This paper talks about my current assignment at my work, which is to lead a team of 15 engineers to deliver a software product with a strict deadline of 10 months. Leading a large team with strict delivery deadlines is challenging. Issues such as making the team members align to my thoughts about how the project has to be executed, getting agreement on priorities and task allocations, etc. not only requires me to be technically strong but also requires me to have good organizational skills. The application of methods and techniques from Organizational Behavior is very helpful in such challenging management situations. The focus in this paper is on the team leading tasks involved in the initial stages of the project. The first and foremost task with my new responsibility of leading the team was to send a message to the members of the team about my general impression about the members. I wanted them to feel that I trust them to do their work and trust them to be responsible. This can be closely related to the contemporary view about employees versus the traditional theory which views employees as being lazy, and needs employees to be pushed to do their work, etc. I let each of the team members to know that they will be given adequate training, support , and encouragement and will be rewarded well for success. Developing a good project plan is a very important task. Active participation from all team members in preparing the project plan is very important. Soliciting the active participation of team members in preparing the project plan helped me to gain confidence of the team members, helped the team members to get a bigger picture of the project and also helped them to understand the phases in execution.

Identifying the training needs is an important task since strong technical skills of each of the team member is of vital importance for each team member to perform well. Another important task to increase efficiency is to identify technical skills that each of the team members possessed and to make use of these skills. Allotting the right task to each individual is of vital importance since this would save a lot of time in learning. These aspects are covered under knowledge management in organizational behavior. Knowledge Management is very important in technology companies as both proper training and proper utilization of existing skills will increase efficiency and productivity. For example, reusing an existing piece of software will not only save time in writing the software but will also decrease the chances of new bugs in the software.I also needed to establish clear guidelines to write quality software and code reviews. Code reviews involved peers reviewing each other's code. The exercise of these reviews is to give feedback to the team members on their quality of work. Enforcing discipline in terms of writing bug free, good quality software is important to the quality of the product and customer satisfaction. For example Letting the team know that delivering a piece of code without adequate testing would lead to warning the relevant team members. Team members were interested to know what norms I expected from them with respect to work timings, telecommuting, etc. I tried to set up a working relationship that will ensure a fair treatment to every one without any favoritism. For example The norm with respect to telecommuting is every team member is allowed to work from home once a week. A team member also could work from home when he or she has genuine issues such as childcare. Since software projects generally do not require people to be at the work place at all times, flexible timings with 40 hours of work per week gives a lot of flexibility to the team members to deal with personal situations such as dropping the child to school, etc. One mandatory requirement however is that I required every team member to attend weekly team meetings. The weekly team meetings are very helpful for each of the team members to know what others in the team are doing, share any issues technical or non-technical faced by the team, update project schedules and also the weekly meetings provide a platform for team members to express opinions freely.A one on one conversation with each team member helped me to understand to some extent the personality of each of the team member. Identifying and knowing about each person's personality helps to understand the behavior, what challenges each one can take in the team. For example, a couple of team members are more likely to handle stressful situations better than others. I was able to recognize weakness of one team member who had problems teaming up with others and has an arguing type of personality. The big five dimensions of personality Conscientiousness, Extraversion-Intraversion, Agreeableness, Emotional Stability, Openness to experience have been found to account for differences in the way people behave in organizations. Careful measures in early stages of the project are very important since it is relatively easy to set expectations and establish working relationships in the early stages of team formation. .
