From the film we realise that change could be painful, that change may take a very long time or it may simply be just a change of a dress and that change is embraced by few with such positiveness and determination as confronted by Rita. Educating Rita uses different film techniques to shape the meaning of change, techniques such as use of music, camera work and different metaphors such as the 'barriers'. Educating Rita can be related back to the poem The Door (Miroslav Holub). As the movie commences and the camera, after some time, focuses on Rita we see that Rita is a child of the welfare state. Rita is naive, innocent and from the working class. She works as a hairdresser. Rita decides that she wanted a change in her life, that she wanted to discover herself. Rita starts going to a college and she is a fresh spring breeze for her professor (Frank Bryant) who also is facing problems. To resemble how Ritas life is, as she is walking back home the camera focuses on the background and it is grey, dull and dirty and it is saying that if she does not change her life, she has a bleak future. Rita and Frank both help each other. To Frank, Rita is more then a student she is a blossomed flower in a group of dead ones, she is unique. Frank sees his students more annoying then anything, and he is constantly encouraging them that they should be enjoying everyday life. Rita is different and that is because she is inexperienced. Frank is also uncertain about Rita wanting to change and tells Rita "I don't know that I want to teach you. What you already have is valuable." Rita does not feel comfortable at her college and believes that she is fish out of water yet she is resolute of what she wants to do. Rita has reasons for change. She says, I dont want to be myself. Rita also realises that the process of change is long and painful. In the process Rita not only gets criticised by her husband but also her husband leaves her after leaving her a choice between him and her education. Rita also loses a lot of her friends, even though this does not always occur with change, and she is left out "…I'm a freak. I can't talk to the people I live with anymore. An' I can't talk to the likes of them on Saturday, or them out there, because I can't learn the language. I'm a half-caste." Her father criticises her saying that she should get pregnant and fulfil her role as a woman. But Rita is confident because, she wanted a better way of livin her life.

Rita is very convinced about wanting to change and when asked why she replies, ... Till one day, y own up to yourself, an y say, is this it? Is this the absolute maximum I can expect from this living lark? An thats the big moment that one, thats the point when y have to decide whether its gonna be another change of dress or a change inside. Ritas main support for change is Frank. Frank encourages Rita to change, but youll have a much better understanding of something if you discover it in your own terms. This can be related back to the poem The Door by Miroslav Holub, who throughout his poem tries to persuade the listener to go and open the door and experience the change first hand.Rita realises that changing is going to take a long time and that she will be making many mistakes Its not easy, most of the time Im making mistakes. Change will take time and she realises this as she is going to go to summer school, which will last a very long time. Before she leaves for summer school Rita is scared and wants her hand to be held I wish you could come with me. When she is leaving for summer school the music, created by various string instruments, is uplifting and pompous and is making the viewer realise that she is looking for much needed hope as she is scared that she may not fit in at summer school. When Rita is at summer school the music is uplifting as it is underlining the increasing confidence of Rita. From this the viewer realises that Rita embraced change with such confidence and determination she is benefiting from it. The music is signifying that the wheels of change are in motion. The change in Rita after coming back from summer school is like the change felt by a person from winter to spring. She is full of self-confidence, happiness and pumped up to tackle any obstacle. I stood up, honest to god, I stood up! Rita got up in front of a whole lecture theatre and argued with the teacher, thus finally proving that her change was almost complete. When Rita is going back the camera focuses on the background, which is clean, serene and picturesque contrast to her early life where she was living in a dirty street. The picturesque scene signifies the change in Rita. This time when Rita is going to something new she tells Frank that If Ill end up as a white slave, Ill send you a postcard and showing the viewers how her confidence has grown, how the change has improved her and now that she is able to talk to the "likes of them Saturday". From the film Educating Rita, one learns a lot about change. We learn that change may take a long time, and it may take no time as Mahatma Ghandi says "Change can occur as quickly as you click your finger". Change, in this case, is painful and very long. Change is something that can only be done if the person "goes and opens the door" (The Door) expecting anything, from something big to something little, which will change your life. Furthermore change is a process which can only be embraced if the person is willing to. Please note that this sample paper on Educating Rita is for your review only.
