__Appropriate style avoiding colloquialism and slang__Appropriate typing, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and presentation__Cogent argument for the songs historical importance__Accurate description of the song's musical features__Total ScoreThe year was 1 and sitting in the fourth position of the Billboard Top 10 was a band by the name of Genesis. (http//www.10flashback.com/1/Music.asp, 04/06/0) Phil Collins, accompanied with his band Genesis, created a masterpiece of a song- entitled "I Can't Dance." The first time my ears gathered this song, I was only nine years old, and I thought it was powerful and moving. By moving I meant, the rhythm of the song transferred through my body, it ignited a reaction within my self to get up and dance. Out of all the songs genesis created, this one had the most influential impact on the world and upon me. Genesis has been influenced by musicians from the past and continues to influence artists of the present. In fact, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony redid one of Phil's songs entitled "Home," just a couple months ago. This is a radical alter, since Bone Thugs has a rap or hip-hop audience and Genesis started as a Progressive Rock Group. (Rock and Roll p18, James Brody Michael Campbell) Bone Thugs, categorized in a different music genre, followed this amazing predecessor because of the musical transcendences Phil's songs has upon the world. "I can't dance" reached number four in America and number and number one in the UK in 1. These facts shows Phil's dominance crossed all boarders, racial and geographic. Genesis uses musical ideas from the past and puts them together with new ideas, to create some of the best music of their century and later days. The greatest song of 1, "I Can't Dance," should go down in musical history for everyone to appreciate including my grandkids. Rolling stone writes, "Collins daringly lets down what's left of his hair on "I Can't Dance," a gritty, tongue-in-cheek anthem for the average guy." (http//www.rollingstone.com/artist/default.asp?oid=741 , 04/06/0) This beautiful summary perfectly describes the audience of the text. The theme is about a man on the beach that does not know how to dance and a woman that will not give him a chance. In reality, the average man can relate to this because most men do not know how to, or do not like to dance. The funny part about the song is, every time I hear the tune I want to jump out of my seat and go nuts. Clapping the back beat I dance and sing every word. Relating to the song, will be the biggest reasons for listeners to remember the song for years to come. Using words like "Cos" instead of "because," reminds me of African American Jazz. This technique is used to distort the spelling of words so that the pronunciation sounds stronger. The form of the song is verse refrain which derives decades before Genesis' time in musical history. Instrumentation was layered thick and the strong back beat prevailed over all other instruments. Mike Rutherford on bass guitar set the tone for the song and the tough drums by Phil were also we very effective. On keyboard Tony Banks throws in 80's-like sound effects and harmony to soften the song. The text tells a story as Phil pronounces every word he sings to the listener. The pace of the song is not like most 80's and early 0's progressive bands; it is slowed downed greatly, compared to earlier music produced by Genesis. Powerful and meaningful are the two descriptions that I would use two classify this song in the context of time. Phil Collins needs to go down in history for the impact of this song on society. Not for addressing issues like politics, but for getting people to start to dance. The reason for Genesis sitting a top the music charts in 1 was the fact that anyone can relate to "I Can't Dance". It makes me get up and jive, for others it makes them scream out that they can walk. Most importantly, "I Can't Dance" is an anthem that anyone can associate with and that is why it will go down in history as one of the best songs ever.
