Socrates was put in prison for "corrupting the youth". While in prison he is visited by his friend Crito who tries to persuade Socrates into escaping his punishment of death. He gave many arguments for why he wouldn't escape from prison. His first argument was that it would be wrong for Socrates to abandon the arguments in which he believed and taught in the past simply because his life was in danger. If he were to change his beliefs at this moment it should be for reason other than his soon to come death. This argument that Socrates gave was very simple yet real. If Socrates were to escape from the prison, it would undermine some of his teachings about the laws of the state and how the citizens needed to abide by them. This would lead to people to doubt his other lessons because he wouldn't "practice what he preaches". Having gained from the laws, it would be unjust to turn one's back on the laws. That would indicate a lack of proportion, especially since Socrates has benefited so much from Athenian mores. He has rarely left the city in seventy years. Getting without giving back shows a lack of geometrical proportion -- fairness or equity. Furthermore, Socrates is not equal to the laws; they are his superiors. If he had escaped from prison then he would be guilty of corruption of the youth. Another explanation in which Crito tries to convince Socrates is that if he doesn't escape then the people would look badly upon Crito because he is supposedly a close friend to Socrates and he should've helped Socrates in escaping. Socrates replies by giving an illustration of a man doing athletics. If this man were to go into athletics and listen to the opinions, praise, and blame from the multitude instead of listening to the doctor of trainer it would lead to the deterioration of his body. This illustration is true in matters such as what is unjust and just, honorable and shameful, good and evil.

His argument in short is just saying that you shouldn't go by what other people say. Only take advice from knowledgeable people. This argument is very important. A lot of people these days only go on what the "multitudes" would like to do. His second argument leads into his third argument. Its not living which is of most importance but of living well. His second argument was focusing on listening to knowledgeable people on issues of justice and injustice. If you were to not follow the advice of the person it would lead to the disorder of the soul. That part of the person would be deteriorated by injustice. Please note that this sample paper on Socrates is for your review only.
