As Good As It Gets "Maybe this is as good as it gets." Melvin Udall says to waiting clients in a psychiatric office. Melvin was referring to the fact, that maybe there is no cure for a psychological disorder and who you are now, and there is nothing you can do to change. "As Good as it Gets" follows Melvin Udall an obsessive-compulsive man, a recluse and successful author. Melvin is depicted as a coarse man, he is homophobic, racist, and tends to dislike small dogs. While following Melvin you are introduced to Carol, a waitress in a downtown Manhattan restaurant. Melvin is a frequent customer who forms an attachment to Carol. Suddenly, something happens to change Melvin's life. Melvin's gay neighbor Simon is viciously beaten by a group of robbers. Melvin is then forced to take a dog into his home where until then, no one other than himself, entered. By this small act of kindness Melvin begins to explore new ways of helping others. He pays for a doctor for Carol's sick son, and then drives Simon to Baltimore to visit his parents. However, Melvin continues to demonstrate OCD behavior, albeit on a more moderate scale. By the end of the movie there is a love-connection between Melvin and Carol. Throughout the movie, Melvin Udall displays many symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Melvin wears gloves when going out, and when walking refuses to step on the cracks. In his apartment Melvin turns on his light three times and also locks his door three times. He keeps an endless supply of soap bars in this bathroom, washes his hands in scolding hot water, and then discards the soap bar after each use. His apartment is sterile and spotless. Melvin also does not like people touching him at all. He does not even touch the dog unless he has gloves on. While going out to restaurants Melvin brings his own forks and knives since he doesn't trust the silverware's cleanliness. Also, he could not wear the restaurant's jacket and tie for the required dress code, because of his fear of germs.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is an anxiety disorder characterized by obsessions or compulsions. Mevin's symptoms of hand washing, counting, and fear of contamination are listed as some of the most common symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. OCD interferes with a person's social life or relationships. Melvin displayed this attribute by living a recluse life with no close social contacts. The movie portrays an improvement of Melvin's condition when he takes his medication. Overall, the portrayal of Melvin Udall was nearly accurate. However, the false picture an audience might walk away with is that all people with OCD are rude and obnoxious like Melvin. The medication in the movie seemed to cure Melvin's bigotry along with his OCD."As Good As It Gets" portrays a good example of a man living with OCD. You are able to witness how debilitating at times, his disease has made him and his overall progress of coping with OCD. The symptoms that Melvin displays are an accurate example of OCD. However, his "Hollywood" progress seemed too quick to believe. Indeed, Melvin went from throwing his neighbor's dog down the trash chute to actually having his gay neighbor Simon and a dog move in with him. Although, this conclusion makes for a better movie, I believe that this rapid recovery process is not an accurate portrayal of OCD. Overall, this movie was as good as it gets in portraying the life of someone with OCD, and I recommend this movie for others to view.
