The book A Thousand Acres, by Jane Smiley, is characterized by Ginny's growing conflict with her father, Larry. Their conflict comes from the characters' needs for control. Ginny realizes that she has had no control over her life and Larry loses control of his life and tries to get it back.In Larry's ambition to buy all of the land adjacent to his farm he also acquirers a yearning to have complete ownership over everything on the farm. This, of course, includes Ginny and Rose. Larry shows his ownership of Ginny not only by committing incest, but also by controlling her life. She never leaves the farm or goes to college, and she marries a man because he is a good farmer and gets along with Larry. Ginny does not discover that this is the life her father wants and not the life she wants for herself until she has lived this life for many years. Ginny may not have known consciously that this was not the life she wanted, but she certainly was not satisfied with it. She is not as excited about farm life as her father, Ty, or Pete. When it is her chance to own the farm and experiment with new ideas, like the hogs, she is more worried than excited. Ginny does not enjoy being a farm wife but she was raised knowing that she would one day have a life just like her mothers, always serving others and never herself. She lives to make her family happy and they rarely show appreciation. Larry sees Ginny's attentiveness as a threat to his independence. It takes the chaos of the farm switching hands and an affair with Jess, who has enough distance from the farm to see what is really happening, for her to realize how much she resents that being used by her family. Ginny is not the only character whose offering is unappreciated. Larry's children cannot understand why he would give up the one thing he lives for, the farm. Larry owns one thousand acres, a large amount of farmland for one family. The work of his life has been to build an empire - complete, efficient, debt-free - and pass it on for his offspring to treasure and maintain. The farm could have continued to provide for his family for many generations. However, as soon as Larry passes the farm on to his daughters and sons-in-law they gamble it on new ideas and techniques with which Larry is not comfortable. What the younger generation sees as a way to take huge steps forward in the farming business, Larry sees as folly and waste.

When Larry gives his farm up to his children he needs to see that he still has control over his family. He tests this by taking long drives without telling anywhere where he is going and by buying furniture he does not need. What Larry finds is that he still has a large amount of control over his family's emotions. However, because of her father's age and drastic behavior, Ginny feels she must exert some authority and take his car keys. Larry sees this as the ultimate loss of control over his life. This is what pushes him off the deep end. Both Ginny and Larry give the best gifts that they can present to their family, Larry his farm and Ginny her life, only to see their gifts being abused and taken for granted. Larry decides that his family is not fit to run the farm. Ginny realizes that she must start to take her life back. However, they are both gifts that are not easily taken back. As Ginny is just beginning to realize that Larry is not the man she thought he was, Rose uncovers her the rude awakening of their father raping them as children. This shows Ginny just how much her life has been for her father. The lawsuit over the farm represents both Larry and Ginny trying to win back the control they had given up. It is where the two characters' needs come into contrast. Larry cannot have his ideal future unless Ginny continues to play the part of the submissive housewife. Ginny recognizes that the life she has been living isn't enough for her any more. In the end Ginny proves she is stronger than her father. He dies on the edge of insanity while Ginny starts a new life where she has control. Please note that this sample paper on Gifts and Curses is for your review only. Order your An explication of "an old man's winter night" paper at affordable prices with !Isolation, fear, and loneliness are the main points brought out in "An Old Man's Winter Night". The poem is about an old man. He is quite aged in years, his hearing is going, his eyesight is going, and he has little left to give in life. This poem uses imagery and personification to help picture what that time of life must feel like. The title clues us in to what is about to read.

This poem tells the story of a lonely old man. It takes place on a winter night, as seen in the title. The man is standing in a room. On the window is frost that has gathered. He stands in the room holding his lamp, but because of his age he is unable to remember his reason for coming in. In frustration he clomps out again. As the poem continues, it says, "A light he was to no one but himself"(l.15). The light spoken of refers to the old man or his inner light, so to speak. It then goes on to say in line 17, " A quiet light and then not even that". This line alludes to the fact that he has now fallen asleep. The poem then goes on to talk about the moon. It says that it is better than the sun because the old man can sleep. As he sleeps a log shifts and he stirs but does not wake. The last three lines of the poem are, "One aged man-one man-can't keep a house, /A farm, a countryside, or if he can, / It's thus he does it of a winter night."(l.6-8). These lines mean that when someone gets old they are not able to take care of all of these things by themselves. But if they do have to take care of them, they are best able to do it while they are asleep, when nothing has to be done.

Poetic devices are frequently used in, "An Old Man's Winter Night". The poem is written as a narrative and is free verse. Two poetic devices are assonance and alliteration. Assonance is used in line 5, "And eased his heavy breathing". An example of alliteration is "beating on a box"(l.14). "Beating on a box" can also be seen as an example of imagery. Those words bring a clear picture into your mind. Another example of imagery is, "Of trees and crack of branches"(1). Caesura is frequently used throughout the poem. It is used in lines , 10,1,1,16,18,1,1,,4, and 5. In line 7 it is also used twice, "A farm, a countryside, or…" Personification also appears many times. In line one it says, "All out-of-doors looked darkly in at him". Out-of-doors is being personified by being spoken of as if it could look at the old man. A final example of personification is "And having scared the cellar under him/ In clomping here, he scared it once again."(l.,10).

There are three main themes within the poem. The first one is isolation. The old man is isolated by himself. He lives alone in a farmhouse in a lonely countryside on a desolate winter evening. Here nature is used to create a feeling of isolation and despair. The second theme is loneliness. He is so worn out, he has nothing left to give, "A light he was to no one but himself."(l.15). Also loneliness can be seen from the sparseness of furniture around him, "He stood with barrels round him…"(l.8). The last theme is fear. With old age comes the fear of loneliness and death. The old man feels this as he sits alone in his house.

Although the old man lives alone he continues to keep going. As he begins to forget things he becomes frustrated. Yet he doesn't give up. Though his light shines for no one else it is enough for him.

As can be seen in this poem by Robert Frost, old age can bring on qualities such as loneliness, fear, and isolation. Not everyone is at that point in life yet. So this poem is helping to picture it and learn from it. No matter what a person's age, one's inner light can always shine and keep one from giving up.

To me, life seems like it was boring back in the 10s. Here is a quotation from early in the book. "People moved slowly then. They ambled across the square, shuffled in and out of the stores around it, took their time about everything. A day was twenty-four hours long but seemed longer. There was no hurry, for there was no where to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with…" It seems like there wasn't that much to do then. The way I see it is most people would have a job, cook, clean, take care of their family, go to school, or listen to the radio. They didn't have TVs or computers then and even though people did have phones they did not stay on them talking to their friends for hours like people in my family do. The woman back then most of the time stayed home. They would clean their house and cook meals for their family. They would also do some yard work. Most women washed clothes and took care of their children and the rest of their family like Mrs. Robinson did in the book. Even thought the book didn't talk about her that much I don't think she had a job or went shopping often. Men didn't work as hard as women but they had different jobs. They would get paid money to support their family. White men would have a job like being a lawyer, like Atticus Finch, collect trash, or they would own a small store in the town square. Black men would not have had an opportunity to be a lawyer or probably wouldn't own a store either. When the men got home they would take care of their family and listen to the radio. The children lead a simple life. White kids would go to school when they were old enough and they would help out and do chores around the house. The children would play outside with their friends and the boys would play football and the girls would play with dolls and do stuff like that. Black kids would work and help their parents and help raise the little kids. In some towns black kids might go to school but in Maycomb black kids didn't go to school.

Black's lives weren't as privileged as whites. Most of the blacks would work for the whites by working really hard in the fields or the black women would be maids for the white families. Blacks were like the untouchables of the town. They would live in a different part of town, had a different church to go to that white people would gamble at on week nights, and had a different area to sit in at the court house. Blacks were disliked by almost all whites. It was disgraceful that no one stood up for Tom Robison at the court house because he was black. Everyone thought that they were better then him because they were white and he was black. Today blacks and whites are equal, but back in the 0's it was different. People were very prejudiced back then. Education for whites wasn't that much different then it is today. You went to school from kindergarten until high school. There was only one major difference; blacks didn't go to school back then. Some of the white people taught them or they taught each other but they didn't go to school. A lot of jobs were different in the 10's then they are now. Some of the only jobs that women had then were teachers or house wives, but now women have the freedom to choose any job they want. Blacks mostly worked for whites then. Now all people can do almost whatever they want to do for a living. At the beginning I said that I thought life was really boring but I also think that life in the 10's was dreadful because of how they let Tom Robison die like that. I'm really glad that racism isn't as bad now as it was back then. Even though there is still some racism it's not nearly as bad as it was seventy years ago. The Harrapan Civilization By alan songer The Harrapan Civilization The Indus Valley, or Harrapan, civilization was discovered in 10-1 when engraved seals were discovered near present-day Sahiwal in Pakistani Punjab at a place called Harappa. Excavations at Mohenjodaro in Sind discovered the buried remains of a civilization with a pictographic script. The Harappans first settled sites along the Indus River. This civilization extended to the Yamuna along the bed of the river Ghaggar in Rajhastan, Gujrat and up to the mouths of the rivers Narbada and Tapati. The Harappan culture extended from the Indus Valley through northeastern Afghanistan, on into Turkestan. Most of the major sites of this civilization are in Pakistan. In fact it is in Pakistan that an earlier phase of it has also been unearthed. This happened between 155-57 when a Pakistani archaeologist, F.A.Khan, discovered a town of the pre-Indus period 00 to 800 BC at Kot Diji in Khairpur, Sind. Such sites were also discovered by Rafique Mughal in Bahawalpur, in the Cholistan desert, extending the area of this culture to the whole of southern Pakistan. The first appearance of this civilization was the early Harappan/Ravi Phase. This Ravi Phase, named after the nearby Ravi River, lasted from approximately 00 BC, or even 500 BC, to 800 BC. This phase is related to the Hakra Phase, identified in the Ghaggar-Hakra river valley to the west, and predates the Kot Diji Phase (800 -600 BC), named after a site in northern Sindh near Mohenjo-daro. Increasing knowledge of the Ravi and Kot Diji Phase occupations at Harappa, and of contemporary settlements throughout northwestern South Asia, permits glimpses of later Indus Civilization. Some of the most exciting discoveries in Ravi Phase levels have been of early writing. The origins of the Indus script-like signs dates from 00-800 BC. This would make the origins of writing in South Asia approximately the same time as in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. The Indus Valley civilization is traditionally broken down into three more Harrapan Phase, from 600 to 100 BC, a Harrapan transitional period, 100 to 1700 BC, and the late Harrapan period, 1700 to 100 BC. Archaeological and linguistic evidence indicates that the Dravidians were the founders of the Harappan culture. The Harappan civilization was twice the size the Old Kingdom of Egypt. They had trade relations with Mesopotamia, Iran, and the Central Asian peoples. The Mature Harappan civilization is divided into two cultures, the Sorath Harappan and the Sindhi Harappan. The Sindhi Harappan sites are sites characterized by elaborate architecture, fired brick construction, sewage systems and stamp seals. The Sorath Harappan sites lack stamp seals, ornaments and elaborate architecture. The Harappans were organized into chiefdoms, averaging between two and five acres. The Harappans were sedentary-pastoral people organized into various trades, such as, sailor-fishermen, smiths, merchants and farmers. The Harappans also possessed the social technology of writing seals. The Harappans were find engineers and craftsmen. They cultivated wheat, barley and millet. The Harappans had a highly developed grain storage system. They built large cities with complex drain systems under the streets of some of their cities. The Dravidians/Harrapans built the first major port in Lothol. Lothal was situated at the head of the Gulf of Cambay in Gujarat. Here archaeologists have found large warehouses ready to hold goods for export. Due to changes in the environment of the Indus Valley, much of the area became more arid. This led to many Harappans migrating out of the Indus Valley into India, to settle sites in Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana and other parts of western Uttar Pradesh between 1700-1000 B.C. It was in Gujarat, that the Harappans probably first came in contact with the Aryans. The Harrapan civilization fell with the arrival of the Aryan race. Bibliography

How I Can Change My Environmental Health The most effective thing I can do for my environment is recycle. Anyone is capable of recycling. There are many recycling centers across the nation where people are able to take trash to be recycled. Some places might pay you a small amount for recycling trash. Unbroken glass containers can be recycled. Clear are the most valuable and lids can go with metal. Tableware, ceramics, windows, light bulbs, and mirrors are different types of glass that can be recycled. Broken glass is hard to sort and that is why unbroken glass is preferred. The bad news is that some places only accept bottle glass and ceramics contaminate glass. Glass is color sorted for recycling. Clean dry newspapers and newspaper inserts can be recycled as well as rubber bands, plastic bags, product samples. Make sure there is no water, dirt, mold or other contamination. Pack newspapers tightly in large brown grocery sacks or tie with natural twine and keep them dry.

Empty metal cans, caps, lids, bands and foil full cans, spray cans unless instructed, such as cans with paint or hazardous waste. Metals can be recycled again and again by the metal being melted down and reconstructed to its new form. Plastic stamped with a #1 or # on the bottom can be recycled. The bad news is that some areas only accept clear plastic or certain shapes. Plastic types # through #7 are more recyclable plastics. Caps are usually a different type from the bottle. If it is unmarked then throw it away with regular trash because even a small amount of the wrong type of plastic can ruin a melt. Much plastic collected for recycling is actually land filled. Plastic bags marked # or #4 are usually from many grocery stores take bags. Usually recycling unmarked plastic bags or reuse bags can have a negative net impact. Mixed paper such as junk mail, magazines, photocopies, computer printouts, cereal/shoe boxes, stickers, napkins, tissues, waxed paper, milk cartons, carbon paper, laminated paper (fast food wraps, some food bags, drink boxes, foil), neon paper, thermal fax paper can all be recycled. Some places also take cardboard and phone books. Paper fiber can be recycled about seven times before it gets too small. Plastic window envelopes are also recyclable. Do not recycle dirty or food stained paperScrap aluminum such as lawn chairs, window frames, pots, and metal parts attracted to magnets can be recycled. There is no need to remove labels or bands from cans or bottles but, clean them to prevent odors. Do not recycle containers with traces of hazardous materials. Motor oil should never be dumped into storm drains. Automotive batteries and sealed lead/gel-cell batteries can be taken to an automotive or security dealer for recycling or to trade in. Rechargeable batteries from cordless phone, camcorders, shavers, portable appliances, and computers can be recycled. Throw alkaline and heavy duty batteries in trash unless prohibited. Nickel-Cadmium rechargeable batteries contain toxins and should be recycled properly. Laser/Ink printer cartridges are recyclable. Household toxics (paints, oils, solvents, pesticides, cleaners) should be recycled. Computers, eyeglasses, household goods can be donated to charity or given to a repair shop because they are not recyclable. Unless you buy recycled products, you are not recycling. I have as well as many others have used some product that I mentioned and I will begin my recycling today. We must all strive to share benefits and burdens resulting from the use of the environment. Furthermore, because in many cases environmental degradation is long-term and cumulative, precautionary policies guided by considerations of equity must be implemented to safeguard the rights of future generations.
