Does the movie "American Beauty" totally destroy the idea of what American gender roles are? Let me start off by stating what I feel the gender roles are in America. The male gender seems to take care of the money that is brought into the home. He is strong natured, and never shows emotion. The male seems to talk down to his children, in ways to make them better people, again going back to not showing emotion. The female is, for the most part a housewife that takes care of the children. She works but makes less than the male. Women tell children what they want to hear to make them feel good about themselves. So how can characters in a movie that is often compared to the American dream itself destroy the idea of gender roles? The character Lester in this family does not follow the male gender role. In fact it's the opposite; he follows the female gender role. Lester does not have the respect you would expect a father to have from his family. An example of this is when the family eats dinner; none of the other family members even ask he how his day was or even listen to him. "Can you pass the asparagus?" I feel this is due to the fact that Lester doesn't have an important job; he works at a desk talking on a phone similar to a secretary, which is stereotypically a woman's job. Lester also is the parent that reaches out to his daughter Jane. He tells her things that make her feel good as a person. Lester is not your idea of the typical American family man. He gets no respect from his family, works at a simple job, and is the only one who reaches out to Jane. That will all change soon enough though. Similar to Lester, his wife Carolyn follows the opposite gender role. In the film, she fills the gender role of a male. Carolyn wears the pants in this family. The whole event of dinner revolves around her. They listen to her music; eat what she makes, and talk about her day at work. Carolyn is also an independent worker; she runs her company by herself with no help from anyone. She even hates herself for showing an emotion linked to weakness, when she cries over not selling a house. She even carries and enjoys shooting a gun, a male stereotype of the lust for power. Carolyn treats Jane similar to how a father would treat his child. She talks down to Jane while at the same time trying to help her out "Are you trying to look unattractive?" Carolyn is the embodiment of the male gender role. She wears the pants in the family, is independent, is afraid to show emotions, and talks down to her daughter. Carolyn is the model for the gender role of an American man. So is anyone in this movie in tune with his or her gender role? Ricky is a character that seems to be the closest. He is in touch with both the male and female gender roles found in American society. Ricky's softer female side appears when he is behind his camera. But even behind the camera he is, as Jane puts it, "confident" which relates to the male gender role. Ricky also shows strong leadership qualities at the end of the movie when he leaves home to go to New York with Jane. Ricky shows both a male and female side throughout the movie. He better watch out or someone might think he's gay.

Does the movie "American Beauty" totally destroy the idea of what American gender roles are? The answer to that question lies in what you think the gender roles are. Every character in this film could be picked apart, and used to prove a certain point of view. The only character I felt doesn't deviate from her a gender role is Ricky's mother. But by following that role she became an empty shell of a woman. People must be free to do what they think is right, not what society tells them is right. To truly enjoy life people must ride it on their own made path with all its ups and downs, like a white plastic bag dancing with the wind.
