The settlers of the new world all came from an area which had similar traditions, lifestyles and practices. Because of this, there were many similarities between different colonies in the New World. In contrast, these settlements were often established by people of different religions and ethnicities. This resulted in slight differences in the way communities carried out their daily lives. Two settlements that are simple to compare and contrast are the Jamestown and Plymouth settlements. Traveling aboard the Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery, 104 men landed in Virginia in 1607 at a place they named Jamestown. This was the first permanent English settlement in the New World. They chose their spot in a location they thought would be secure in order to avoid the mistakes of Roanoke. Jamestown offered anchorage and a good defensive position. Warm climate and fertile soil allowed large plantations to prosper. Unfortunately, the land was also marshy, humid, and disease-prone. It was on local Indian land, belonging to the dominant chief Powhatan. The settlers that traveled from England were mostly businessmen and not laborers, and fell prey to diseases. Malaria attacked the colony, causing a labor supply because most were either too weak to work or dead. By January 1608, there were only thirty four colonists left. The leader of the colony, John Smith, was the reason Jamestown survived in the end. He organized raids on the local Indians to steal food and kidnap natives. In 1608 Puritan Separatists immigrated to Holland after being persecuted in England. However, after a number of years the Pilgrims felt that their children were being corrupted by the liberal Dutch lifestyle and were losing their English heritage. On September 160, the Puritans, known as 'pilgrims' before they left, departed with thirty five Puritan Separatists and sixty seven others aboard the Mayflower. The original destination of the Mayflower was at the mouth of the Hudson River, but on December 1,160, they established the settlement of Plymouth on Cape Cod. Plymouth was an area just north of the Cape, outside of the area of the Virginia Company. It provided good anchorage and an excellent harbor. Cold climate and thin, rocky soil limited farm size. New Englanders turned to lumbering, shipbuilding, fishing and trade. The relations between the Pilgrims and the Indians were not bad, mostly because the native population was weakened by disease. The survival and growth of the colony ultimately depended on the natives' help from Squanto and Samoset. Squanto learned English and eased the tension between the two cultures. The Pilgrims had a poor community, but stayed because they were devoted to religion and they had faith. They did not care how they were viewed by other ambitious colonies to the north.

The two colonies were settled for very different reasons. Jamestown was founded for economic motives. The Virginia Company of London, organized in 1606, sponsored the Virginia Colony. Organizers of the company wanted to expand English trade and obtain a wider market for English manufactured goods. They naturally hoped for financial profit from their investment in shares of company stock. Plymouth was formed for religious purposes. The Puritan Separatists wanted their own society in which the church could rule all aspects of their lives, without corruption from other cultures. The founders of Plymouth were dissenters from the Church of England and established the Puritan or Congregational Church. Those in Jamestown were members of the Anglican faith, the official Church of England. The government was also different in these two settlements. In 161, the first representative legislative assembly in the New World met at the Jamestown church. It was here that our American heritage of representative government was born. Since New England was outside the jurisdiction of Virginias government, the Pilgrims established a self-governing agreement of their own, the Mayflower Compact. The growth and development of these two English colonies, though geographically separated, contributed much to the present American heritage of law, religion, government, custom and language. Their similarities and differences influenced the United States and helped it to become what it is today. Please note that this sample paper on Settlers in America is for your review only. In the book Lord of the Flies, the author William Golding illustrates that evil resides in all human kind. The book Lord of the Flies was an extremely moving and brutal book. It showed the contrast of good verses evil. The plane crash that started the boys exhilarating adventure was a result of them fleeing war. In the conclusion, there ended up being war on the island. William Golding does a great job of showing the contrast between good and evil. The ancient philosopher, Socrates, argues that "If one pursues knowledge through justice and wisdom, one will eventually always chose what is right and good because there will be no other choice." This is saying that a person who has been well educated will never chose the wrong choice, because once he knows the right choice he will choose it. The idea that evil dwells inside us all simply states that under extreme conditions, similar to those on the island, this evil could be exposed. The boys on the island had plenty of chances to make the right choice. Although they were well educated and dignified, some choose for their evil to be brought out. Jack was one of the main causes for violence on the island. At the beginning of the story the main conflict was between Ralph and Jack over leadership. When Jack lost the election to become leader he had a sense of rebellion and anger towards Ralph. As the plot built up, a beast is created on the island through the boys' own imagination. William Golding created this beast to represent the beast inside of us. The Beast also represented all of the war and hate in the society. When Sam and Eric witness the sight of the beast, Jack uses it to his advantage and persuades the others to join his tribe and that he will protect them from the beast. At this point William Golding is exposing that the real beast is the dark side of human nature.

I believe, the evil inside the boys is the main conflict in this book, and causes evil to erupt on the island. As the acts of war build up, Jack and his followers become blood thirsty savages. They do not only hunt for food, but now, just to kill another living creature, and spill its blood. This is shown when he orders his hunters to kill the mother sow nursing her piglets. As an offering to the beast the boys "sharpen a stick on both ends" and mount the sows head on it as an offering to the beast. The beast represents war and violence, and the beast is the anger and hatred inside us all. William Golding is describing how on the island the same thing is happening in the real world, and that the Beast inside is what causes war. The second death on the island symbolizes the evil that idea developing in the book. At the part where Piggy is killed by Roger, Golding is illustrating violence building up on the island. The peak of the war in the book is when the savages hunt Ralph. At this point Jack and his hunters begin to kill and torture people. William Golding produces an extremely evil and war-like environment for this part of the book. This part of the book is intensely showing how the evil in human nature is brought to its fullest extent. William Golding's perspective on the human nature can not be precisely defined, because it is so complex. However, the point that came across to me personally when I read the book was, that the beast inside every single human is the cause of hate, war and murder. Events that happened in the book are exactly like ones that could happen in real life. The book symbolizes how the human nature evolved. We all started out in peace in an unknown world, with none except god by our side and, day by day, human nature separated the society to distinguish the good from the evil. Today, that contrast of good and evil is what makes the world what it is. Please note that this sample paper on The Nature of man:William Golding's perspective. is for your review only. Predicting the future is difficult. We usually rely on the past and the present to foretell the future. Looking into the past, we realize people have not only constructed magnificent civilizations, but also waged brutal wars. Nowadays, with the advent of weapons of mass destruction, we run the risk of human annihilation. Although it is our hope that the future will be a peaceful one, this remains to be seen. As the famous computer programmer Alan Kay said, the best way to predict the future is to invent it. Merely hoping for a better future will not bring us one. If we are to overcome violence and achieve a peaceful world, we ought to find out a way to invent a peaceful future. To that end, I¡¯d like to introduce you a Korean dish called Bibimbap.Bibimbap is a mixture of rice with vegetables, sliced meat, chili sauce and sesame oil. Each ingredient is cooked separately, and is mixed in a large bowl right before eating. It is popular among Koreans and non-Koreans alike. This is because each ingredient keeps its own flavor without diminishing the taste of the other ingredients. Ultimately, a perfect combination of the ingredients be tasted. By studying how such a harmony can be created with different ingredients, we can learn a vital lesson towards achieving peace peoples in our world should preserve their distinct characteristics, as they blend with each other. We have experienced much bloodshed, because most people have not tolerated the differences of other peoples.

Cheap college papers on Recipe for Peace

To do away with such an unsavory Bibimbap, we must first see that we can coexist with our so-called enemies. The world does not have to be a boxing-ring where one must defeat the other to survive, but a Bibimbap bowl where differences can coexist in harmony. Second, this view needs to be unanimous. We must have a consensus that our coexistence is vital for world peace. Third, we must promote communication with each other, to eliminate possible discords among people and reinforce lasting peace. Only then can a perfect Bibimbap can be tasted. So far, our Bibimbap has been of both good and bad quality. Korea is one example of how people dealt with different ingredients and struggled to harmonize these differences, both successfully and unsuccessfully. Korea has been divided into two parts for half a century. During fifty years of separation, people were unable to contact family members and friends across the 8th parallel, not knowing whether they were alive or not. Misconceptions and hostilities deepened all the time. Reconciliation between the Koreas seemed remote, unification impossible. The situation took a big turn following the meeting of the heads of the two countries on the 15th of June 000. The channels of communication widened, and people started to improvise a timid, yet workable rapport. People, whose minds were once veiled in hatred and distrust, started to listen to each other. Many families enjoyed short, yet hopeful reunion after almost an entire life of separation. Hope for a peaceful future suddenly flourished across the two Koreas. Still, this world is immersed in bloodshed. People are losing their homes, properties, and their lives. Lack of communication and understanding built a wall of distrust among people and blinded them of the miseries suffered by others(and probably by themselves, too), which have led to even greater conflicts. At present, Korea is again a hot spot, with her nuclear problems. Nevertheless, Koreans remember that although the two Koreas have shown strong enmity towards each other for fifty years, the tension was greatly alleviated once mutual trust and communication were established. The Germans, after all, achieved unification in this way. We can never have hope unless we can reestablish mutual trust and communication, regardless of how difficult the challenges may be. When making a bowl of Bibimbap, blending vegetables and meat slices alone will never produce a savory meal. We must add sesame oil and chili sauce to harmonize the ingredients. Sesame oil and chili sauce in a bowl of Bibimbap is mutual trust and communication in the world of Bibimbap. People can learn to accept other people¡¯s differences and live in harmony with them, only if they trust one another and openly communicate. If these three-different people, mutual trust, and communication-are prepared, we will be able to cook a perfect bowl of Bibimbap peace. R. jeNNINGS (F-1)Modern Popular MusicAssignment # 10's song recommendation __ Punctual Submission

College papers on sONG aNALYSIS

__Appropriate style avoiding colloquialism and slang__Appropriate typing, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and presentation__Cogent argument for the songs historical importance__Accurate description of the song's musical features__Total ScoreThe year was 1 and sitting in the fourth position of the Billboard Top 10 was a band by the name of Genesis. (http//www.10flashback.com/1/Music.asp, 04/06/0) Phil Collins, accompanied with his band Genesis, created a masterpiece of a song- entitled "I Can't Dance." The first time my ears gathered this song, I was only nine years old, and I thought it was powerful and moving. By moving I meant, the rhythm of the song transferred through my body, it ignited a reaction within my self to get up and dance. Out of all the songs genesis created, this one had the most influential impact on the world and upon me. Genesis has been influenced by musicians from the past and continues to influence artists of the present. In fact, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony redid one of Phil's songs entitled "Home," just a couple months ago. This is a radical alter, since Bone Thugs has a rap or hip-hop audience and Genesis started as a Progressive Rock Group. (Rock and Roll p18, James Brody Michael Campbell) Bone Thugs, categorized in a different music genre, followed this amazing predecessor because of the musical transcendences Phil's songs has upon the world. "I can't dance" reached number four in America and number and number one in the UK in 1. These facts shows Phil's dominance crossed all boarders, racial and geographic. Genesis uses musical ideas from the past and puts them together with new ideas, to create some of the best music of their century and later days. The greatest song of 1, "I Can't Dance," should go down in musical history for everyone to appreciate including my grandkids. Rolling stone writes, "Collins daringly lets down what's left of his hair on "I Can't Dance," a gritty, tongue-in-cheek anthem for the average guy." (http//www.rollingstone.com/artist/default.asp?oid=741 , 04/06/0) This beautiful summary perfectly describes the audience of the text. The theme is about a man on the beach that does not know how to dance and a woman that will not give him a chance. In reality, the average man can relate to this because most men do not know how to, or do not like to dance. The funny part about the song is, every time I hear the tune I want to jump out of my seat and go nuts. Clapping the back beat I dance and sing every word. Relating to the song, will be the biggest reasons for listeners to remember the song for years to come. Using words like "Cos" instead of "because," reminds me of African American Jazz. This technique is used to distort the spelling of words so that the pronunciation sounds stronger. The form of the song is verse refrain which derives decades before Genesis' time in musical history. Instrumentation was layered thick and the strong back beat prevailed over all other instruments. Mike Rutherford on bass guitar set the tone for the song and the tough drums by Phil were also we very effective. On keyboard Tony Banks throws in 80's-like sound effects and harmony to soften the song. The text tells a story as Phil pronounces every word he sings to the listener. The pace of the song is not like most 80's and early 0's progressive bands; it is slowed downed greatly, compared to earlier music produced by Genesis. Powerful and meaningful are the two descriptions that I would use two classify this song in the context of time. Phil Collins needs to go down in history for the impact of this song on society. Not for addressing issues like politics, but for getting people to start to dance. The reason for Genesis sitting a top the music charts in 1 was the fact that anyone can relate to "I Can't Dance". It makes me get up and jive, for others it makes them scream out that they can walk. Most importantly, "I Can't Dance" is an anthem that anyone can associate with and that is why it will go down in history as one of the best songs ever. Shirley

The university of Strathclyde

This article puts forward the leadership crisis in secondary schools. It is not only the problem of educational system but also the social problem that should be paid more attention by government and public. I agree part of opinions that the article presents and I have my own opinions as well.

I wondered what crisis in leadership of secondary schools faces and what causes this crisis when I read the title. I got the answer at the beginning of the article 'Secondary schools will face a leadership crisis within a decade as young teachers shun extra workload and responsibility, heads said this week.'

And then the article raises another reason 'Staff are increasingly opting for a life outside school and turning down promotions that could ultimately lead to headships'. In succession, the article quotes some opinions to explain the cause of crisis. It seems that lacking younger teachers or staff results in the crisis, so the problem happens on younger teachers. But I think, there is another side of the problem. That is, some unsound educational system and rules for management in education.

When people complain It seems that fewer of our younger colleagues are prepared to consider taking on management and leadership roles in schools at a time when the majority of those presently in senior leadership posts are within 10 years of retirement. I supposed why not think of other factors------ 'excessive accountability, bureaucracy and the financial side of promotion'? In my opinion, these systematic factors are the basic problems for the crisis. If these factors dont change, the crisis will exist all along.

Personally, it is a key point that how to balance the relationship between the educational rules for management and the needs of younger teachers. If this key point does work, the crisis of shortage of head teachers and senior posts in educational system will fade away

Secondaries face crisis in leadership

Secondary schools will face a leadership crisis within a decade as young teachers shun extra workload and responsibility, heads said this week.

Staff are increasingly opting for a life outside school and turning down promotions that could ultimately lead to headships, according to the Secondary Heads Association.

Anne Welsh, incoming SHA president, said The vision, dedication and integrity of our school leaders have ensured the success of much of the Governments educational agenda in recent years.

However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to appoint good heads of department and others in middle-management positions.

It seems that fewer of our younger colleagues are prepared to consider taking on management and leadership roles in schools at a time when the majority of those presently in senior leadership posts are within 10 years of retirement.

Mrs Welsh, headteacher of George Stephenson high, Killingworth, in North Tyneside, said she had advertised for a head of religious education but did not receive a single applicant.

Part of the problem was the excessive accountability that now went with school management posts. It stifled creativity and distracted school leaders from their core role.

Another factor was bureaucracy - she had to hire administrative staff to advise senior teachers on how to bid for the 5 different funding streams available to her school.

SHA also believes that the financial side of promotion is becoming irrelevant. With teachers now able to earn nearly as much as heads of department without taking on the extra responsibility, they were more concerned about quality of life.

Younger staff say quite often, We want a life, we dont want to work the kind of hours you have always worked, we want to spend our time doing other things as well, Mrs Welsh said.

John Dunford, SHA general secretary, said the shortage of applications for senior posts was particularly acute in London and the South-east where management pay would not cover the cost of mortgages.

There has to be adequate differential between classroom salaries and school leaders or there wont be any school leaders in the future, he said.
