Metaphor, as a subject of research, has enjoyed great popularity among philosophers, stylists and linguists in ancient times as well as in modern days. Different approaches have been taken to explore into the nature of metaphor and accordingly varying results emerge through researchers¡¯ constant efforts. This paper, though of little length, is a venture to take a snapshot at the developments of metaphor studyStudy of metaphor in view of rhetoric continued its way through the long history, and today it is still a puzzling subject in modern rhetoric and stylistics. In addition, this approach, given its deep-rooted influence over the past two thousand years or more, may be the most popular among non-researchers since metaphor, as it were, has been traditionally viewed as a figure of speech involving a meaning transference from a word¡¯s literal meaning in rhetorical theory, and so is defined in most dictionaries. This model, however, is out of vogue among today¡¯s linguists and other researchers as well. More and more effort is spared to examine the role played by metaphor from different perspectives such as linguistics, psychology, philosophy and other disciplines.Study of metaphor in the view of poetry Poetry has always occupied a great position in every culture, and metaphor is considered as the most important element in poetic production and is said to have reached its most sophisticated forms in literary or poetic language. What Aristotle was talking about in his Poetics about metaphor actually refers to the role of metaphor in written language, including poetry, but that does not belong to what we call poetic perspective here.

Since cognitive semantics is one of the most influential branch of linguistics nowadays, and metaphor always involves meaning, it is justifiable that we take a close look at the cognitive view on metaphor here. Contrary to the traditional or rhetorical view, metaphor is no longer understood as a speaker or writer¡¯s violation of norms in language. Rather, the cognitive paradigm sees metaphor as a means whereby more abstract and intangible areas of experience can be conceptualized in terms of familiar and concrete. Metaphor is thus motivated by a search for understanding. It is characterized, not by a violation of selection restrictions or norms, but by the conceptualization of one cognitive domain.Although metaphor has been an interesting subject in semantics rather than syntax, Halliday has successfully brought these two together and owing the influence of his theory his point of metaphor has drawn considerable attention from other researchers. Metaphor, as is described in the rhetorical sense, is traditionally viewed as a deviant use of words, but Halliday sees metaphor from a contrasting angle, viewing metaphor as variation in the expression of meanings. Contrary to the traditional limitation of metaphor to lexical restriction (or selections), it is now incorporated into a larger concept of lexicogrammatical selection, or 'wording'; and the metaphorical variation is lexicogrammatical rather than simply lexical. Halliday maintains that grammatical variation accompanies lexical variation. He thus introduces to us a concept --- grammatical metaphor. While there is not yet a recognized definition of grammatical metaphor, Hu Zhuanglin holds that at least one of the two concepts of metaphor, namely, tenor and vehicle, or target and source, is related to grammar. We have up till now profiled metaphor through its developmental stages, so it is now of necessity to lay bare the relationships among and our evaluation of these varying approaches. The traditional view of metaphor as a figure of speech is actually suggesting the relationship between norm and deviation. Metaphor deviates from normal language and attains its intended effects. M.A.K Halliday indeed carries on this tradition in his description of grammatical metaphor. He regards the transference of metafunctions as well as other semantic functions at subordinate levels as metaphorical. This is in fact echoing the deviation from norm by metaphor. The greatest contribution Halliday has made in his account of metaphor, as I see it, is his success in pushing metaphor onto the stage of grammar, thus freeing metaphor from its purely semantic prison house.Alternatively the poetic and cognitive models take a different stance in tackling this question. The pervasiveness of metaphor seems to argue against the deviance hypothesis, for metaphor will eventually destroy the norm against which deviance is to be recognized as such. Halliday himself also admits that the congruent realization is no better or worse than the incongruent form and metaphorical realizations in many instances have become part of the norm, i.e. metaphor ceases to be metaphorical. Therefore there seems no need to argue too much whether metaphor is a deviation from the norm in language. This paper is an attempt to offer a general picture of the study of metaphor and four perspectives, i.e. rhetorical, poetic, cognitive and grammatical, are investigated to provide a glimpse of metaphor research over history.Metaphor has remained an intriguing subject even though research into this phenomenon, be it linguistic or of thinking, has continued ever since Aristotle¡¯s period and still deserves attentions from researchers in the days to come.ReferencesHalliday, M.A.K. Louis Riel one of the most controversial figures in Canadian history. Louis Riel was born in 1844 at St. Boniface. Throughout his childhood he learned to speak both French and English, and he studied to become a priest. However, he did not complete these studies, and moved to the U.S. to become a store clerk. But by 1868 he grew homesick and decided to move back to his Mtis homeland. It was in this year that he first set the stage for many historic events to follow. Many people think Louis Riel was a hero, and many believe that he was a villain. In this essay I will discuss the matter, and all of the reasons that cause people to take up either point of view. Personally, I believe that Louis Riel was a hero, even though he did do some bad things. No one can be perfect, and what he did may have turned out for the better.Louis Riel entered Canadian history in 1868, as an unofficial but greatly appreciated leader of the Mtis people. Canadian surveyors were beginning to make their way into the west, to survey and divide the land for settlers from Ontario and Quebec. But the Mtis people wanted to keep their traditional ways, and did not want to be forced to move. At the time, Louis Riel had just returned from the U.S., becoming homesick after two years away from his family. When the surveyors came to the Mtis lands, Louis Riel stepped on their chain and said to them "You go no further." It was this that began to lead him to rebellion against the Canadian Government, and to try and protect the rights of the Mtis people. One of the first things he did was set up the National Committee of the Mtis. This committee was to decide how to protect the Mtis' rights and way of life. At first, Louis Riel had no thoughts of an armed rebellion, but committee was to decide how to protect the Mtis' rights and way of life. Even though he may have executed Thomas Scott and led the Northwest rebellion, he was honest and loyal to his people, and he only did what he thought was right. If the Canadian government had cooperated in the first place, none of this would have happened, and Louis Riel would have never been recognize as a Mtis leader. Charlotte and Saint Louis are expected to accept. If they do, the league would include 14 teams.

Atlantic 10 commissioner Linda Bruno said she wouldnt divulge the entrance fee.

We issued the invitatioins with the understanding that theyre going to accept them and theyll be part of the decision of divisions and how the league will be made up, Bruno said.

Bruno said she wasnt worried about managing a conference of 14 schools.

We did it with 1 and we can do it at 14, Bruno said. The old double round-robin days are long gone. We do need to protect rivalries for television purposes.

Bruno said the Atlantic 10 wasnt just throwing a life line to Charlotte and Saint Louis after the Conference USA shakeup.

We looked at who was the best teams available and we feel these two teams will make us better in basketball, Bruno said.

Bruno said the A-10 wont change its name, even though it will have 14 teams.

We havent been 10 in so long so why revise history, Bruno said.

The A-10 had also been considering extending an invitation to Boston University of the America East.

If they had remained in Conference USA, Charlotte and Saint Louis would be the only non-football schools in the new-look conference in 005-06.

If they had remained in Conference USA, Charlotte and Saint Louis would be the only non-football schools in the new-look conference in 005-06.

Conference USA lost all-sports members Cincinnati, Louisville and South Florida and non-football members Marquette and DePaul to the Big East earlier this week for the 005-06 season. Conference USA added SMU (WAC), Tulsa (WAC), Rice (WAC) , Marshall (MAC) and Central Florida (MAC/Atlantic Sun) for 05-06.

The Conference USA holdovers are all-sports members East Carolina, Houston, Memphis, Southern Miss, Tulane, UAB and TCU, assuming the Horned Frogs do not bolt for the Mountain West, yet it is highly likely that the eight-member Mountain West intends to invite TCU. If that were to happen, then Conference USA would look to Louisiana Tech out of the WAC as TCUs replacement.

Conference USA has been very good to us, Charlotte mens basketball coach Bobby Lutz said, but the new Conference USA would be a tough sell for Charlotte and Saint Louis. Lutz said the Atlantic 10 is the best conference in the nation sans major college football teams.

Conference USA commissioner Britton Banowsky said Wednesday that he welcomed Charlotte and Saint Louis to remain in the league but did say an all-sports conference was preferable.

The exit fee for teams leaving Conference USA has been altered. No longer are the schools fully responsible for the decrease in a television contract. The original exit penalties included a clause that teams leaving would be responsible for the difference in dollars of a negotiated television contract. Conference USAs television contract will drop considerably, to the tens of millions of dollars, once the teams leave for the Big East. ESPN has the right to re-negotiate with a conference once its league membership changes. Instead, the departed schools must agree to schedule the remaining teams.

Charlotte and Saint Louis have been traditionally strong competitors in Conference USA; neither team has been an easy out on the road against the top teams. Charlotte last qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 00, while the Billikens qualified in 000, 18, 5 and 4 under two different coaches. Charlotte has been more of a regular recently, reaching the tournament eight times under three different coaches since 188.

The Atlantic 10 would likely remain a 14-team, two-division conference, although teams could be moved to accommodate the additions of Charlotte and Saint Louis. The current format Saint Josephs, Temple, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Fordham and St. Bonaventure in the East; Xavier, Dayton, LaSalle, Richmond, George Washington and Duquesne in the West.

Once the A-10 makes its moves, the next dominoes to fall will be TCU (to the Mountain West or C-USA); Louisiana Tech (C-USA or WAC); Boise State (MWC or WAC); North Texas (Sun Belt or WAC); and Idaho (Sun Belt/Big West or WAC).

The departure of Boston College from the Big East to the ACC remains an issue.

BC wants to be on board for the 004-05 season with Virginia Tech and Miami, but the Big East is demanding that BC honor a 7-month, $5 million exit fee agreement from the summer. Virginia Tech and Miami only had to give one years notice and pay $1 million to leave. BC has said it is willing to pay the higher fee but is trying to negotiate the lower payment of $1 million. If they fail, the Eagles might have to remain in the conference for two more seasons.

A person could make a dramatic change of character when they go from a heart of good to a heart of evil. Macbeth is motivated to kill Duncan by Lady Macbeth, but Macbeth is then motivated by fate, and finally motivated by impulse to carry out his next succession of crimes. Macbeth had a hand, or was involved in three murders in the story. The first murder was of King Duncan at the beginning of the story with the aid and instructions of Lady Macbeth. The second murder was of Macbeth's best friend Banquo, which Macbeth used the service of three murders to accomplish. It was fate for Macbeth to eliminate Banquo because Banquo was to be the father of kings while Macbeth would not. Finally, the third murder was of Macduff's wife and children. One murderer does the job this time and Macbeth decides from this murder on to act on impulse and not think or feel remorse for any action he does from there on. All these murders indicate that Macbeth doesn't know how to make things right after he has done something wrong, so he does the only thing he thinks is right, and that is to be more violent with each act he commits. When Macbeth is first introduced, the first impression that we have of him is that he was an incredible and worthy fighter and the King speaks very highly of him. An example of this is O valiant cousin, worthy gentleman! The phrase shows that Duncan is very proud of Macbeth, his soldier, and his cousin. In the witches prophecies, Macbeth was told he would be Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor and then eventually become King. He was already Thane of Glamis and he becomes Thane of Cawdor shortly after the execution of the previous Thane, but one prophecy sticks in his mind. He is to become King. Macbeth had the thoughts of becoming King but there was no way he would ever think of murdering his King. He had neither the heart nor determination to do such a violent act. He expresses his discomfort with this in a soliloquy. That tears shall down the wind. I have no spur to prick the sides of my intent, but only vaulting ambition, which o'erleaps itself, and falls on the other. Macbeth mentions he has no motive to do the deed. However, his wife and closet companion Lady Macbeth, seemed very interested in having her husband become king. She made it known to Macbeth that the only way he would become king is to murder Duncan. Macbeth talks about how he does not want to murder his King but Lady Macbeth starts to taunt Macbeth and accuse him of being a coward and not loving her. She finally mentions that murdering the king would be a noble achievement and not a savage crime. Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth the perfect plan of making the guards drunk and using them to cover up Macbeth's dirty work. With Lady Macbeth's support and instructions, Macbeth carries out his first murder. With Duncan's death, and Malcolm leaving for England, the throne was now empty for Macbeth. Even though Macbeth has become king, he is not as happy or content, as he would like to be. He has become more fearful of the people around him and he remembers the witches prophecy to Banquo. The prophecy that he is not to be king but he will be the father of kings. Macbeth starts to think that Banquo has become suspicious of all the events leading up to Macbeth's crowning. He decides that Banquo has to be put out of the picture. He feels the crown has brought him nothing so far in the quote Upon my head they plac'd a fruitless crown, and put a barren sceptre in my gripe. Thence to be wrench'd with an unlineal hand. Macbeth decides that it is fate for him to kill Banquo for Macbeth will not have any sons of his own to become kings. Macbeth is so determined to kill Banquo that he does not tell Lady Macbeth of his plan until long after the deed is done. The murderers kill Banquo, and fate according to Macbeth has shown him the way.Macbeth has now successfully carried out two murders but the other lords have now begun to figure out that Macbeth was responsible for the murders of Duncan and Banquo. At this point, Macbeth has become so filled with evil thoughts that he realizes that the only way he can cover up his evil intentions is to be more evil in heart and in mind and not look back anymore at what he has done in the past. Strange things I have in head, that will to hand, which must be acted, ere they may be scann'd. In that quote, Macbeth decides that he must act on impulse and not think or feel remorse anymore. His first act he wishes to commit is to murder Macduff 's wife, and children. He sends a murderer out to accomplish the task and the deed is done. Little does Macbeth know that his latest plan will also lead to his eventual downfall, but now Macbeth has completely lost his mind and has made the complete change from good to evil.

Online writing services offer help on From Good to Evil in Macbeth

Throughout the story, Macbeth shows how a person can change from a heart of good to evil depending on the circumstances that they have to deal with. Macbeth was first dependent upon other people to tell him what to do and then, relying on fate as a guide, and then just acting on impulse. Macbeth successfully murdered Duncan, then Banquo, and finally Macduff's family. He eventually became so evil and so disfunctional that he could not even think rationally for himself. He indeed tried very hardly to make two wrongs make a right. Macbeth teaches us that when someone does something wrong, the best thing one could do is admit to those mistakes and make sure that nothing worse happens from them. It's never good to cover up a mistake by making a bigger one. Please note that this sample paper on From Good to Evil in Macbeth is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes.
