Three different lake samples were used. Each one consisted of a different pollution level. The three lakes were Kaw, Heyburn, and Birch. Each sample was taken and a 0.1mL drop was placed on a slide. Then a xmm cover slip was placed over the sample. The slide was placed under a microscope and was focused until any existing organisms could be seen clearly. The different genera of algae were identified and counted. The number for each genera was estimated by taking the amount found in one small section and multiplying that by the area of the entire slide. These numbers were recorded. Then by taking the total number of organisms in one genera and multiplying that by the cover strip area, and dividing by the strip area, number of strips and volume under cover slip we were able to find an estimated algae density from the sample. By taking that number and multiplying it by the sample volume and dividing by lake water filter we were able to find algal density from each lake. Using that result the pollution index could be found. The pollution index determined what organisms, if any, were pollutants of the lake. Birch was moderate which also coincided with our research. Birch had high level of Chlorella which have a very low pollution index. This species had little if any contribution to the pollution content of the lake. Yet after testing Kaw, which is supposed to have low pollution, we found it was full of pollutants. Mainly composed of Euglena and Oscillatoria, which is very similar to Heyburn Lake.


This could be due to human experimental error, which would include improper labeling or counting of algal species. Since the sample size was only a fraction of the lake size, this particular sample may not have been standard with the amount of pollution in the entire lake. Some species look very similar to one another, so determining the right one can be difficult at some times. One could try using larger samples or more accurate labeling methods.
