Symbols "Objects, figures, colors or even phrases that are used to represent abstract ideas or therefore concepts."

Symbolism means the practice of representing things by means of symbols or of attributing symbolic meanings or significance to objects, relationships or events.

In the story, "The Scarlet Ibis", the author uses symbolic statements or factors to represent different characteristics of different things, for example he differentiates between Doodle and the Scarlet Ibis, when, in the beginning the scarlet ibis lay under the tree dead, the red signifying the blood, and then in the end how Doodle dies and he is covered in red, the red signifying the blood, like the Scarlet Ibis.

We use symbols in everyday of our life. For example I use lines at the top of the page to differentiate between the date, month, and year, the symbol being / .

The cross in Christianity symbolizes how Jesus was hung on two wooden planks, one which stood vertically, and the other going across it, horizontally. We also use symbols in mathematics, which most probably be one of the most heavily packed subject with symbols. Obviously, the main four symbols are, + (addition), - (subtraction), ÷ (division), and x

(multiplication).

In driving, we have to go by symbols. No one will tell us what to do but obviously, signs are there to help us by telling us what to do next and how to do it to reach our destination. In fact we use symbols so much in driving, that one can not pass a drivers license by learning on-road symbols, and therefore one does not have the permit to drive until he/she learns the symbols. In this case of driving, our life depends on symbols, that is why one has to thoroughly study them, failure to do so, could (and has) cause (d) death. Symbolism is used in other topics as well, for example, one good topic which has the use of the word symbolism is Sociology.

In sociology there is a term called "symbolic interactionism". Symbolic Interactionism is essentially a theory of socialisation. Becoming a human is not just a matter of being born. It's all about becoming a social being, which happens through interactions between the child and those around him. For example;

A child from a wealthy background, who does not, get enough attention from his parents, can seek attention through many things, one key factor being crying. A child can cry all day locked up in his room, weeping for hours but trying to hide himself from people around him, trying to stay unnoticed, which symbolizes that the child is in deep pain either emotionally or physically.

Then you have another child, who has been rejected by his parents, from a proposal to go to his friend's house. The child does not know what to do, and is desperate to go, has many options but chooses the easiest one; whining. The child keeps on asking the parent but the answer remains negative. Now the child will try to test his parent's patience and might start to cry.

Eventually the parent will get fed up with the child crying, and therefore not want to see him in pain, so he will reconsider the proposal, and give the child a positive answer, he will let him go. Now the child has learnt where and what his parent's weak point is and he will keep using the same strategy to get somewhere. This is a symbolic action, now the child knows that by crying he symbolizes to the parent, some emotional pain, and crying would just be another way of asking his parent, in an abstract way, that, yes, you should allow me to go.

Symbolism Emphasizes motives and meaning for individuals and groups, it focuses on the importance of symbols for people and maybe even animals, mostly in every day thinking, feeling, talking, writing, seeing, hearing, as the core elements of all human interactions.

Does the movie "American Beauty" totally destroy the idea of what American gender roles are? Let me start off by stating what I feel the gender roles are in America. The male gender seems to take care of the money that is brought into the home. He is strong natured, and never shows emotion. The male seems to talk down to his children, in ways to make them better people, again going back to not showing emotion. The female is, for the most part a housewife that takes care of the children. She works but makes less than the male. Women tell children what they want to hear to make them feel good about themselves. So how can characters in a movie that is often compared to the American dream itself destroy the idea of gender roles? The character Lester in this family does not follow the male gender role. In fact it's the opposite; he follows the female gender role. Lester does not have the respect you would expect a father to have from his family. An example of this is when the family eats dinner; none of the other family members even ask he how his day was or even listen to him. "Can you pass the asparagus?" I feel this is due to the fact that Lester doesn't have an important job; he works at a desk talking on a phone similar to a secretary, which is stereotypically a woman's job. Lester also is the parent that reaches out to his daughter Jane. He tells her things that make her feel good as a person. Lester is not your idea of the typical American family man. He gets no respect from his family, works at a simple job, and is the only one who reaches out to Jane. That will all change soon enough though. Similar to Lester, his wife Carolyn follows the opposite gender role. In the film, she fills the gender role of a male. Carolyn wears the pants in this family. The whole event of dinner revolves around her. They listen to her music; eat what she makes, and talk about her day at work. Carolyn is also an independent worker; she runs her company by herself with no help from anyone. She even hates herself for showing an emotion linked to weakness, when she cries over not selling a house. She even carries and enjoys shooting a gun, a male stereotype of the lust for power. Carolyn treats Jane similar to how a father would treat his child. She talks down to Jane while at the same time trying to help her out "Are you trying to look unattractive?" Carolyn is the embodiment of the male gender role. She wears the pants in the family, is independent, is afraid to show emotions, and talks down to her daughter. Carolyn is the model for the gender role of an American man. So is anyone in this movie in tune with his or her gender role? Ricky is a character that seems to be the closest. He is in touch with both the male and female gender roles found in American society. Ricky's softer female side appears when he is behind his camera. But even behind the camera he is, as Jane puts it, "confident" which relates to the male gender role. Ricky also shows strong leadership qualities at the end of the movie when he leaves home to go to New York with Jane. Ricky shows both a male and female side throughout the movie. He better watch out or someone might think he's gay.

College papers on American Beauty

Does the movie "American Beauty" totally destroy the idea of what American gender roles are? The answer to that question lies in what you think the gender roles are. Every character in this film could be picked apart, and used to prove a certain point of view. The only character I felt doesn't deviate from her a gender role is Ricky's mother. But by following that role she became an empty shell of a woman. People must be free to do what they think is right, not what society tells them is right. To truly enjoy life people must ride it on their own made path with all its ups and downs, like a white plastic bag dancing with the wind.

Character is the combination of qualities or features that distinguishes one person, group or a thing from another. It is the description of persons attributes,traits or abilities.character of a person is adjuged only by observing keenly his intentions,inner feelings.Character is defined only to a particular person but society comprises of many people with diverse characterstics.Like every person has unique feature simillarly is the character exhibited by him.Hero is also a part of society and he might be admired not for good conduct rather than for different reasons. He might not always be lionized for his moral conduct or good deeds. Hence it is inappropriate to say that character of a hero resembles character of the whole society.Hero in a society is said to be a person noted for special achievements in a particular field, person noted for feats of courage or for nobility especilally one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life for others sake .He might be idolized for his legendary performances in his field but need not be a good charactered, disciplined in his personal life.He might be illcharactered, false behaved in public but might excel in his profession.The best example to justify that character of an individual should not be considered as character of society is the role of former United States president Bill Clinton .He was very good in handling internal and external affairs of the nation.It was his ability as a leader that he was elected twice fot the persidency.However regarding to his personal life or his charcter, he had an illicit and illegal relation with one of his coworkers working along with him.If his character is taken as the attitude of the society, then all the officials are to be accused of having illegal relations with thier staff.Simillarly many Roman emperors eventough were good at managing their kingdom, admistrating laws and strived for benefit of their citizens, their personal character was abnormal.They used to be very extravagent, irresponsible and unlawful towards their families.However, the character of great people can influence others. Mother Teresa, who was very noble,kind hearted and very soft in her attitude was able to influence the society her her decent and good deeds.The influence was upto an extent that many others tried to follow her footsteps.

Thus in most cases, character of society cannot be judged be character of a particular person.It is our duty to get inspired by their good deeds and not to point out their defects or flaws.Like a swan takes only milk from a mixture of water and milk, we also should consider the good deeds done by the celebrities. Order your Socrates and Crito paper at affordable prices!The dialogue Crito, by Plato, describes one of Socrates' devoted friends and believer of his teachings that presents a coerce and powerful argument and debate whether or not Socrates should escape prison, and save his life. Although Crito's argument doesn't convince Socrates that he should escape from prison, Socrates concludes and considers this action to be unjust. Like a true man, Socrates accepts his execution, which is very rare that anyone would do this. Escaping from prison would be against the law and would make him an enemy of the state.Crito's opinion is that it would not be wrong for him to escape because he has not been imprisoned justly. Socrates fully believes that one should obey and follow a state's imposition upon him/her, even though that which is being imposed may be unjust. Crito points out that if Socrates doesn't follow the plan, many people would assume that his friends didn't care about him, and didn't bother helping him escape. Socrates answers back and remarks "....majority could inflict the greatest evils, for they would then be capable of the greatest good, and that would be fine, but now they can't do either. They cannot make a man either wise or foolish....."-Socrates (pg.45) He is trying to say that it doesn't matter what one says about someone else. Crito argues that if Socrates doesn't escape he will be abandoning the children that can be taught by him."....I think you are betraying your sons by going away and leaving them when you can bring them up and educate them. You thus show no concern for what their fate may be....You seem to choose the easiest path whereas one should choose the path a good and courageous man would choose...."-Crito (pg.45-46) Socrates states that he shouldn't think of his children first, but of the truth and morality of the state in which his children will live and grow. He wants to show his children good examples and virtue by doing just actions. What kind of father would he be if he taught his children a life of a fugitive? If he escapes he will live the life of a fugitive, a hypocrite, an enemy of the state and he will lose a lot of that morality and his children will be looked down upon. His children won't receive the same kind of justice they would've gotten if he had not escaped.Socrates persists and stresses the point that no one when wronged, inflict wrong in return. He ends up telling Crito that if he runs away, he will be doing crime and would engage a wrongly act to the law. Crito ends up, respectfully agreeing that one shouldn't do wrong acts, and agrees with Socrates. I agree with Socrates' point of view for the mere fact that Socrates is known for a man of his words. He was certainly not weak minded. Why would anyone want to live a life of shame and resentment and at the same time being looked at with eyes of hipocracy. If the law approves of death penalty and execution towards the criminal or the accused one, one must obey it even though one's actions was not unjust. Sooner or later, the law will notice that they made a mistake, and only God, the gods, and oneself would truly know that the action wasn't unjust, which is more important. Obeying the law, is like obeying your parents.

All in all, Socrates' philosophy and important factor is a s follows Justice and Truth go hand-in-hand. Without truth, justice cannot be prevailed with the wrongdoing in life. He always believed that it's always wrong to break an agreement, and continuing to live his life normally without any regret, and being dishonest towards the state. His ideal of staying in prison may have cost him his whole 70 years of life, but saved the right and truth of the state. It's better to die with moral values than to live with shame. A true man actually died for these laws. Please note that this sample paper on Socrates and Crito is for your review only. they simply believe it's just a blob of tissue. People must no longer ignore thescientific evidence that life begins at the moment of conception, and start hearingthe silent screams of unborn children. The argument by the pro-abortion side is that the unborn child is not truly achild. Many people who are pro-abortion justify their beliefs through the conceptthat a fetus is only a blob of tissue until it is born, or the statement life begins atbirth. Abortion is not as simple as removing a blob of tissue; Abortion is thedestruction, dismembering and killing of a human life--an unborn baby. "It isscientific and medical fact based on experimental evidence, that a fetus is aliving, growing, thriving human being, directing his or her own development"(FetalDevelopment). The word fetus is Latin for "offspring or young one," and the lifeof a human begins at fertilization, so writing it off as just a blob of tissue is morallywrong. At a US Senate Judiciary Subcommittee meeting, most scientists saidthat life begins at conception or implantation of the embryo. For example, Professor Hymie Gordon of the Mayo clinic stated, "...by all criteria of modernbiology, life is present from the moment of conception"(Fetal Development). In a16 Planned Parenthood pamphlet entitled 'Plan Your Children' it states, "anabortion kills the life of a baby after it has begun, and is dangerous to your lifeand health as well"(Defining Abortion). Even though abortion is dangerous to awoman's health, and kills her baby, Planned Parenthood still offers it as a safesolution. This statement contradicts what most abortion clinics say. It is notpossible for abortion to be offered to women as a safe solution, when it not onlyputs her life in danger, but also kills another human being. Science has proven that a fetus is truly a human, as well as that life beginsat conception. The moment of conception for a fetus is, "Life in a continuum. From the moment the egg is fertilized a new life has begun. All the geneticinformation is present to construct a unique individual. Gender, physical features,eye color have already been determined. The baby's heart begins beatingregularly at 4 days. Babies in the womb hiccup, cry, play, and learn"(FetalDevelopment). Life continues from the day of fertilization until death. Nothing isadded to a person during a lifetime. Life in the womb does not change at birth,there are no special procedures or changes that occur during birth to magicallychange the fetus to a baby. It is already a baby-- a human life. "If a fertilized eggis not by itself a full human being it could not become one because nothing isadded to it," said Dr. Jerome Lejeune(Defining Abortion). Most of all thedevelopment also takes place before one is born. Of the forty-five generations ofcell divisions before adulthood, forty-one have taken place before a person isborn(Defining Abortion). Therefore, fertilization is just the beginning of a longprocess of growing and maturing. In addition, a baby is truly a human being at conception and aborting thatchild becomes legal murder that people commit everyday around the world. Whywould you want to take the precious life away which is a gift from God? Americaneeds to open her hears to the screams of millions of murdered babies eachyear.
