS&CO. launched a home page on the World Wide Web at www.levi.com. Yet, the late 10s are the symbol of Levis new difficulties. Indeed, after a peak of $7.1 billion in 16, sales dropped to $6. billion in 17 and to $6 billion last year.Levi Strauss Americas, a division of Levi Strauss & Co., decided in february 1 to close 11 out of its manufacturing plants in North America and to lay off about 5,00 people, means 0 percent of its work force. Moreover, Levis decided to give up selling its products on the Internet after 1 Christmas. The company had until then sold clothes at two sites, www.levi.com and www.dockers.com. But in 1, they found out that they could not afford running a world-class e-commerce business. Consequently, Levis pants will now be purchased online at jcpenney.com and macy.com, which belong to Levis two largest retailers.Levis managed in the past to recover from critical situations so we can expect that they will this time anew recover and continue to provide the whole world with their famous slacks. Second part Levis social investment in the 10s In 11, LS & CO. launched Project Change, an initiative designed to fight racism among those communities where the company operates. In 1, the Levi Strauss Foundation ceased funding the Boy Scouts because of their discrimination against homosexual leaders and members. In 1, LS & CO. became the first Fortune 500 company to offer full medical benefits to the unmarried partners among its employees. In 14, the Levi Strauss Foundation helped funding national Hispanic organizations which provide education and technical assistance for those people willing to become U.S. citizens in Texas and California. Levis image through advertising In 160, the word overalls was replaced by the word jeans in advertising. In 166, the company aired its first television commercial. In 171, the word Levis® on the Red Tab Device® became stitched in white with a capital L only; the E is changed to e. The renowned Levis® 501® Blues television advertising campaign was launched at the summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 184. LS & CO. was the official outfitter of the U.S. Olympic Team and of the Los Angeles Games staff. The 185 European Launderette spot with the song Grapevine proved the power of advertising it boosted sales of 501 jeans in Europe by 800 percent. In 186, the first in a series of innovative television commercials for the Levis® 501® jeans aired in Europe. Birds singing in the air, grass is beginning to regain its chlorophyll, lawn mowers echoing in the distance; these are the typical characteristics that are associated with the season of spring. It is also the beginning of spring training for major league players. In our household, there is an ultimatum; you're either a White Sox fan or a White Sox fan. Not much of a choice I thought; it even fits into the communist system of government, but over the years, I grew up to become a loyal fan of the good, old palehose. I could even remember my first exposure of America's pastime dating back to my infant years. Photos on my living room wall and in memorabilia books display a wide conglomeration of baby pictures in White Sox paraphernalia. Many relatives of mine say its is the cutest thing that they ever seen, but I think its pretty horrid. A baby wearing an oversized jersey of Minnie Minoso laying in a catcher's mit is the picture that my mother cherishes the most. She chooses to display that picture in the living room wall over my Little League champion picture. Instead of picturing my feats and accomplishments, she chooses to go with the "little Minnie" picture, as my family members would refer to it. Whenever I go past the picture, the thought conjures, why?I guess it's a mother thing. Mothers seem to have some type of telekinesis that can compute things such as false testimony or whenever trouble lurks. Most fathers play catch with their sons, go fishing at times, or maybe even teach some tricks of the trade that has been passed down from generation to generation. My father was not the typical father. I don't know if there is term to describe him. If there were a word to describe a person that is over fatherly, a picture of him would be next to that term. He would be there during my Little League games, dates with girls, anything that can be thought of. The worst thing was that he was my Little League coach. It may not sound as bad, but imagine having Bobby Knight as a coach and a father. The continuous pressure to be successful on the field and off the field was the only thing that my father preached during the season.

The game that is embedded in my memory is the game when I was six years old.My father told me that if I won the game, there would be a great surprise in the morning.Sure enough, I pitched a great game. Coming home later that evening, The thought of the "great surprise" culminated into my thoughts. I wonder what the surprise is, I thought for the whole night. Was it a new bike, a Nintendo that I coveted dearly, or was it just some kind of joke that my dad did to motivate me for the game? The anticipation was just so immense that evening that I could not sleep or drink. The next day came about when my dad woke me up at the crack of dawn. It was so early in the morning that I can see the paperboy delivering the papers on his bike. That was usually my measure of early. Being so weary from the night before, I lapsed from consciousness the "great surprise". I slowly rolled out of bed. As I walked out, I can hear my mother in the kitchen preparing breakfast. The sweet aroma of pancake mix, the sound of sausages frying in the pan made me hastily get ready for the day. Running down the stairs, I can see my father outside checking the car's oil. That usually detailed one thing, road trip. As I finished, my father told to hurry up and get ready. I thought, ready for what? Nonchalantly, I got into to the car and went with my father. On the way to my destination, my father tuned to a sports station. The pregame show was on. The announcers were Mac, Jerko, and Harry. Listening to their low tone, boring voices made me fall asleep. As I awoke to horns and to my father's stop and go driving, I can see in the distance, Comiskey Park. As my eyes got wider admiring the ballpark, I asked my father if that was our destination place. He told me, yes son; we're going to see the White Sox play today. As soon as I heard those words, I was ecstatic. It was like a kid in the toy store picking out a toy. Walking into this huge facility, I can see lots of advertisements, stands, morals of past White Sox players, and the best part, the batters were taking batting practice. I quickly ran towards the dugout hoping for an autograph. There were hoards of people crowding around with the same objective in mind. As I looked around for my father who was lagging behind, I noticed in the pressbox a sign with the insignia, WGN sports. Inside the box was Ken Harrelson. Watching him on TV was cool, but seeing him in person just blew my mind away. Focusing my attention on Ken Harrelson, kids around me started to act up. The thought came, why were they pushing? Sure enough, over in the distance, Robin Ventura was headed in my direction. I clenched for my ball and stuck it out hoping that he would notice. In desperation for an autograph, I looked up at my father like he would do something to get Robin Ventura's attention. As I was looking at my father, the ball slipped out of my hand. My first thought was darnit; I dropped the ball. As I looked on the ground for the ball, I noticed that Robin was signing a ball. In a blink of an eye, my goal was accomplished. As they would say in the military, mission accomplished. Please note that this sample paper on Reflective entry is for your review only. Margaret Atwood's "Pornography" Pornography, otherwise defined as vulgarity and obscenity, is an issue that has and will continue to call upon much debate. While there are many people who see pornography as degrading, sinful, and disgusting, there is also a large amount of people who see it as a turn on, a form of sexual expression, and entertainment. Webster's dictionary defined pornography as merely "the depiction of erotic behavior with pictures or writing intended to cause sexual excitement." Yet according to Margaret Atwood "pornography" meant women getting their nipples snipped off with garden shears, having meat hooks stuck into their vaginas, being disemboweled; little girls being raped; men being smashed to a pulp and forcibly sodomized. The cutting edge of pornography, as far as Atwood could see, was no longer simple old copulation, such as hanging from the chandelier or otherwise it was death, messy, explicit, and highly sadistic. However on the other hand, I disagree with Atwood's description of pornography. I view pornography as a pleasurable sexual experience for both partners. In no way do I associate it with having my nipples snipped off with garden shears. Atwood's point of view sounds more like cruel and unusual punishment to me rather than something that's supposed to be enjoyable. When I hear the word "pornography" automatically hardcore and soft porn come to mind, not having a meat hook shoved into my vagina. That is bodily harm, not a form of entertainment. I wouldn't even consider Atwood's interpretation of porn nearly close to hardcore porn. Her idea of porn is way beyond that in my opinion. Atwood's idea of porn to me is more like a form of abuse, in no way pleasurable. Hardcore porn is basically just rough, wild and enjoyable sex. Whereas Atwood's image of porn is inhumane to ones self being. No human being should have to be subjected to such means of abuse.
I believe that pornography in public should be banned. This includes stores that sell pornographic material. Instead, these magazines and other pornographic materials should be kept separately in a private room, where you must be an adult to enter and purchase such material. Pornographic material that is kept privately either to be sold or to be viewed or used in the privacy of one's own home, should not be banned. I see absolutely no reason why a person should not be allowed to view pornographic material in the privacy of their own home. Some people may argue with me and say that my principle should be invoked by the government. They may say that pornography increases the likelihood of harm. And I do somewhat agree to an extent. I am sure that some harm has occurred because of pornography. But harm has also occurred because of alcohol, patriotism, cigarettes, and religion. These things are not banned so neither should pornography. There is even proof that cigarettes are harmful and they are still not banned. There is no proof saying that pornography causes people to do things that they normally would not do. Pornography can be erotic, which is something that is designed to produce sexual arousal unlike Atwood's style of pornography which is designed to produce pain and burden upon oneself. Someone may argue that it is wrong to produce sexual arousal. But people are given the right of freedom of expression so we should all be entitled to do so. Porn in my opinion can also be a form of art. There are many famous artists and pictures that include naked bodies that could be considered pornography. If porn is abolished, then these great artworks should be destroyed. I know there are some people who would disagree with me and believe in legal morals which states that individual liberty is justifiably limited to prevent immoral behavior. This principle seems to force morals on all of us. Every person has his or her own morals. If this principle was to be passed by legislation, the rights of the people would be taken away because of morals of others that are different from their own morals. I understand many people feel that pornography exploits women, but as long as these women are not forced into participating in the pornographic material and it is of their own free will, there is no reason to completely limit pornography like some of you would like to do. Even if pornography is limited to some degree, the material is still going to be made, whether it is made legally or illegally. If pornography is banned, an entire new market would start up and the government would not have any regulation at all. I believe that pornography is socially beneficial. It provides pleasure without producing significant harm. Porn provides sex by proxy for lonely and deprived people. I personally feel it cuts down on criminal behavior by providing a release of tensions by substitute satisfactions. Porn also gives us a way to release our sexual desires that might otherwise be harmful to others if not released. As long as I am not forced to see pornography or not warned in advance, I have no problem with people watching or taking part in something they enjoy. It is similar to individual sexual preference. I don't have a single problem with homosexual lifestyles as long as I am not forced into anything. I honestly feel that pornography will never be abolished as long as it is regulated and not forced on people. We all just need to learn to respect one another and as long as we are able to do that then there should be absolutely no problem with pornography.
